How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream Resume After OBS Crashes

OBS reconnect can handle some output drops, but a crash needs an external restart—and playlist position must be tested separately.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS can reconnect a stream output after a temporary connection failure, but it does not restart itself after the OBS process crashes—and its documented VLC playlist controls do not promise to restore the previous track and timestamp. For a more resilient 24/7 lofi stream, configure OBS’s reconnect option for connection drops, use a looping playlist source, and arrange a separate way to relaunch OBS after a crash. Then test whether your setup resumes the intended media position and whether YouTube keeps the broadcast available. These are separate recovery problems, and no single setting is documented to guarantee all of them.

First, distinguish a connection drop from an OBS crash

If OBS remains open but loses its connection to YouTube, its automatic reconnect setting can retry a supported streaming output. If the OBS application terminates, that reconnect feature cannot relaunch the program. And even if OBS starts again and sends video, that does not establish that the playlist will return to the same item and timestamp or that YouTube will continue the same broadcast.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Output disconnect: OBS is still running; automatic reconnect may retry the stream output.
  • OBS process crash: OBS has exited; an external operating-system or process-supervisor mechanism is needed to start it again.
  • Playlist recovery: After OBS starts, the media source’s current item and playback position need to be checked separately.
  • YouTube broadcast state: The event’s availability after an encoder restart depends on the YouTube workflow and should be verified rather than assumed.

OBS’s overview identifies automatic reconnect as an advanced setting, and its output reference describes retries for outputs that support reconnect. Neither makes automatic reconnect an application restart mechanism. See OBS’s streaming overview and OBS’s output reference.

Configure OBS to retry a dropped stream output

Use this for intermittent network or ingest interruptions while OBS itself remains open. The exact labels and available controls can vary by OBS release.

  1. In OBS, open Settings and go to Advanced.
  2. Find the Automatic Reconnect controls and enable automatic reconnect.
  3. Set the retry delay and maximum retries to values suitable for your connection and operating needs, if those controls are present. OBS’s output reference describes retry intervals that increase between attempts; it does not promise that every YouTube interruption will recover.
  4. Apply the settings, then test by interrupting the network or stream output while leaving OBS running. Confirm that OBS retries and check the YouTube event separately.

This handles only a supported output disconnect. It cannot restart OBS after a process crash, and it does not checkpoint a playlist’s current position.

Set up a looping lofi playlist source

OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple media files as a playlist and loop that playlist. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. For an ordered lofi rotation, leave shuffle off and decide deliberately how the source should behave when it becomes visible or hidden in a scene.

  1. Install VLC in the architecture matching your OBS installation.
  2. In the scene that will be sent to YouTube, add a VLC Video source.
  3. Add the lofi video files in the order you want them to play.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you need a predictable order.
  5. Set the source’s visibility behavior intentionally, and verify that the source is visible in the scene used for streaming.
  6. Test a normal loop before relying on recovery: confirm the end of the list returns to the beginning and that the intended files play with audio and video.

OBS documents playlist looping and visibility behavior, but not restoration of the current playlist item or playback timestamp after the OBS process crashes. A loop means the list can repeat during normal playback; it is not a saved playback checkpoint. See OBS’s media sources documentation.

Restart OBS after an application crash

Because OBS’s reconnect setting does not relaunch the application, use a separate process supervisor or an operating-system scheduled restart if unattended relaunch is part of your design. Treat this as an external implementation, not an OBS feature. Configure it to start OBS with the intended profile and scene, and verify that OBS actually begins sending the expected output after launch.

  • Use a dedicated machine and account configuration that can launch OBS without someone needing to complete an interactive prompt.
  • Start OBS with the profile, scene collection, and scene intended for the lofi stream; check that the media source and stream output are active.
  • Set a sensible restart policy so a persistent configuration error does not create an uncontrolled restart loop.
  • Check logs or supervisor status after a failure, and verify the YouTube event rather than treating a running OBS process as proof that viewers have a live broadcast.

An external restart can bring OBS back, but it does not by itself restore the VLC playlist’s previous item or timestamp. If exact continuation matters, use a playback arrangement that persists its current item and time, or build a restart workflow that saves and restores that state. The official OBS documentation cited here does not establish a built-in VLC playlist checkpoint-and-restore option for a process crash.

Check the YouTube stream key and broadcast state

YouTube describes a stream key as the credential and address used by an encoder to send a feed. Its documentation says custom stream keys can be reused, and that auto-start and auto-stop can let an encoder start or stop a stream when those controls are enabled. Those settings help manage the ingest workflow; they do not document recovery of OBS’s playlist state or guarantee that a particular broadcast will remain available after every crash.

YouTube’s wording is: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or logs you share publicly. Before relying on unattended recovery, confirm the correct key is configured in OBS and review the auto-start/auto-stop settings for the workflow you actually use. After a restart, inspect the YouTube event or broadcast status to determine whether the encoder feed is being received and whether the event is live. See YouTube Help’s stream-key guidance.

Run a controlled recovery test before going unattended

Test privately or use a non-public workflow appropriate to your channel. A network interruption and an OBS process crash exercise different recovery paths, so test both.

  1. Baseline: Start the intended stream and note the current playlist item and approximate playback time.
  2. Output-loss test: Interrupt the network or output while leaving OBS open. Observe whether automatic reconnect retries and inspect the YouTube event state.
  3. Process-crash test: Stop or terminate OBS in a controlled test, then let the configured external supervisor or scheduled mechanism relaunch it.
  4. Playlist check: Record which item and timestamp play after OBS restarts. Repeat the test if you need to know whether the behavior is consistent.
  5. Broadcast check: In YouTube, verify whether the encoder feed is arriving and whether the event is live, waiting, or ended. Do not assume that a reused key means the same broadcast continues.
  6. Recovery check: Confirm audio, video, scene visibility, and the playlist’s next transition; review OBS and supervisor logs for errors.

Use the result to decide whether your goal is simply to restore a live feed or to resume the exact track and time. The first can be tested with reconnect, process relaunch, and YouTube event checks; the second requires verified playback-state persistence.

Common recovery failures and what to check

Symptom Likely distinction What to check
OBS stays open but the YouTube feed drops Output or network interruption Confirm automatic reconnect is enabled for the output, then inspect OBS’s retry behavior and YouTube’s event state.
OBS is closed after a crash Application process ended Automatic reconnect cannot relaunch it. Check whether an external supervisor or operating-system restart is configured and able to start the intended OBS profile.
OBS restarts, but the playlist starts at a different item or time Playlist looping is not checkpoint restoration Verify the observed restart behavior. If exact continuation is required, use playback-state persistence rather than assuming OBS saves the VLC position.
VLC Video is unavailable as a source VLC dependency or architecture mismatch Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen or check OBS for the source.
Playlist order changes unexpectedly Shuffle or visibility behavior Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed rotation and review how source visibility affects playback.
OBS is running after relaunch, but YouTube is not live Encoder restart and broadcast state are separate Check the stream key, output status, auto-start/auto-stop configuration, and the YouTube event state. YouTube does not document a universal crash-recovery duration or same-event guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded lofi videos streaming to YouTube without depending on an OBS computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Its documented service covers the cloud-streaming workflow, but do not assume it restores a specific OBS playlist position after an OBS crash: it runs independently of OBS.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the cloud stream to keep running.
  • Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
  • Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Other durations are available; the same product is included on every plan, with the billing length changing.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
