Preventing premature failure starts with identifying the installed battery chemistry and model, matching charger settings to that battery, and tracking repeatable measurements against a commissioning baseline. There is no single inspection interval, voltage threshold, or replacement age that applies to every telecom tower battery: use the battery and power-system manuals, applicable standards, and the site’s operating conditions to set them.
Start with the battery and DC power system you actually have
Before setting a maintenance schedule, record the information that determines which procedures and limits apply:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Battery chemistry, manufacturer, exact model, serial number or asset ID, and installation date.
- Capacity, number of strings, series arrangement, and the system’s nominal DC voltage.
- Rectifier and controller models, current configuration, alarms, and any battery-monitoring equipment.
- Commissioning readings for individual blocks or units, strings, connections, and temperatures, taken using the manufacturer’s method.
Keep the baseline with the site’s maintenance records. IEEE has separate recommended practices for stationary valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries and stationary lithium-ion batteries, reflecting that maintenance and testing depend on chemistry: IEEE 1188-2025 for VRLA and IEEE 2962-2025 for lithium-ion. The public summaries describe their scope, not all test procedures or limits; consult the applicable standard and the installed battery documentation.

Use the battery manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable standard to set inspection frequency, measurement methods, and limits. A telecom-focused VRLA paper discusses periodic inspection and readings, but its examples are older and should not be treated as universal schedules or thresholds. IEEE’s VRLA guidance says maintenance recommendations should be adapted to the installation, operating conditions, manufacturer guidance, and available resources: IEEE 1188-2025.

At each scheduled inspection, record the same relevant observations in the same way so changes can be compared with both commissioning and the previous visit. Depending on the battery system and vendor procedure, useful records can include:
- String and individual block voltage.
- Battery and ambient temperature, current, and charger behavior.
- Connection condition, corrosion, leakage, swelling or distortion, and signs of abnormal heating.
- Internal-resistance or other ohmic readings, if the manufacturer’s procedure uses them.
- Controller alarms, event history, and relevant monitor readings.
Use an appropriate telecom battery monitor or qualified test equipment where it suits the installation. Vertiv describes its Albér Universal Xplorer Telecom Monitor as capturing string voltage, individual block voltage and temperature, ambient temperature, current, ripple current, and internal resistance: Vertiv telecom battery monitoring. Those are examples of monitor capabilities, not a requirement that every system measure every parameter. Before selecting equipment, verify compatibility with the battery chemistry, DC voltage, string count, instrumentation, communications interfaces, measurement needs, and site conditions.

Match charger settings to the battery chemistry and model
Do not assume a rectifier configuration intended for VRLA is suitable for lithium-ion, or copy voltage settings from another battery model. Use the installed battery and power-system manuals for the actual set points and configuration.

Incorrect charging configuration can undermine battery performance or safety. Have qualified personnel verify controller settings against the correct documentation, especially after a battery replacement, controller change, firmware/configuration update, or a change in battery chemistry.
Manage temperature, airflow, and ventilation for the site
Battery thermal management and ventilation need to reflect chemistry, enclosure design, and operating conditions. IEEE/ASHRAE Guide 1635-2022 covers stationary battery ventilation and thermal management, including VRLA and lithium-ion; its summary notes that ventilation is relevant to both battery life and hazards, which differ between lithium-ion and lead-acid systems: IEEE/ASHRAE Guide 1635-2022.

Follow the site design and current applicable safety guidance for cooling, airflow, gas detection, and alarms. Investigate unusual temperature history or repeated thermal alarms rather than treating them as routine variation. A telecom VRLA paper identifies unusually high ambient temperature as a reason for special inspection, but the installed battery manual and site safety procedures govern limits and corrective actions: telecom VRLA maintenance paper.

Investigate abnormal readings and events promptly
A severe discharge, overcharge, overheating event, alarm, or abnormal individual-unit measurement should trigger assessment under the applicable vendor procedure. Do not improvise corrective actions from a generic article or an older technical paper; follow current manufacturer and site safety procedures. If an abnormality is confirmed, document the event, measurements, action taken, and follow-up results so the next inspection can establish whether the condition was resolved or is recurring.

Set replacement decisions from evidence, not a universal age
Use the applicable chemistry-specific standard and battery documentation to define capacity testing, replacement criteria, and premature-failure response. IEEE 1188-2025 addresses stationary VRLA maintenance, testing, and replacement, including guidance for premature capacity failures; IEEE 2962-2025 provides the corresponding stationary lithium-ion practice: IEEE 1188-2025 and IEEE 2962-2025.
Service-life statements are product- and condition-specific. Vertiv states a 10-year operational life at 25°C for its Duration VRLA product family; that manufacturer statement does not establish a guarantee or a general expected life for other batteries or operating conditions: Vertiv Duration VRLA batteries.
Choose monitoring and maintenance methods for the installation
Whether a site uses periodic manual checks, monitoring, or both, compare the approach against the actual system rather than assuming one method fits all towers:
Quick Recap
- Does it support the installed chemistry, battery model, DC voltage, controller, and string arrangement?
- Can it capture the readings and trends needed for the manufacturer’s maintenance procedure?
- Does it provide useful battery-level data and alarms, and can it communicate through the site’s available interfaces?
- Can staff access and service it reliably at remote locations?
- Does the method account for the site’s thermal conditions, ventilation, duty cycle, and safety requirements?
- Are instruments and test methods appropriate for stationary batteries and consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable IEEE practice?
