To run a 24/7 white-noise stream on YouTube with a black screen, send a looping, rights-cleared noise track and a black video scene from streaming software such as OBS to YouTube Live. You can run the encoder on your own computer, or use StreamNeo to keep uploaded video playing from the cloud. Before building either setup, confirm your channel can livestream and decide how you will handle interruptions and recordings longer than 12 hours.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Check access in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- A computer, a stable internet connection, and encoder software for the do-it-yourself method. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started: YouTube live streaming tips.
- A noise recording you created, commissioned, or have permission to broadcast and archive. Keep a copy of the license or other permission.
- A plan for monitoring interruptions and preserving any replay you need. A continuous stream is not a promise of uninterrupted service or a single complete YouTube archive.
Prepare white-noise audio you can legally stream
Use audio you made yourself or audio whose license explicitly allows the intended YouTube livestream and any saved archive. Permission to listen to or download a track does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it. Before going live, listen through the file and check for abrupt starts or endings, clicks, silence, clipping, and other sounds you do not want in the stream. If you plan to loop a shorter recording, test the transition between its end and beginning. Keep your rights documentation with the audio file.
Make the black-screen stream with your own computer
The exact controls vary by OBS version and operating system; YouTube’s documentation describes connecting an encoder, not a prescribed OBS scene recipe. The workflow below is therefore a practical setup, not a claim that every OBS release uses identical labels.

- Build a black video scene. In OBS, create a scene and make its video output black—for example, by using a black color source that fills the canvas. Check that no desktop capture, camera, or other visible source appears above it.
- Add the noise to the audio mix. Add the prepared audio file as a media source or use another playback route supported by your setup. Configure it to continue or loop as needed, then listen to the output. Disable or control system audio so notifications and unrelated computer sounds do not enter the broadcast.
- Choose a sustainable video output. A static black image does not call for elaborate video production. Choose a resolution and bitrate your internet connection can reliably sustain; avoid selecting a higher setting without a reason. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings table before configuring output because supported settings can change: YouTube live streaming tips and encoder guidance.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set privacy and other stream details for a test or public broadcast as appropriate. YouTube’s setup guide explains the encoder workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS using the stream details. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start and inspect a test. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the YouTube preview. Confirm the image is black and the noise is audible and steady. Check playback from a viewer device and, if recording locally, confirm the file is growing. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. If YouTube’s workflow presents the step, select Go live in Live Control Room only after checking the preview.
- Keep the setup recoverable. A computer-based stream relies on that computer, the encoder software, power, and the network connection staying available. Monitor stream quality and have a way to restart after an outage; YouTube recommends choosing quality that the connection can reliably sustain and checking stream quality: YouTube live streaming tips.
Plan for YouTube’s replay limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but if a stream exceeds 12 hours it may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one continuous 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete replay. If you need a YouTube archive, consider ending and restarting sessions before the limit; that creates separate broadcasts and a service interruption. For a local copy, record on your own system and verify that the recording is being saved and growing. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams.
Copyright, monetization, and sleep-related claims
Rights apply to the sound and the broadcast
Black video does not remove copyright obligations for the audio. Clear the rights for livestream use and any archive, and do not assume that a track is safe just because it is described as royalty-free or is available to download; read the applicable license.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the current YouTube stream. If the key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, reset or recopy it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- The preview is not black: Check the OBS scene and source order. Hide or remove any camera, display capture, or other source visible above the black background, then inspect the YouTube preview again.
- The noise stops, clicks, or plays twice: Check the audio source’s playback and looping behavior in your OBS version, test the file transition, and make sure the same file is not active through two audio routes. Listen from a viewer device as well as the encoder.
- The stream becomes unstable or drops: Lower output settings to a level your connection can sustain, check the network and computer, and restart the encoder if needed. A home setup cannot keep broadcasting while its computer, power, software, or connection is unavailable.
- The 24/7 broadcast has no complete replay: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use shorter sessions if a platform archive matters, or make and verify a separate local recording.
- You cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification and whether a livestream restriction has applied within the prior 90 days. Also confirm the account meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement.
