Preview the stream before making it public, and use rain audio you created or have permission to stream and archive.
What you need before you start
- A computer with OBS Studio and an internet connection. You do not need to buy a new computer or specialist streaming hardware for this setup.
- A rain recording you created or a license that covers YouTube live streaming and any replay you plan to keep public.
- A black image, a dark still image, or an OBS Color Source for the visual.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming ahead of the night you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder livestreaming instructions and getting started with live streaming for current eligibility and setup details.
Build the dark-screen rain scene in OBS
1. Prepare the visual and audio
Choose a rain file in a format OBS can play; its Media Source documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Use a plain black image or a creator-made dark still. For a completely plain black screen, add an OBS Color Source and set it to black. A dark-screen sleep stream does not require a special YouTube format.
Do not assume that a recording is safe to use just because it is available online or labeled royalty-free. Confirm that the rights cover live use on YouTube and the archived replay, if you intend to retain or publish it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Add the sources and enable looping
- In OBS, create or select a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, add the black Color Source, image, or dark still. Keep it beneath the audio source if your image source has any audio; a plain image or color source is sufficient for this workflow.
- Add the rain file as a Media Source, select the recording, and enable Loop in that source’s properties. OBS defines this option as replaying the file once playback has completed.
- Check the audio mixer while the recording plays. Set a comfortable level that avoids clipping, then listen through headphones or speakers to confirm the rain is audible and clean.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes file playback and looping. For a playlist, OBS also offers a VLC Video Source with a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed for that source to work. Use a single looping Media Source if you only have one rain recording.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
1. Create or schedule the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream. If you want to announce it in advance, schedule it using the Manage area. YouTube’s labels can change, so consult its live encoder settings guide if the interface differs.

2. Copy the stream URL and key into OBS
In Live Control Room, copy the server/stream URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen, share it publicly, or include it in a recording. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials; if one is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using it again. The YouTube live stream settings page explains the key and related settings.
3. Preview before the public broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS.
- Wait for the signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, select Go live there when the preview is ready.
- Check that the picture is black or dark, the rain is audible, and the loop restarts without a silence or unintended transition.
- For a first run, test with a private or unlisted stream before promoting a public broadcast. Continue monitoring audio and video after going live.
Do not assume that a scheduled stream is already public simply because OBS is sending a signal: check the Live Control Room status and start the event there when required. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover preview and starting the broadcast.

4. End the stream and decide what to do with the replay
End the event in Live Control Room, then stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not guarantee every archive will succeed under every condition. Check the resulting video and its audio rights before leaving the replay available; if you do not want a replay, change its visibility or remove it in YouTube Studio.
Protect the stream from copyright problems
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to proceed without interruption. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains the process, and its Terms of Service place responsibility for the necessary rights on the person providing the content.

- Keep a record of your own recording or the license and its permitted platforms, territories, duration, and archive use.
- If a licensed recording is still detected, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel; do not assume that simply disputing a match will keep a live broadcast running.
- Use only visuals and audio you are entitled to broadcast. A black screen does not remove rights obligations for the sound.
What to expect about monetization
Monetization is not automatic just because a stream is long or attracts viewers. YouTube applies its channel monetization policies to livestreams. Its update dated July 15, 2025 describes repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content, including similar videos with little variation and image slideshows with minimal narrative, commentary, or educational value. A minimally varied rain loop is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization.
If monetization matters to you, make the recording and presentation genuinely your own, add meaningful variation or context where appropriate, and review YouTube’s channel monetization policies. This is a practical precaution, not a guarantee of eligibility.

Troubleshoot common failures
Live Control Room does not show a signal
- Confirm OBS is streaming and that the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct fields.
- Check that live streaming is enabled on the channel; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- If the key was exposed or copied incorrectly, reset or recopy it in Live Control Room.
The picture is black, but the rain is silent
- Confirm the Media Source points to the intended file and that it is not muted in OBS’s audio mixer.
- Check the selected audio monitoring/output device and listen to the source locally.
- Try a supported file format such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV, then restart playback and preview again.
The audio stops after one play
- Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop.
- If you are using a VLC playlist instead, check Loop Playlist and confirm VLC is installed.
YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a copyright warning
- Stop and review the detected content. Verify that your license covers live streaming and replay use.
- Ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel if you have permission but Content ID still blocks the stream.
- Replace the recording with original or properly cleared audio if you cannot establish the necessary rights.
The stream starts but the replay is missing
Confirm the broadcast ended normally and check the channel’s videos after processing. YouTube’s automatic archiving statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise that every recording will be available. Save a separate authorized copy if you need a dependable replay.
Let the stream run from the cloud instead
If you do not want OBS and your home computer to keep running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload the rain video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. You can also build a playlist; StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo plans, then start your free first day.
