When you want to work directly with the source, export the project ZIP and edit its HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and generated assets in an external code editor. Playground’s documented editing flow is conversational; Google does not confirm that externally edited files can be imported back into Playground.
How do I make a game with Google Playground?
Playground is an experimental, browser-based platform for creating, playing, and sharing custom games. Start with a compact idea that explains what the player does, what counts as success, what ends the round, and the visual style. Google says creation begins with a plain-text description; guided flows and reference photos are also available. See the Google Playground Help Center for current product instructions.

Describe a playable loop
For example, you might ask for a one-screen arcade game in which the player moves left and right to catch falling objects, earns points for each catch, and loses a life after a miss. This is an illustrative prompt, not an official sample or a guarantee of what Playground will generate. Keeping the first version small gives you a clearer result to play and refine.

Submit the description and use the preview to try the game. Google describes Playground as a conversational creation experience where you can test a game and then ask for changes; that does not mean every generated game will be complete or free of bugs. Check whether the controls, scoring, and end condition behave as intended before adding more features. Google’s launch announcement, dated October 7, 2026, describes the platform as an early experiment.

How do I edit a game in Playground?
- Open Your Games and select the game you want to change.
- Click the pencil/edit icon to open the Creation Studio.
- Describe one change in plain language, such as “make the player move more slowly,” “show the score at the top left,” or “end the round after three misses.” These are examples, not official sample prompts.
- Try the updated game and check both the changed behavior and any rules that worked before.
- Repeat with another focused request if needed.
Playground supports conversational requests to change game logic, graphics, or rules. Google’s Help Center advises making clear, focused changes rather than combining many complex requests into one prompt. After each change, check the controls, scoring, restart path, display on the device you intend to use, and whether the update affected an earlier working rule. This is a manual check, not a claim that Playground provides automated testing.
Can I download the code?
Yes. In the game’s Creation Studio, choose Export (Download Zip). Google says the archive contains the game’s HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and generated asset files. You can open those files in an external code editor to inspect or modify them.

The Help Center documents exporting the ZIP, but does not confirm a workflow for importing externally edited files back into Playground. Treat the download as a way to continue work outside the service, not as a guaranteed round trip.
What files are in the Playground ZIP?
- HTML: the page structure for the game.
- JavaScript: game behavior and logic.
- CSS: styling and layout.
- Generated assets: files used by the game, such as its generated visual assets.
Those are the file types Google identifies; the Help Center does not specify a fixed folder layout or promise that every export contains identical files.

Can I edit the generated code myself?
Yes, after exporting the ZIP, you can work on the downloaded source in an external code editor. That gives you direct control over the files, but it requires you to understand the project well enough to make and test code changes. Keep an unchanged copy of the ZIP so you can recover the original if an edit breaks the game.

Google AI Studio Build mode is a separate product, not a Playground editing mode. Its documentation describes a Code tab, ZIP export, and GitHub synchronization; those features should not be assumed to apply to Playground. See Google AI Studio Build mode documentation for that separate workflow.

What happens when I publish an edited game?
If a game is already published, changes you make in the editor remain a private draft until you explicitly publish again. The existing published version remains playable while you work. When you publish the revised version, it is checked against Playground’s Community Guidelines. Google’s Help Center also says creators can keep games private, share them by link, or publish them to the Explore gallery; choose the visibility that suits the game.
Who can use Playground to create games?
Access details can change as the experimental service rolls out. At launch, Google said users aged 18 or older in the United States could browse and play, while game-generation access was rolling out in phases. The Help Center describes free play, a free generation tier with limited tokens refreshed weekly, and higher weekly token limits with a Google One AI plan. Free users may be able to join a waitlist for creation access, while a subscription may unlock immediate access. Check the Help Center for current eligibility and terms; these launch details do not establish worldwide availability.

Google has also described multiplayer as an early preview and says global platform leaderboards are unavailable for multiplayer games. The launch announcement presents Unity Spark integration as a future direction, with Unity Spark in testing—not as a currently available Playground workflow.
