To make a Discord bot talk with AI, connect it to a voice channel, receive or generate audio, and route that audio through a speech-capable AI service. The work is more involved than sending a text message: Discord uses a separate voice connection and UDP media transport, and as of March 1, 2026, apps need DAVE support to participate in Discord calls. Choose an audio workflow, verify that your library supports the required Discord voice features, then test the complete path in the environment where you plan to run the bot.
What a talking Discord bot needs
A voice bot combines three systems. Each has a different job, so diagnose them separately when something fails.

- Discord connection: joins and maintains a voice session, and sends or receives audio.
- Audio processing: moves audio between Discord and the AI service, including any encoding, decoding, buffering, or turn handling your implementation requires.
- Speech AI: interprets incoming speech, generates a spoken response, or does both in a realtime session.
Discord’s developer voice documentation describes a Gateway-signaled voice connection with a separate voice WebSocket and UDP media transport. A bot therefore needs a voice-capable implementation, not just a text-command handler with a speech API added to it.

Choose how the bot will handle speech
There are two common shapes for the AI portion. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on how much control you need over transcripts, moderation, tools, and turn-taking.

OpenAI’s Realtime API documentation describes speech-to-speech interaction, while its audio documentation covers audio tasks that can form part of a staged workflow. Before choosing a service, check its current model availability, pricing, quotas, supported regions, data handling, and service limits for your intended usage. Those details can change, and no single cost or latency figure applies to every bot.
Connect the bot to Discord voice
The voice connection is negotiated through Discord’s Gateway and voice systems. A typical connection proceeds in this order:

- Request a voice-state change. Have the bot request to join the target voice channel through the Discord Gateway.
- Wait for both required events. Handle
VOICE_STATE_UPDATEandVOICE_SERVER_UPDATE. The server update supplies a session token and endpoint for the voice WebSocket. Do not treat either event alone as a complete connection. - Establish the voice transport. Connect to the voice WebSocket, negotiate the UDP connection, and select a supported transport-encryption mode. Discord’s current voice documentation specifies voice gateway version 8 for its documented opcodes.
- Keep session data current. Follow the current voice protocol for reconnects and session changes. Discord warns against caching voice-server endpoint results.
- Send audio using the voice protocol. Discord’s guide describes Opus audio carried in encrypted RTP packets and the speaking-state signaling required before transmission.
Prefer a maintained voice library that implements the connection protocol rather than reproducing the transport by hand. Check its current release documentation for the exact events, configuration, supported receive modes, and encryption features; those capabilities are library- and version-specific.
Plan for DAVE before joining calls
DAVE is Discord’s end-to-end encryption protocol for eligible calls. Discord’s September 2, 2025 announcement said that, beginning March 1, 2026, clients and apps without DAVE support would no longer be able to participate in Discord calls. That date has passed, so DAVE compatibility is a present launch requirement for a bot intended to join those calls—not a future upgrade to defer.

Discord’s DAVE protocol documentation describes group key exchange using MLS and protection of media frames with per-sender encryption keys. In practice, confirm that the specific library and runtime you deploy support DAVE for the call type your bot will join. Basic playback support, or the ability to open a voice connection, does not by itself establish that an implementation can participate in a DAVE-protected call.
Route audio between Discord and the AI
For a bot that only speaks
Generate speech with the chosen AI workflow, then pass the resulting audio through the Discord voice sender in the format and packet flow expected by your voice implementation. Coordinate the bot’s speaking state with transmission. Decide what should happen if generation fails or takes too long, rather than leaving the bot appearing to speak indefinitely.

For a bot that listens and responds
Receiving audio is a separate capability from playback. Confirm that your library can receive audio in the relevant voice channel and can do so in a DAVE-compatible call. Feed the captured audio to the chosen speech workflow, manage turn boundaries, and return the generated audio to the Discord sender. The Discord voice guide and library documentation should be checked together: protocol-level support does not guarantee that a particular library exposes every receive feature your design needs.

Define how the bot knows a turn has ended, what happens when a member speaks while the bot is responding, and whether it can be interrupted. For a staged pipeline, also decide how transcript, agent, and speech-generation state stay aligned. For a realtime session, verify that its session and turn behavior fit the conversation you intend to support. These are product and integration decisions; the API choice alone does not settle them.

Make listening, privacy, and retention clear
Tell members when the bot is listening and what audio or transcript data is sent to an external AI service. State whether audio, transcripts, or generated outputs are retained, and for how long. Limit collection to what the feature needs and provide a way to stop the bot from listening. DAVE describes encryption mechanics; it is not a complete consent, privacy, or retention policy for your bot.
Test the complete deployment, not just the API
A successful AI API call does not prove that the bot can join, receive, or play audio reliably. Test the actual deployment environment, including the network path used for UDP media.
- Join and leave the intended voice channel; test reconnects and voice-session changes.
- Verify playback, and separately verify capture if the bot listens.
- Test DAVE compatibility with the actual library version, runtime, and call type.
- Check that audio starts and stops at sensible turn boundaries, including when a user interrupts.
- Exercise failure paths such as a dropped connection, unavailable AI service, malformed or unsupported audio, and generation timeouts.
- Check firewall and hosting-network behavior for UDP media.
- Recheck current Discord library releases and AI service pricing, quotas, regions, and data-handling terms before launch.
A USB microphone is optional for local testing; it is not a Discord bot requirement. Local microphone testing can help exercise audio capture, but it does not replace testing the bot’s deployed Discord voice connection.

The central decision is not simply which AI model sounds best. Confirm the entire chain: a Discord voice implementation that can join the intended calls with DAVE support, audio receive and send capabilities appropriate to the feature, and a speech workflow whose control and turn behavior fit the experience. Then validate that chain under the network and privacy conditions of the real deployment.
