For watching a nature livestream with the video visible, the official YouTube app is the best first choice for most Android users in India. It supports picture-in-picture (PiP) for non-music long-form videos, so the stream can stay in a small floating window while you use another app. If you want playback with the screen off, that is a separate feature: YouTube Help says background play in its mobile apps is available to signed-in Premium members. If “monitor” means leaving a phone unattended around the clock, none of the options below is documented as guaranteeing uninterrupted 24/7 playback.
Choose based on what “monitor” means
- Watch while using another app: use YouTube’s picture-in-picture mode. The video remains visible in a floating window.
- Listen with the screen off: use YouTube background play if your account and video are eligible. YouTube Help documents this for signed-in Premium members.
- Leave a phone playing continuously: treat this as best-effort playback, not a guaranteed 24/7 service. Phone power management, connectivity, and app behavior can interrupt it.
Best overall: the official YouTube app
The official app is the most straightforward option for a YouTube livestream: it uses YouTube’s own playback experience, and its Help page says PiP is available to all users on Android and iOS for non-music long-form video. That makes it the clearest free choice when you want to keep the nature stream visible while browsing or using another app. Availability can depend on the video being eligible and on the device’s PiP settings.

For a floating video
Start the livestream in YouTube, then leave the app using your device’s normal Home or app-switching gesture. If PiP is enabled and the video is eligible, it should shrink to a movable overlay. YouTube calls this picture-in-picture; it is not the same as background play, because the video remains on screen.

YouTube Help says background play on mobile is available to signed-in Premium members. Google’s India blog announced on 12 March 2026 that background play and downloads were rolling out with Premium Lite in India for most videos. That announcement does not establish that every livestream, including every nature stream, is eligible. Check the benefits shown for your account and the behavior of the specific stream rather than assuming screen-off playback will work.

Free alternative: NewPipe
NewPipe’s project lists live-stream viewing, popup playback, background audio, and channel notifications. It may suit viewers who want a free alternative with a floating player or screen-off audio. These are capabilities stated by the project, not a guarantee that every YouTube livestream will work continuously.
NewPipe explains that YouTube support uses website parsing or an internal API because YouTube’s official API is restricted for its purposes. As YouTube changes its services, compatibility can change too. The project recommends installing through its F-Droid repository or GitHub releases; prefer those project-recommended sources rather than an unfamiliar download site.

VLC: useful for network streams, but not a verified YouTube substitute
VLC for Android is free and open source, and its Google Play India listing says it plays network streams. VideoLAN’s settings documentation also describes background video and PiP modes. That makes VLC relevant for supported network-stream sources, but the cited documentation does not confirm reliable opening of a YouTube livestream URL. For this specific job, do not choose VLC on the assumption that any YouTube link will play in it.

- The stream buffers or disconnects: check the connection and try again. A weak or changing network can disrupt playback; an app feature description is not an uptime guarantee.
- NewPipe no longer opens a stream: compatibility may have changed because its project describes using website parsing or an internal API. Check the project’s own release or installation information.
