You can build a physical game controller around an Arduino Uno, but the board’s USB abilities decide whether a computer sees it as a gamepad. A joystick and buttons supply the inputs. They don’t make the board appear as a USB HID device. Sources reviewed here do not establish a reliable, current, end-to-end method for turning a classic Uno into a native USB gamepad, so this guide doesn’t pretend otherwise. It covers what is established: how to identify your board, what the joystick hardware does, which boards are documented as supported, and how to pick a path that works.
Step one: identify which “Uno” you have
“Arduino Uno” covers different boards, and the evidence differs for each. Check the name printed on the board before choosing software.

- Classic Uno (for example Rev3): Arduino’s Keyboard documentation lists no classic Uno among boards supporting native USB keyboard behavior. The ArduinoJoystickLibrary README says the library will not work with non-32U4-based devices such as the Arduino Uno and Mega.
- Uno R4 Minima and Uno R4 WiFi: both appear in the Keyboard documentation’s supported-board list. That covers keyboard functions. It is not proof of a ready-made gamepad workflow, and the joystick library’s README does not list them as supported.
What the Keyboard documentation actually says
Arduino’s reference states: “The keyboard functions enable 32u4 or SAMD micro based boards to send keystrokes to an attached computer through their micro’s native USB port.” That describes keystroke support on boards with native USB. It doesn’t claim that a classic Uno can present itself as a gamepad. Arduino’s Mouse documentation likewise describes native USB mouse behavior on its supported board families and doesn’t list the classic Uno. Neither page documents a gamepad.

Analog joystick
A two-axis analog joystick module with a built-in pushbutton is the usual starting point. Arduino’s Modulino Joystick page describes a dual-axis analog joystick with an integrated pushbutton for gaming. Its stated compatibility is UNO R4 WiFi or Qwiic-enabled boards, so don’t read that as a promise for every Uno. Cheaper bare modules such as the HW-504 have the same basic idea: two analog axes plus a switch, read by your code.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Core Processing with Renesas RA4M1 and ESP32-S3: The Arduino UNO R4 WiFi combines the Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller (ARM Cortex-M4) and the ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, delivering powerful dual-core processing capabilities. This combination offers flexibility for a wide range of projects, from high-speed communications and wireless control to real-time data processing and edge AI applications.
- Comprehensive Wireless Connectivity: Equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, the UNO R4 WiFi ensures robust wireless communication for IoT projects, remote sensors, smart devices, and wireless control applications. Whether connecting to the cloud, other devices, or local networks, the board offers stable and high-speed wireless connectivity for seamless operation.
- Modern USB-C, CAN, & Qwiic Connector: The USB-C port enables efficient power delivery and fast programming, improving ease of use compared to traditional USB connections. The Controller Area Network (CAN) support allows for reliable, real-time communication in industrial, automotive, or robotic systems. Additionally, the Qwiic Connector makes it easy to add I2C sensors and peripherals, simplifying the connection process and reducing the need for complex wiring.
- High-Precision 12-bit DAC & OP-AMP: For projects that require high-quality analog output, the 12-bit DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and integrated operational amplifier (OP-AMP) provide precise analog signal generation and amplification. This feature is ideal for audio projects, sensor interfacing, or applications where analog signal control and processing are necessary.
- Integrated 12x8 LED Matrix: The UNO R4 WiFi includes a built-in 12x8 LED Matrix, enabling users to display dynamic visuals, messages, or real-time data on the board itself. This makes it perfect for projects that require immediate visual feedback, such as status indicators, event displays, or interactive user interfaces.
Buttons and wiring
Extra pushbuttons or switches are reasonable additions, and jumper wires are the prototyping basics. The sources reviewed don’t specify a button count, circuit or pin map for a classic Uno gamepad, so treat any such layout as your own design. Buying a joystick doesn’t solve USB compatibility. It only gives you inputs to read.
A reference example, and its limit
Arduino Project Hub’s Arduino Leonardo Game Control Joystick lists a Leonardo, an HW-504 analog joystick module and jumper wires. It’s useful for seeing what parts a simple joystick controller needs. It is a Leonardo build, though, so it doesn’t show that a classic Uno can do the same thing.

Choosing a path
| Your board | What the sources support | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Leonardo, Micro or other ATmega32U4 board | Supported by ArduinoJoystickLibrary per its README | Use that library for joystick/gamepad behavior with the module’s axes and buttons. |
| Arduino Due | Also listed as supported by the same README | Same approach, checking the library’s current notes. |
| Uno R4 Minima / WiFi | Listed for native USB keyboard functions; gamepad support not established in these sources | Keyboard-style mapping (buttons to keys) is documented territory. A true gamepad isn’t established here. |
| Classic Uno | Not listed for native USB HID; excluded by the joystick library | No verified native-gamepad procedure. Switch to a supported board for a straightforward build. |
When you evaluate any tutorial, ask four things: which exact board it was built on, whether that board has native USB device support, whether the output is keyboard input or a true gamepad report, and what firmware steps it requires. A Leonardo tutorial won’t transfer to a classic Uno.

- Confirm your board’s exact name.
- If it’s a classic Uno and you want a plug-in USB gamepad, use a Leonardo, Micro or another supported 32u4 board for the controller, and keep the Uno for other projects.
- Wire the joystick’s two analog outputs and its switch to the board, then read them in a sketch to confirm the axes and button respond before adding any USB output.
- Add the supported library for your board and map the readings to joystick axes and buttons.
The joystick wiring and reading steps here are general guidance, not a tested build. Verify pin choices against your module’s labels and your board’s pinout.
