Amazon’s tool can show the connection from the Fire TV to the router separately from the router’s connection to the internet, which helps identify where to troubleshoot.
First check whether it is one app or the whole connection
If videos buffer in just one app while other apps play normally, focus on that app rather than assuming the Stick or home internet is too slow. Use the current instructions for the affected app or device in Amazon’s Fire TV Support.

If several apps buffer, or other devices in the home also have trouble connecting, check the network before trying app fixes. Buffering alone does not show that the Fire TV Stick is underpowered.

Use Fire TV Network Status to locate the problem
- On the Fire TV, open Settings > Network.
- Select the connected network and open Network Status or the available network diagnostics.
- Check whether the Fire TV-to-router connection or the router-to-internet connection is reported as the problem. Some compatible models also offer speed-test or Advanced views; the available options vary by device and software.
Amazon explains the separate connection checks in its Network Status tool guide. A weak device-to-router result points toward Wi-Fi coverage or placement. A problem between the router and internet points toward the modem, router, or internet service rather than the Stick’s position alone.

Restart the Fire TV and reconnect to Wi-Fi
- Unplug the Fire TV Stick from power, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- If buffering continues, open Settings > Network and turn Wi-Fi off and on, if that option is available.
- If needed, forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect by selecting it and entering the network password.
These steps refresh the device’s connection without erasing its settings or apps.
Restart the modem and router
If the router-to-internet connection is failing, or restarting the Stick did not help, restart the network equipment. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting directions recommend disconnecting both modem and router for one minute, then reconnecting the modem first and allowing it to reconnect before powering the router. Allow about a minute for each device’s lights and internet connection to return before judging the result.

Ethernet
A wired connection can be worth considering when Wi-Fi coverage is the problem and the exact Fire TV model supports Ethernet. Some Fire TV devices need an Ethernet adapter, and not every Stick supports a wired connection. Check compatibility for your model before buying an adapter.

- The Right Angle USB-C Ethernet Adapter is compatible with Fire TV Sticks with USB-C connectivity.
- As the USB-C version, this accessory is incompatible with Fire TV Sticks with micro-USB.
- Supports up to 480mbps when used with Fire TV Sticks.
Mesh Wi-Fi
For a larger home with weak coverage in the room where the Stick is used, a mesh system may extend Wi-Fi coverage. It is a coverage option, not a fix for an internet outage or a failing connection from the router to the internet.
Wi-Fi 6E
Amazon recommends Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher-capable routers for best performance with compatible Fire TV devices. That recommendation applies only when the specific Fire TV device supports the relevant Wi-Fi capability; buying a newer router by itself does not guarantee less buffering.
When to use app fixes or reset the Fire TV
For a problem limited to one app, follow that app’s current Fire TV troubleshooting steps. Amazon’s support index includes guidance for app cache, software updates, app crashes, and Prime Video, but the correct steps depend on the app and device.
Keep a factory reset as a last resort after network checks, restarts, reconnection, and relevant app troubleshooting have failed. A reset is disruptive, so use Amazon’s current instructions for your Fire TV model before proceeding.
