Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallEstimate a multi-GPU AI home lab from the workload outward: choose cards for their memory, performance needs, fit, and cooling design; add their published board-power ratings; then account for the rest of the computer and measure wall power under the intended workload. Convert sustained electrical load to heat at roughly 3.412 BTU/h per watt, but treat that as a planning estimate—not a room measurement or a circuit-safety check.
Start with the workload, not a target GPU count
Before choosing cards, write down what the system must run: model sizes, expected throughput, and how many jobs or users need to run concurrently. Those requirements shape how much GPU memory and compute capacity you need. More cards are not automatically better: they also increase power demand, heat, physical-space requirements, and the difficulty of supplying each card with adequate airflow.

For every candidate GPU, collect the manufacturer’s specifications for memory, board power, dimensions, interface, and thermal design. NVIDIA’s professional desktop GPU specifications provide a starting point for its lineup. Check the exact model and edition: specifications can differ within a product family.

- Memory: Compare capacity per card with the models and workloads you intend to run. Installed memory across several GPUs does not automatically become one unified pool for every workload; whether a job can use memory across devices depends on its software and configuration.
- Power: Record the published board-power rating for each exact card. It is an input to a GPU-only subtotal, not a measurement of the computer’s outlet draw.
- Fit and connection: Check card dimensions, slot width, interface, motherboard lane layout, and the spacing available in the chosen case. Confirm these against the motherboard and chassis documentation before buying.
- Cooling: Identify whether the card uses an active, flow-through, or passive thermal design and what airflow the design assumes.
There is no particular motherboard or case specified here as suitable for a given card count. Verify the actual layout rather than assuming that a board’s slot count means every slot can be populated with the cards you selected.

Compare the power and cooling needs of the RTX PRO 6000 editions
NVIDIA’s current RTX PRO 6000 family specifications illustrate why an edition name matters when estimating a build:
| Edition | Published board power | Memory listed | Thermal design |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition | 400–600 W | 96 GB GDDR7 ECC | Passive |
| RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition | 600 W | 96 GB GDDR7 ECC | Double flow-through |
| RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q Workstation Edition | 300 W | 96 GB GDDR7 ECC | Active-cooled |
These are NVIDIA-published specifications, not measured system power. The Server Edition’s passive cooler assumes a suitable server airflow path; it is not simply an active desktop card without fans. A workstation with double flow-through and an actively cooled Max-Q card also have different airflow requirements.
NVIDIA describes the Max-Q model as “Optimized for dense workstation configurations (up to four GPUs), the Max-Q variant balances performance and power efficiency.” That is the manufacturer’s product positioning, not an independent test or a guarantee that a particular four-card home system will fit or cool the cards adequately.
NVIDIA’s enterprise reference architecture describes RTX PRO server configurations with two, four, and eight GPUs. That demonstrates that such configured systems exist; it does not mean a data-center server is the right choice for a home lab. Other cards in NVIDIA’s professional desktop lineup offer different power and form-factor options. Select for workload, memory, fit, airflow, and system budget rather than choosing the lowest-wattage card by default.

Calculate the GPU power subtotal, then estimate whole-system draw
First add the published board-power ratings for every installed GPU:
GPU subtotal (W) = sum of each installed GPU’s published board-power rating
For example, four RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q Workstation Edition cards at NVIDIA’s published 300 W rating each produce a GPU subtotal of 1,200 W at those ratings. This is arithmetic based on the card specifications, not a measured workload result.
Next account for the CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, fans, and other devices. Include power-supply conversion losses when estimating what the computer draws at the wall. Actual GPU consumption can vary with workload and operating conditions, so do not present a GPU subtotal—or a sum of rated component values—as measured outlet draw.

For operating-cost estimates and room planning, use a wattmeter to measure average whole-system wall power while the system runs the workload you expect to sustain. If a measurement is unavailable, make a conservative estimate that includes the full system and label it as an estimate. A manufacturer’s GPU board-power rating alone cannot establish system consumption.
Convert sustained electrical power to heat
For a first-pass heat estimate, multiply sustained electrical power by approximately 3.412:
Heat output (BTU/h) ≈ sustained electrical power (W) × 3.412
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using the four-card example, the 1,200 W GPU subtotal corresponds to about 4,094 BTU/h at those GPU board-power ratings (1,200 × 3.412). That is GPU-only arithmetic, not a measured room heat load; it excludes the rest of the computer and does not say how much heat reaches the room versus being exhausted elsewhere.

For a room-level estimate, use measured whole-system wall power during the intended sustained workload. Electrical energy consumed by the system ultimately becomes heat in the space unless the exhaust is carried elsewhere. Room conditions and exhaust routing therefore matter alongside the wattage.
If you need an energy-cost estimate, use measured average wall power and your own operating schedule and electricity rate:
Energy (kWh) = measured average wall power (kW) × operating hoursCost = energy (kWh) × local electricity rate
There is no universal monthly cost: both the local rate and the number of operating hours vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMatch the card coolers to the chassis and room
Cooling depends on the installed layout, not just the fan count printed on a case specification. Multiple cards can obstruct one another’s intake or exhaust, and a cooler that works in one chassis may not receive the airflow it expects in another.

- Active-cooled cards: Provide adequate intake and exhaust around the card fans; avoid layouts that starve the fans of cool air.
- Flow-through cards: Keep a clear path through the card so heated air can move as the cooler is designed to move it.
- Passive cards: Use a system with an airflow path designed for passive server cooling. Do not assume ordinary case fans make a passive server card a drop-in desktop option.
After assembly, monitor sustained temperatures and system stability while running the target workload. This is how to determine whether the actual combination of cards, spacing, fans, and enclosure is working; no universal fan curve or safe room temperature is established for every build.
For room HVAC planning, base the estimate on whole-system measured or conservatively estimated watts, room conditions, and where the hot exhaust goes. A GPU-only heat calculation is not a complete cooling prescription for the room.
Check the power supply and household installation separately
A suitable power supply must support the complete system load, the required connectors, and transient behavior specified by the GPU, system, and PSU manufacturers. A GPU subtotal is not enough to choose a PSU, and it cannot establish that a household circuit or receptacle is suitable.
Evaluate the proposed installation using the final system input, local voltage, other loads on the circuit, and applicable local electrical requirements. Rules and installation details vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified local professional when needed. The published GPU ratings do not validate a breaker, receptacle, or branch circuit.
