How to Make a Budget Windows Laptop Run Faster for Schoolwork

Check storage and Task Manager first, then use the Windows fix that matches the bottleneck. Learn when cleanup helps—and when older hardware is the constraint.

To make a budget laptop feel faster, first find what is slowing it down: check free storage and use Task Manager to see whether the CPU, memory, or disk is persistently busy. Then apply the matching Windows fix—such as freeing space, reducing startup apps, installing updates, or closing unused tabs. These steps can help, but they cannot overcome every hardware limit.

Why is my laptop so slow?

Several issues can contribute, and more than one may be present. Microsoft identifies low storage, too many startup apps running in the background, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current needs as possible causes. Start with checks before changing settings so you can focus on the likely bottleneck.

Check what is using system resources

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes page, look at CPU, Memory, and Disk while you do a normal school task, such as opening a document or browser tabs.
  3. Open Startup apps to review programs that launch when you sign in.

A brief spike is not the same as a persistent problem. If one resource stays heavily used during ordinary work, note which one; that points to what to investigate. Task Manager can also show network activity. Microsoft lists consistently high CPU, memory, or disk use, slow startup, poor performance in common tasks, low storage, frequent fan noise, and recurring errors as signs worth investigating.

Check available storage

Open Settings > System > Storage to see what is taking up space. A nearly full drive can slow some tasks and may make it harder to install Windows updates. Review the categories and proposed cleanup items before deleting anything, especially personal files.

How do I make my Windows laptop faster?

Choose the action that matches what you found. Microsoft presents these as troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed speed gains.

Install Windows updates and check for malware

  • Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install available updates. Also check optional updates for relevant drivers.
  • Run a malware scan using Windows Security or your installed security software. Remove or quarantine anything it identifies according to the software’s instructions.

Updates can address software or driver problems, while a malware scan checks for unwanted software that may be using resources. Neither is a promise of a noticeable performance increase.

Free space without deleting files blindly

In Settings > System > Storage, review cleanup recommendations and temporary files. Storage Sense can help manage files Windows identifies as removable; check its settings and the proposed items before allowing cleanup. You can also use Disk Cleanup where available. Do not assume that everything in a cleanup list is disposable if you need it.

A great-value lap top or computadora for everyday tasks.

If personal documents, photos, or other files are taking up most of the internal drive, move files you want to keep to external storage and verify the copies before removing originals. An external drive adds capacity; it does not directly upgrade the laptop’s processor or memory. Microsoft also documents external storage as an option in certain Windows update situations: the external device must have at least 10 GB free, and an internet connection is required.

Remove unused apps and reduce startup activity

  • Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer need through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label can vary by Windows version).
  • In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable programs you do not need to launch automatically. Avoid disabling items if you are unsure what they do.
  • Close unused apps and browser tabs when you need more memory for schoolwork.

Disabling a startup app prevents it from launching automatically; it does not uninstall the program. You can still open it when needed.

Adjust effects and power settings only if useful

If the laptop remains sluggish, reducing visual effects may help limit background work. In Windows, search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and select a simpler effects setting. The appearance will be less polished, so use this only if the trade-off suits you.

Windows power mode may offer a performance-oriented option. Microsoft warns that choosing Best performance can use more power, drain the battery faster, and make a laptop run warmer. It is a poor default for a student who needs long battery life or whose laptop already gets hot.

Restart after cleanup

Save your work, close unused apps, and restart the laptop. A restart clears temporary activity and can finish updates or software changes that are waiting to take effect. If the same slowdown returns during ordinary tasks, use Task Manager and Storage settings again rather than repeating cleanup without checking the cause.

When is a hardware limit the real problem?

Software maintenance cannot make an older or underpowered laptop behave like a newer machine. Microsoft cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” Windows 11’s minimum requirements include 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage; those are operating-system minimums, not a recommended configuration for smooth multitasking.

Whether RAM or storage can be upgraded depends on the exact laptop design. Check the full model number and the manufacturer’s service or specifications documentation before buying parts or opening the device. CPU eligibility for Windows 11 is model-specific as well; meeting the RAM and storage thresholds alone does not establish eligibility.

If CPU, memory, or disk use stays high during basic work after the software checks, or the laptop has recurring errors, frequent fan noise, or poor startup performance, consider having the device diagnosed. Compare any repair cost with the laptop’s age, upgradeability, support eligibility, and the school tasks it must handle. There is no model-independent upgrade or benchmark that guarantees a particular speed improvement.

Is your laptop still supported?

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. A Windows 10 laptop can still work, but this is a security and support concern—not a speed setting. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11, subject to the device’s compatibility.
