You can make a purple-looking light at home by covering a torch with colored film, but that does not make it a dependable ultraviolet source. For fluorescence driven by UV, use a purpose-made UV-A LED light or a compatible fluorescent blacklight tube. The distinction matters: the film method passes colored visible light, while a black light is generally a longwave UV-A source.
What counts as a black light?
Ultraviolet light is divided by wavelength: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines UVA as 315–400 nanometers (nm), UVB as 280–315 nm, and UVC as 100–280 nm (CDC overview of ultraviolet radiation). Conventional black lights use longwave UVA.

Traditional fluorescent blacklight bulbs use mercury vapor and a phosphor coating to produce UVA. Their dark “blacklight blue,” or BLB, glass filter suppresses much of the visible output; the Fluorescent Mineral Society says the traditional fluorescent blacklight emission peaks near mercury’s 365 nm line (Fluorescent Mineral Society explainer).

LEDs typically do not need the same built-in filter, though a compatible filter can reduce visible violet spill in some designs. A germicidal UVC lamp is not a blacklight substitute: it emits a different part of the spectrum and has a different, hazardous use.

How to make a purple-looking light with a torch
This quick project creates a blue-and-purple visible-light effect. It is not a reliable way to produce a specified UV-A spectrum or to make fluorescent objects glow as a proper UV-A source would.
What you need
- A bright LED torch
- Two pieces of purple cellophane and one piece of blue cellophane
- Scissors and a rubber band
For a phone-torch version, use clear tape and blue and purple permanent markers instead. Keep the marker ink on the tape, not on the phone. National Science Week Australia’s activity advises adult supervision for children (“Build a Blacklight” activity).

Steps
- Cut the cellophane into pieces large enough to cover the torch lens.
- Layer two purple pieces and one blue piece over the lens.
- Secure the layers with a rubber band, keeping the covering clear of the torch’s controls and ventilation.
- Switch on the torch and use it as a colored-light effect, not as a verified UV source.
The phone method uses clear tape colored with blue and purple permanent markers over the phone torch. The activity explains that the colored layers absorb much of the torch’s visible output and pass blue and purple visible light. It supplies no measured spectrum or output for either makeshift method, so do not assume ordinary white LEDs or the colored covering provide useful UV-A.
How to get genuine UV-A illumination
Choose a purpose-made UV-A LED flashlight or lamp that states its wavelength, or a fluorescent blacklight bulb installed in a compatible fixture. A stated wavelength near 365 nm is close to the traditional fluorescent blacklight line described by the Fluorescent Mineral Society. The available sources do not establish a universal performance winner between 365 nm and 395 nm products.

Before choosing a light, check the details that affect whether it suits your use:
- Wavelength: Look for a stated UV-A wavelength rather than relying on a purple appearance.
- Visible spill and filtering: Fluorescent BLB tubes have a filter integrated into the glass. LED filtering depends on the specific design; verify whether an optional filter is compatible instead of assuming a generic filter will fit.
- Coverage and intended use: Compare the light’s stated coverage with the size and distance of the area you want to illuminate. The cited sources do not provide controlled product brightness comparisons.
- Power and fit: Check the power source for a flashlight or the bulb and fixture compatibility for a fluorescent tube.
- Safety information: Follow the product’s instructions. Safe distance and exposure time depend on the particular light’s measured output, and cannot be inferred from wavelength alone.
How to check whether an object fluoresces
Use a fluorescent target rather than the color of the light itself to judge the effect. UCAR’s classroom activity uses tonic water: quinine absorbs UV energy and re-emits visible light, making the liquid glow blue (UCAR Center for Science Education activity).

- Place tonic water in a clear cup and illuminate it with the black light.
- For a simple screen test, compare a cup exposed directly with an otherwise similar cup behind the candidate screen.
- Judge the difference qualitatively and keep the setup consistent; this comparison does not measure the light’s wavelength or output.
Other possible test objects include highlighter ink, fluorescent paints, cosmetics, and glow-in-the-dark toys. A visible purple beam alone does not prove that a light emits useful UV-A.

UVA is still ultraviolet radiation. The CDC says UVA penetrates deeper into skin than UVB, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that both UVA and UVB can damage skin (FDA information on UV radiation). Do not stare into a UV source or point it at another person’s eyes.

Do not use a UVC or germicidal lamp for a blacklight project. The FDA warns that UVC can cause severe skin burns and eye injuries and says never to look directly into a UVC source, even briefly.
For LED exposure, the European Commission notes that risk depends on the spectrum, intensity, duration, eye health, and viewing direction (European Commission summary on LEDs). There is no general safe distance or exposure duration to apply to every consumer light; consult the specific product’s instructions.
