You can run a continuous YouTube stream with FFmpeg by creating a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room, copying its current RTMPS server URL and private stream key, and sending FFmpeg a video-and-audio source configured to YouTube’s ingest settings. The command is only one part of the job: for a 24/7 feed, you also need a reliable input, process supervision, and a plan for network or power failures. YouTube’s settings apply worldwide; there is no single upload-speed target that is suitable for every location in India.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, and a live stream or broadcast created in Live Control Room.
- A source FFmpeg can read, such as a local video file or a playlist. A continuous feed needs an input that can be repeated or otherwise kept available.
- An installed FFmpeg build that supports the input format and chosen output codec.
- A stable internet connection at the machine that will send the stream, plus a way to monitor and restart the FFmpeg process.
YouTube’s Live API distinguishes a stream, which defines how audio and video are sent, from a broadcast, which represents a live event. Its documentation also describes a continuous 24/7 feed alongside an additional broadcast using the same stream; completing that additional broadcast does not itself stop the continuing feed. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation for the resource model and lifecycle.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream/broadcast you intend to use.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the current server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for your stream rather than a server address or key copied from a tutorial; YouTube’s interface is the source of the current ingest configuration.
- Use the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides one. RTMPS encrypts the connection with TLS. Google’s ingestion guidance specifies the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS ingest server, and port443. See Google’s ingestion protocol guidance. - Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, put it in a public script or screenshot, or paste it into a support request without redacting it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.
Keep the full RTMPS URL intact, including its hostname and path. The URL may include a stream-key placeholder or path component depending on the interface; follow the format YouTube currently displays, and do not append the key a second time unless that format calls for it.
Choose FFmpeg settings that match YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, support RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 with AAC is a practical compatibility choice. The encoder settings page is at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 video bitrate guidance
| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not guaranteed viewer quality or an India-wide connection requirement. The same YouTube page also lists minimum values; do not mistake those minimums for its recommendations. Select the row that matches your actual resolution and frame rate, then test whether your connection can sustain the combined audio and video output. YouTube recommends measuring the connection and choosing a quality that remains reliable for it.
Keyframes, audio, and color
- Use CBR and set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth as specified by YouTube.
- YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not select HDR settings unless your source and workflow actually require HDR.
FFmpeg option names and encoder availability vary by build. The example below uses the built-in libx264 encoder and assumes a video file with audio, a 30 fps output, and a YouTube URL that accepts the shown RTMPS URL-plus-key form. Check your installed build with ffmpeg -encoders and adapt the input and output arguments to the exact configuration shown by YouTube.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "loop.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k -f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the final value with the actual RTMPS endpoint and key format provided in your Live Control Room. Keep the key private if you save this command in a script. For 1080p30 H.264, change the output scaling (if needed) and video bitrate to match the source and YouTube’s 5 Mbps recommendation; for other frame rates or resolutions, use the corresponding settings rather than blindly reusing this example.
-rereads a file at its native playback pace instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It is suitable for a file-based loop, not a guarantee that the process or network will never fail.-g 60at 30 fps requests a keyframe every two seconds; for 60 fps use a GOP of 120 frames for the same interval.- The bitrate and buffer options set a constrained, steady video rate; the example’s figures are the 720p30 recommendation converted to kilobits per second.
-f flvselects the container format used for RTMP-family streaming. Confirm the output protocol and URL form against YouTube’s current settings.
If the source has no audio stream, an audio encoder cannot produce audio from it; add an appropriate silent or audio input only if your production requires one. If the file is already at the desired size and frame rate, omit scaling rather than unnecessarily resizing it. Test the exact command with a short representative source before relying on it continuously.

