Home on Fire redirects the Home action through an accessibility service; Amazon’s home screen may appear briefly first. Check your Fire TV’s operating system before installing anything: the project lists Fire OS 7 and 8 as supported, but not Fire OS 6 or earlier, or Vega OS.
Check your Fire TV’s operating system first
On the Fire TV, open Settings → My Fire TV (or Device) → About → Software Version. Note both the exact model and installed software version. Amazon distinguishes Android-based Fire OS devices from Vega OS devices in its Fire TV operating system overview.

Home on Fire’s project documentation lists Fire OS 7 and 8 as supported, and Fire OS 6 and earlier and Vega OS as unsupported. Its maintainer reports testing Fire OS 8.1.7.4–8.1.8.2 on an Amazon Ember TV and Fire OS 7.7.1.4–7.7.1.5. Those are project-reported compatibility details, not a guarantee for every model or later firmware. Check the project’s compatibility notes before proceeding.

Set up Home on Fire to redirect the Home button
- Install your preferred launcher. Open it once and complete any initial setup it requires.
- Get Home on Fire from its project release. The project says the app is sideload-only, with no Amazon Appstore release. Amazon explains how to connect to Fire TV with ADB and how to install and run apps; sideloading means installing an app from outside the Appstore.
- Enable the accessibility service. If the accessibility settings are available, open Settings → Accessibility and enable Home on Fire’s service. Then open Home on Fire, choose Choose target app…, and select your launcher.
- If Accessibility is blank or unresponsive, use the project’s ADB method. Enable ADB debugging in Fire TV developer options, connect to the device, install the APK, and grant the permission below. Then open Home on Fire, enable its service in the app, and choose the target launcher. The permission grant is a project-provided workaround, not an Amazon-supported way to set a default launcher.

Amazon’s general install example is adb install <path-to-apk-file>. Avoid older forum recipes that disable protected Amazon packages; they are not needed for the project’s documented setup.

Test Home, boot and wake behavior
Press Home while using another app and confirm that your selected launcher opens. If you want it to appear after boot or wake, test that behavior separately: Home on Fire documents an optional launch-on-boot feature, but results depend on the Fire TV model and OS. After a Fire OS update, test the redirect and any boot behavior again.
Know the limits and how to return to Amazon home
This is a redirect workaround, not a replacement of the OS-level home activity. Home on Fire’s documentation says Amazon’s launcher may flash for about 250 milliseconds before the chosen app opens. The project also reports a several-second app-switch delay on Fire OS 7 and no such delay on Fire OS 8; these are maintainer-reported observations, not guarantees.

Home on Fire documents these controls for returning to Amazon home or changing settings:
- Long-press Home: toggles between the selected target and Amazon home; the project describes this as the most reliable escape.
- Double-press Home: another documented toggle option.
- Long-press Menu: opens Home on Fire’s configuration screen.
Remote and device behavior can vary, so check that the escape controls work during setup. The project describes the app as local and sideload-only; obtain the APK from its project release and weigh the usual risks of installing software outside the Amazon Appstore.

Decide whether this workaround suits your setup
- Compatibility: confirm your exact model and installed OS against the project’s support notes; a listed supported OS does not guarantee every firmware version will behave identically.
- Setup access: try the Accessibility page first. If it fails, you will need a way to connect over ADB from a computer or Android device.
- Expected behavior: decide whether redirecting Home is enough or whether you also want to test the optional boot/wake launch.
- Recovery: verify the Home-button method for returning to Amazon’s launcher, and retest after system updates.
- Launcher choice: the available evidence does not establish one third-party launcher as the best universal option; choose based on your own layout and features needs.
