You can keep a prerecorded nursing course playing on YouTube Live by sending it through a hardware encoder or a cloud streaming service. First enable YouTube Live, connect an encoder with your stream URL and key, and test the full playback and recovery path. Before presenting the stream as nursing continuing education, separately confirm the course’s accreditation, learner-engagement, evaluation, and completion-tracking requirements: a public YouTube stream does not itself award contact hours.
Choose the right setup for continuous playback
A YouTube Live stream needs an encoder to send video to YouTube. For prerecorded material, the encoder or service must be able to play uploaded media continuously; a camera-oriented live setup alone is not enough.

Create the stream in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room to create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: share it only with people and systems that need it, and replace it if it is exposed.

Configure prerecorded playback
In the encoder or service, select the course recording or playlist and set the desired playback behavior, such as looping or scheduled playback if supported. The exact controls depend on the chosen product; YouTube’s encoder list is a starting point for devices and services that support prerecorded streaming.

Preview and verify the stream
Start the encoder’s output and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Test the entire path—not just the file—including audio, captions, the learner-facing page, and recovery after an interruption. These are production checks, not guarantees made by YouTube.

Go live and monitor
When the preview is correct and the stream is ready, start the broadcast from the encoder or service and confirm it is live in YouTube Studio. Keep a person responsible for responding to playback, audio, rights, or access problems.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams. A 24/7 broadcast therefore needs a deliberate recording plan. One practical option is to run shorter sessions and test each handoff so playback resumes cleanly. Alternatively, maintain a separate recording workflow rather than relying on a 24/7 stream archive as the sole course copy. Review YouTube’s encoder and live-stream guidance and test the session transition before launch.
Clear rights and follow YouTube’s live rules
All live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Before streaming, secure the rights needed for every element in the course: slides, music, photographs, video clips, and recorded voices. Do not assume that permission to use material elsewhere automatically covers a YouTube live broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream or interrupt or terminate it. Even licensed material may trigger interruption if the rightsholder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, and resolve permissions and allowlisting with rights holders before going live.
Separate a public stream from nursing contact hours
Making a course available on YouTube does not, by itself, make it eligible for nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours. ANCC describes routes that include becoming an accredited provider, becoming an approved provider through an accredited approver, or obtaining approval for an individual activity. Confirm the operator’s actual status and the applicable accreditor’s rules before advertising the course as credit-bearing.

Design for the learner and the activity
ANCC says eligible NCPD activities address a knowledge, skill, or practice gap for professional registered nurses, use evidence or best-available evidence, and are planned independently from ineligible-company influence. A linear public stream may not provide the engagement, evaluation, or completion evidence needed for a particular activity. Plan how learners participate, how the activity is evaluated, and how completion is verified under the relevant provider and accreditor requirements. See the ANCC NCPD FAQ.
If you offer the recording as an enduring activity
ANCC defines enduring material as an on-demand, learner-paced activity rather than one tied to a designated participation time or place. Its 2025 NCPD Accredited Provider Policy and Operations Manual says enduring activity content must be reviewed at least once every three years, or sooner when developments require, and its expiration date cannot exceed three years. If a live recording is offered to a new learner group, ANCC treats it as a new activity; engagement strategies, evaluation, and contact-hour criteria should fit that format. Confirm with the responsible provider how these rules apply to the course and how its learner records will be maintained. Read the ANCC FAQ and 2025 NCPD provider manual.
For jointly accredited or medical-education contexts, ACCME says its current Standards for Integrity and Independence apply to accredited education in person or virtually. That standard does not establish that a particular nursing course or YouTube stream is ACCME-accredited. See ACCME’s standards.

A hardware encoder requires a device and a local operating setup; a cloud service shifts playback and streaming operations off the course operator’s computer. Compare the options based on whether they support scheduled prerecorded playback, how they expose stream health and recovery, who monitors interruptions, and how you will handle sessions and archives around YouTube’s 12-hour threshold. If contact hours are offered, include the separate cost and work of learner engagement, evaluation, and participation records. Troubleshoot common launch problems
- Live streaming is not available: Verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is first-time enablement, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream URL and key entered in the encoder against the Live Control Room. If the key may have been shared improperly, replace it and update authorized encoder settings.
- The preview is missing or playback is wrong: Confirm the encoder is sending the selected file or playlist, then check the preview and stream health before going live. Test audio and captions as well as video.
- The stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Identify the matched material, secure the required rights, and ask the rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- A long broadcast has no usable archive: Do not rely on automatic archiving for sessions of 12 hours or more. Use shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow, and test the handoff or recording before launch.
- Learners watch but cannot demonstrate completion: YouTube availability is not a learner-completion record. Ask the responsible NCPD provider or accreditor what engagement, evaluation, and verification method the activity requires.
