The exact setting behind any new phone’s longer runtime depends on its make, model, Android version, and software; those details are not identified here. These steps apply broadly, with Pixel-specific features labeled as such.
Why 30% can be workable—but isn’t a promise
Battery percentage tells you the charge remaining, not how many hours it will last. Navigation, mobile signal, screen use, games, streaming, and camera activity can change consumption substantially. A short trip with the screen mostly off is different from a long route with navigation running. There is no universal number of hours that 30% will provide.

Android settings also vary by manufacturer and version. Google’s Android battery-saving guidance recommends checking the phone maker’s support instructions for exact menus and notes that some suggestions apply only to Android 13 and later.
Start with the phone’s built-in power management
Battery Saver
When you need to preserve a low charge, turn on Battery Saver or the equivalent low-power mode if your phone offers it. Android’s general guidance says some phones include this mode to help a charge last longer. Its effects vary: it may limit background activity, visual effects, features, network connections, or app behavior. Notifications and some connections may be delayed, so consider whether you need timely alerts or uninterrupted connectivity before relying on it.

Adaptive Battery on Pixel phones
Google says Adaptive Battery is on by default on Pixel phones. It learns from recent app use and can reduce background activity for apps used less often. Google cautions that this can reduce performance or delay notifications; after a new-device setup or factory reset, optimization may take a few weeks to take full effect. Extreme Battery Saver, where available
Some Pixel phones offer Extreme Battery Saver as a more restrictive option when a charge is nearly depleted. It can limit more activity than ordinary Battery Saver, so it is best treated as an emergency measure rather than a setting to leave on when you need normal app access. Availability and behavior depend on the device. Google outlines the option in its Pixel low-battery guidance.

What to reduce when you’re away from a charger
Google’s Pixel guidance calls out several activities to limit when trying to stretch a low charge. These are practical suggestions, not a measured ranking for every Android phone.

- Pause video streaming and avoid graphics-heavy or interactive games.
- Turn off a hotspot when no one needs it, and avoid leaving it active in the background.
- Limit extensive camera use, especially repeated photo or video capture.
- Reduce other sustained screen-on activity, such as long calls or streaming, when it can wait.
If you need navigation, a hotspot, or the camera for safety or the purpose of the trip, keep using it. Battery-saving steps are trade-offs, not reasons to disable a needed function.

Choose between convenience and fewer interruptions

Pick the least disruptive option that meets your needs. If a delayed message, lost connection, or unavailable app would matter, do not assume a saver mode preserves it.

Heat can increase battery drain and harm the battery, according to Google’s Pixel battery and charging guidance. Avoid leaving a phone in a hot car or direct sun, and stop demanding tasks if the device becomes unusually warm.

If you expect to be out longer than the remaining charge can reasonably cover, arrange access to a compatible charger rather than counting on a percentage. Google says Pixel phones can charge over USB-C or wirelessly and recommends the supplied adapter; other adapters may charge slowly, fail to charge, or risk damage. For any phone, check the manufacturer’s instructions for a suitable cable, adapter, or wireless charger. No specific charger or wattage can be identified as compatible without the phone model.

You do not need to repeatedly drain a phone from full to empty to teach it its battery capacity. Google’s guidance says that cycling is unnecessary.

Check the exact setting on your Android phone
- Open the phone’s Settings and look for Battery or Battery & device care; the label and path differ by manufacturer.
- Review the available Battery Saver, low-power, or adaptive battery options and read the on-screen description before enabling them.
- For exact instructions, use the phone maker’s support page for your model and Android version. If the feature is on a Pixel, Google’s linked Pixel pages explain its specific behavior.
Without the make, model, Android version, and name of the feature, it is not possible to establish what makes a particular new phone last longer. The useful general approach is to conserve background and high-demand activity, understand what saver modes may interrupt, and keep a compatible charging option in reserve.
