A generated CSV can stay stale when the cache, build task, or pipeline that decides whether to regenerate it does not track a change to the code or data that determines its contents. The fix is to declare the CSV’s real inputs, make the file an explicit output, and verify that changing a relevant input makes the generator run and refresh the file.
How a changed function can leave a CSV unchanged
A saved result is reusable only when the system can tell that the conditions producing it are still the same. A CSV generator may appear to take a few arguments, yet its output can also depend on a helper function, imported configuration, source file, environment value, or upstream artifact. If the reuse mechanism does not account for a relevant dependency, it may serve an older result without warning.

This is not necessarily a CSV-format problem or a bug in the function’s visible arguments. It is often a mismatch between what actually affects the file and what the cache or pipeline believes affects it. Microsoft describes this kind of stale file-cache behavior and documents change tokens as one way to detect changes: Detect changes with change tokens in ASP.NET Core.
Make the CSV’s true inputs explicit
Start by listing everything that can change the file’s contents. Include direct function arguments, code and helpers, configuration, source data, environment-dependent values where applicable, and upstream generated artifacts. Then express those relationships in the mechanism responsible for deciding whether to reuse or rebuild the result.

- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- For a file-backed cache: tie cached content to an available change-detection mechanism for the source files or other tracked resources. Confirm what kinds of changes it observes and whether detection invalidates or reloads the cached entry.
- For a build task: declare every input that can affect the task’s output and identify the CSV as an output. Gradle warns that “Failing to specify an input that affects the task’s outputs can result in incorrect builds.” See Gradle’s guide to debugging and diagnosing Build Cache misses.
- For a data pipeline: declare stage commands, dependencies, parameters, and outputs so the pipeline can determine which work is out of date. DVC documents checking pipeline status and rerunning affected stages in Running Pipelines.
These are different layers, not interchangeable tools. Use the mechanism that owns your generated file’s lifecycle, and make sure its model matches the actual dependency chain.
Choose invalidation based on what changed
| Approach | What it tracks or provides | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| File change tokens | Connects a file-cache entry to detected source-file changes. | Which changes are observable, and whether a change automatically reloads or invalidates the entry. Microsoft’s documentation: change tokens. |
| Declared build-task inputs | Gives a build cache the inputs needed to decide whether a prior output can be reused. | Whether code, configuration, and other output-affecting inputs are included; inspect cache hits and misses when a result surprises you. Gradle’s documentation: Build Cache debugging. |
| Pipeline dependencies and outputs | Reports changed dependencies or outputs and supports rerunning affected stages. | How clearly status identifies stale work and how much downstream work must run again. DVC’s documentation: pipeline execution. |
| Test-cache controls | Shows or clears cached test-run state, including a cache-clear option for CI use. | Whether cached test state is masking a problem and whether a clean run is practical. See pytest’s cache documentation. |
| Incremental invalidation | GitLab Advanced SAST describes partial recomputation for changed files or rules, and full rebuilding for engine changes. | Whether the changed component can be recomputed selectively or requires rebuilding all cached state. See GitLab Advanced SAST. |
Pick an approach by the dependency boundary it covers, the amount of work it recomputes, and how clearly it explains why a result was reused or regenerated. A test-cache reset can help isolate a test-state issue, for example, but it does not replace declaring a missing input in the build task that creates the CSV.

Prove a relevant change regenerates the file
Use a regression check that exercises the dependency you suspect, rather than relying on a successful command or an updated timestamp alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Run the generator once and record the CSV’s contents or another stable, relevant property of its output.
- Change one input that should affect the file, such as the function implementation, a helper, configuration, or source data.
- Run the normal build or pipeline command again, and inspect its cache or stage status to see whether the expected work was invalidated.
- Check that the CSV was regenerated and that its contents reflect the change. A fresh file containing the old result still fails the check.
- Restore the changed input and confirm that the normal workflow behaves as expected in that state too.
This test design applies the diagnostic mechanisms documented by build and pipeline tools; no single cited tool prescribes a universal CSV-specific test. Gradle explains how to diagnose build-cache misses, while DVC documents status and rerun behavior for pipelines. Their status output can help distinguish a correctly reused result from a missing dependency declaration.

What to check when the CSV is still stale
- The function changed, but the task did not run: look for a missing declared input, an incomplete dependency edge, or a cache key that omits the changed code or configuration.
- The task ran, but the file did not change: check whether the modified value actually affects the generated rows, whether the generator writes to the expected path, and whether another step overwrites the result.
- The task reports a cache hit unexpectedly: inspect the inputs used for the reuse decision and compare them with the actual dependencies of the output.
- A clean run works but an incremental run fails: treat that as evidence to investigate invalidation or dependency tracking. Clearing cached state can be a diagnostic step, but the durable correction is to make the relevant dependency visible.
Gradle’s broader Dependency Caching documentation concerns dependency resolution; that cache is distinct from a task output cache. Identify which cache is involved before changing or clearing state, because clearing one layer may not address stale output produced by another.
