You can run a rain-sounds YouTube livestream from a Raspberry Pi by sending a continuous, rights-cleared audio-and-video source through a streaming encoder to YouTube Live. First confirm that your channel can livestream, then configure the stream key, begin with YouTube’s 720p30 profile recommendation of 2 Mbps video, and test the setup while monitoring stream health. A Raspberry Pi can be the always-on encoder, but the available specifications do not establish a tested Pi-specific 24/7 recipe or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream using an encoder. YouTube says encoder livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s guide to going live.
- A Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS, a microSD card, suitable power, and a network connection. Raspberry Pi 5 has Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, and a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply and says active cooling can help the board perform under load. These are hardware specifications, not a guarantee that a particular stream profile will encode reliably.
- A rain recording and visual that you have the right to stream and archive. YouTube makes the creator responsible for necessary rights to live content, including music rights. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
- Streaming software configured as an encoder. The official material cited here does not establish a particular Pi software package, loop command, or tested restart configuration, so validate those choices on your own board before relying on them.
Raspberry Pi OS is the officially supported operating system, and Raspberry Pi Imager can write it to a microSD card. The official downloads page currently lists a 64-bit release dated 15 September 2026, based on Debian 13 (Trixie) with Linux kernel 6.18; releases change, so confirm the current version at Raspberry Pi OS downloads. Raspberry Pi 5 supports current Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and legacy Bookworm, according to the Raspberry Pi 5 product page.

Prepare the rain loop and visual
Use content you are allowed to broadcast
Use rain audio and any accompanying image or video that you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to transmit on YouTube and keep in the stream archive. A track being available online or labeled “free” does not by itself establish that live broadcast and archiving are permitted. Keep records of permissions and license terms, including any attribution or usage limits.

Make playback continuous
Choose a continuous source that your encoder can keep playing, such as a long rain recording or a loop assembled from authorized material. If you use a short loop, listen and watch for abrupt joins, gaps, clicks, or visual jumps before going live. Use a simple still or low-motion visual if it suits the stream; a more elaborate moving scene is not automatically better and can add encoding load.

- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5

The exact media-player and looping setup depends on the software you choose. Test that the source repeats as intended and that playback does not stop at the end of a file. Do not assume that restarting the encoder will also restart media playback unless you have verified that behavior.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Confirm livestream access. Open YouTube Studio and check that the channel can go live. If YouTube requires verification or activation, complete that before configuring the Pi.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or configure the live stream. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for encoder ingest; the current setup walkthrough is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Use the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube stream. Do not publish or share the key: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel. Treat it like a password and replace it if exposed.
- Set visibility and metadata deliberately. Choose the visibility, title, description, and other settings you want in Live Control Room. For an initial test, use a private or unlisted stream if those options are available for your use case, then confirm the intended audience can access it before switching to the final setting.
Choose a conservative video and audio profile
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings and select only options supported by your encoder.

| Setting | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps is a reasonable initial target for a static ambience stream. | Confirm the encoder sustains the chosen profile and YouTube reports a healthy stream. The platform recommendation is not a Pi performance benchmark. |
| Video bitrate | YouTube lists 2 Mbps for 720p30. | Use constant bitrate if supported, and check actual stream health rather than assuming the configured figure is being maintained. |
| Video codec | Use a codec supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance, such as H.264. | Do not select a format your Pi software cannot encode or YouTube cannot ingest in the selected configuration. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 are listed in YouTube’s general encoder guidance. | Listen to the Live Control Room preview and a separate viewer playback for clipping, silence, or sync problems. |
| Transport | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted option. | Use the ingest protocol and server address supplied for your stream. |
These are platform settings, not proof that a Raspberry Pi 5 can sustain every supported codec or combination around the clock. Start with a straightforward profile and verify CPU behavior, playback, and stream health on your own setup before making the stream public.
Connect the Pi and calculate upload headroom
The important network figure is sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom and testing with representative audio and video. For a 2 Mbps video stream, that means the total outgoing stream rate—including audio—must fit comfortably below the available upload capacity, with the recommended margin. See YouTube’s streaming tips for the network guidance.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
- Prefer a stable wired connection where practical; Raspberry Pi 5 includes Gigabit Ethernet. Wi-Fi is also available, but the hardware specifications alone do not establish which connection will be more reliable in your location.
- Test at the place and time the Pi will operate. Household congestion, router coverage, and ISP variation can make a nominal service rate a poor guide to sustained upload.
- Keep the Pi on a suitable USB-C power supply. Raspberry Pi’s recommendation for Pi 5 is 5V/5A; avoid assuming any USB-C adapter meets that requirement.
- Consider active cooling for sustained workloads and ensure the case does not prevent airflow. Cooling helps with operation under load but does not itself guarantee stable streaming.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.
- Let it run with the actual rain audio, visual, network connection, and chosen profile. Confirm the sound is audible and continuous, the picture is stable, and the stream health indicator does not report a problem.
- Check playback from a separate device or browser as a viewer. Verify the title, visibility, and archive behavior are what you expect.
- Test recovery deliberately: confirm what happens if the network drops, the media ends, or the encoder process stops. YouTube’s guidance recommends monitoring stream quality; it does not promise that a Pi setup will restart itself or remain uninterrupted.
- Only rely on an unattended setup after you have checked it over a representative operating period and have a way to notice failures. A 24/7 stream is an ongoing operation, not a one-time configuration.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect server URL or stream key, wrong ingest protocol, or encoder not started. | Re-copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room, check the encoder’s destination settings, and start the encoder again. If the key may have been exposed, replace it. |
| Stream health reports connection or quality problems | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, excess bitrate, or network interruption. | Measure sustained upload at the Pi’s location, reduce the profile if needed, preserve YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation, and test over the same network conditions as normal operation. |
| Audio stops or the stream becomes silent | Source playback ended, looping failed, or audio routing/configuration is wrong. | Check the media source independently, verify loop behavior, and inspect the encoder’s audio input and Live Control Room preview. |
| Video stutters or the Pi struggles | The selected encoding workload may exceed what the software and board sustain; heat or power may also be involved. | Return to a simpler profile such as 720p30, check the encoder’s load and temperature, use the recommended supply, and ensure airflow. Validate before raising resolution or frame rate. |
| The stream ends after a disconnect or process failure | The setup may not automatically restart its encoder, source playback, or ingest session. | Determine which component stopped, restart it, and test recovery behavior. Do not assume the stream will resume without a tested recovery arrangement. |
| A live stream or archive receives a rights complaint | Audio or visuals may not be cleared for live transmission or archiving. | Review the license and remove or replace material you are not entitled to use. You remain responsible for obtaining the necessary rights. |
