A black screen during an FFmpeg loop can come from the file, stream mapping or encoding, YouTube ingest, a loop seam, or a network interruption. Find the first stage where the picture goes black before changing settings: check the source and FFmpeg output, then YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming preview and health messages, and finally public playback. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that it is sending usable video.
Find where the picture first goes black
- Check the source file. Play it independently and inspect the affected section. Confirm it contains a video stream and that the picture is not already black.
- Check FFmpeg’s logs and output. Confirm a video stream is selected and mapped to the output. Look for decoding or mapping failures, encoder errors, and output disconnects. If possible, inspect the local output before attributing the problem to YouTube.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health. In YouTube Live Control Room, review the preview and any health messages. YouTube says its dashboard reports errors with timestamps and distinguishes critical and moderate messages; follow the specific error shown rather than guessing at a cause (YouTube Live streaming errors).
- Check public playback last. If the incoming preview is correct but the public player is black, the problem may be a separate playback or platform condition. The sources cited here do not establish a specific fix for that case.
This sequence separates a bad or unreadable source from a wrong stream mapping, an ingest-format problem, and a failure that occurs only after the stream reaches YouTube.
Check YouTube’s ingest format and encoder settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Match bitrate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s guidance, and choose a rate your upload connection can sustain (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the live stream will contain. A stream that is black throughout is not fixed by adjusting the loop flag if the video is missing or incorrectly mapped.

If YouTube reports “Incorrect stream format”
For that specific error, YouTube says to change the stream to H.264 video and AAC audio (YouTube live streaming error messages). Apply that guidance when the message appears; do not assume this is the problem when YouTube reports no such error.
Check the loop, stream mapping, and repeat boundary
The loop option controls repetition; it does not establish that FFmpeg selected the right video stream or is producing valid output. A community report illustrates the general command arrangement below, but it is a user example, not a universal prescribed command. Adapt options to your installed FFmpeg version, input streams, and YouTube stream key; do not paste a command without checking its mappings and output settings (FFmpeg.wasm community issue).

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4 ... -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
The ellipsis is intentional: the required encoding and mapping options depend on the file and target settings. Confirm that the output includes the intended video stream, and keep your stream key private.
If blackness happens at every loop seam
Inspect the last and first frames, plus audio and video timestamps around the repeat boundary. A repeatable fault at the same boundary is more consistent with a seam or media-timing issue than with a continuously unsupported codec, though that observation alone does not prove the cause. Variable-frame-rate media may also contribute to long-run timing drift; it is not established as a cause of black video. Preparing a constant-frame-rate source can help reduce drift, but first verify that the actual symptom is timing-related.

If the file has no audio, a third-party guide demonstrates adding a silent AAC track and mapping the original video with generated audio (Streamloop’s FFmpeg looping guide). Treat that as an optional technique, not an official YouTube requirement established by its encoder guidance.
Distinguish a network interruption from black media
If FFmpeg logs show output-write errors or a temporary connection failure, consult the FIFO muxer documentation. FFmpeg documents an RTMP recovery example using -f fifo -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. The example attempts recovery every second indefinitely (FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation).

Recovery can help with a temporary output interruption. It cannot create a missing video stream or make an unsupported format valid. Use documentation that matches your installed FFmpeg version; online documentation may describe a newer revision.

| What you see | Where to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The source itself is black or fails to play at the affected point | Original file and its video stream | Verify or replace the source before changing YouTube settings. |
| The file plays correctly, but FFmpeg logs show mapping, decoding, or encoder errors | FFmpeg stream selection, output mapping, and continuing logs | Correct the selected video stream or address the reported error. |
| YouTube preview is black or shows an ingest error | Live Control Room health messages and the specific error text | Apply the relevant YouTube guidance; for “Incorrect stream format,” use H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| Blackness occurs at the same point on each repeat | Last and first frames and timestamps at the loop boundary | Inspect the seam and media timing; distinguish a brief boundary fault from a stream that is black throughout. |
| FFmpeg reports output-write or temporary network failures | Output logs and FIFO muxer recovery behavior | Consider documented FIFO recovery for interruptions, not as a fix for invalid video. |
| YouTube preview is healthy but public playback is black | Public player and platform status or playback conditions | The available sources do not identify a specific remedy; do not keep changing encoding settings without evidence of an ingest fault. |
Keep FFmpeg running, or move looping to the cloud
Running FFmpeg yourself gives command-line control, but the computer or server running it needs to remain on and connected. A managed cloud option can handle the always-on loop instead. StreamNeo is #1 among the 24/7 YouTube looping options discussed here because it runs from the cloud, accepts uploads at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