Test stream health before leaving it live
- Start FFmpeg and check its output for input, encoder, and connection errors. A running process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming signal and review stream-health indicators and any messages YouTube displays.
- Play a test that includes both audio and movement comparable to the real content. This can expose silent audio, frozen frames, and bitrate or encoding problems that a static image will not reveal.
- Check the picture and sound from the viewer side as well as the encoder side. Confirm that the loop transitions acceptably and that the broadcast is in the intended live state.
- Only then leave the feed running, with a plan to notice disconnections and restart the process or repair the input.
Plan for continuous operation in India
There is no universal upload-speed figure or guaranteed ISP, power, or hosting choice for India. Measure sustained upload from the actual encoder location while it is under realistic conditions, and compare that result with the selected video bitrate plus audio and network variation. Do not choose a profile based on a brief peak speed test alone. Also check that the network allows the required connection to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint.
Choose where FFmpeg runs based on practical ownership of the whole chain, not on a presumed best option:
| Consideration | Local machine | Rented compute |
|---|---|---|
| Where the source lives | Convenient when the video files and operator are already at the same location. | Files must be uploaded or otherwise made accessible to the rented machine. |
| Who maintains the system | You maintain the computer, FFmpeg process, network, and local power arrangements. | You maintain the instance, software, process, and access; the provider’s current terms and network conditions also matter. |
| Network and power resilience | Depends on observed connectivity and power at the local site; arrange backup only if your own risks justify it. | Depends on the selected provider and region; verify current availability, network capacity, and costs rather than assuming them. |
| Monitoring and restart access | Plan remote access or an operator who can respond to a stopped process or machine. | Plan secure remote access, process supervision, and a way to detect a stopped process. |
| Total cost | Account for any incremental device, electricity, connectivity, and backup costs. | Check current compute, storage, transfer, and administration costs for the chosen setup. |
The documentation does not establish which approach is more reliable or less expensive for a particular Indian location. Compare your measured connection, where the media is stored, who can respond to failures, and the current total cost.

Keep FFmpeg recoverable, not merely running
A 24/7 setup needs supervision because the input can disappear, the network can fail, or the machine can restart. FFmpeg documents recovery-related options, but a flag or command does not promise uninterrupted operation; behavior depends on the input, installed build, and failure mode. See the FFmpeg documentation and test recovery with your actual source.
- Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Verify the restart behavior rather than assuming that an interactive terminal session will survive disconnection.
- Keep logs and check them for repeated input, encoding, or connection errors. Make sure there is a way to alert an operator when the stream stops or repeatedly reconnects.
- Test recovery deliberately: interrupt the source or network, restore it, and confirm the process reconnects or is restarted and that YouTube receives a healthy signal again.
- Store the key securely and make the restart procedure available to an authorized operator. Avoid exposing the key in public logs, screenshots, or shared scripts.
YouTube’s documentation describes continuous-feed behavior, but it does not promise that a particular FFmpeg process will stay connected forever or that a live archive will be retained indefinitely. Check current channel eligibility and YouTube’s current live-stream policies in Studio before relying on a specific broadcast workflow or archive.
Troubleshoot common connection and stream problems
FFmpeg cannot connect, or the RTMPS handshake fails
Check that the URL begins with rtmps, is the valid YouTube endpoint currently shown for the stream, and uses port 443. Google’s RTMPS ingestion troubleshooting guidance identifies a wrong port, missing SNI handling, and a mismatch between an RTMP-expected server and RTMPS as possible SSL or certificate causes. A timeout can occur when a client attempts cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Confirm protocol, full URL, TLS support, and server-name handling before changing video settings.

YouTube shows no incoming video or flags stream health
- Compare the encoder output with the selected broadcast and current stream key; a stale key or wrong endpoint can send the stream elsewhere or prevent it reaching YouTube.
- Check FFmpeg’s input and encoder logs for a missing file, unsupported codec, or failed output connection.
- Check that the outgoing frame rate, resolution, codec, and bitrate agree with the profile you intend to use, then review the Live Control Room message for the specific reported issue.
Video is unstable, drops frames, or disconnects
Measure sustained upload again at the encoder location, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a profile the connection can sustain, and test it under representative conditions. A speed-test peak is not proof of 24/7 capacity. If the connection or machine fails intermittently, address that underlying risk and verify process restart behavior rather than repeatedly changing unrelated codec options.
There is no sound or the loop is not continuous
Confirm the input actually contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg maps and encodes it as expected. For a file loop, verify -stream_loop -1 is applied to the intended input and that the file can be read repeatedly. A playlist or multi-file workflow needs its own input and transition testing; the single-file example does not configure a playlist.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for a 24/7 feed
Only stream material you own or have permission to use, including music, video, and any other included audio. A loop does not grant rights to replay content, and a stream key does not bypass YouTube’s copyright or live-stream rules. Check the current restrictions and notices in YouTube Studio before making the feed continuous. Repeated or minimally changed material may also raise monetization and reused-content questions; eligibility and policy outcomes depend on YouTube’s current rules and the channel’s content, so do not assume that being live 24/7 makes a channel eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a home computer and connection involved, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo pricing for the available billing lengths and the upload-time calculator to estimate how long your files may take to transfer. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
