Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by finding out whether you are using more water, paying a higher rate, or dealing with a leak. Compare water use on your bill with the same period last year, check the fixed and usage-based charges, then look for leaks before changing everyday hygiene, cooking, or cleaning routines. Water charges and assistance programs vary by utility, so use your local provider’s rates and rules to judge what will help.
First, find out what changed on the bill
Compare the billed water volume—not just the dollar total—with the same month or billing period last year. A larger bill can reflect more use, a rate change, a longer billing period, or an estimated meter reading. Seasonal lawn watering, a new household member, or a change in occupancy can also explain higher use. If water use rose without a corresponding change in outdoor watering or household routines, check for a leak.

Look for whether the statement combines water and sewer charges, and identify any base or fixed fee and the charge tied to each unit of water. Some utilities use seasonal rates, increasing or decreasing blocks, drought rates, or water budgets, so the same reduction in volume will not produce the same dollar saving everywhere. Ask your utility how it calculates sewer charges and whether the latest reading was actual or estimated. EPA’s guide to understanding a water bill and consumer affordability resources explain what to look for.

Reducing use can lower the variable portion of a bill, but fixed charges generally remain. To estimate a local saving, multiply the volume you expect to avoid by your own usage charge, accounting for any tier or seasonal rate; do not assume the total bill will fall by the same percentage as water use.

Check for leaks before changing essential habits
Look for visible signs
Inspect faucets, showerheads, hose bibs, the areas under sinks, and around water-using appliances for drips, dampness, or puddles. Check toilets too: a leak can run silently and waste water even when there is no obvious puddle. EPA estimates that household leaks waste an average family about 180 gallons a week, or 9,400 gallons a year; this is an EPA estimate, not a prediction for an individual home. See EPA’s WaterSense statistics.
Use the meter to check for ongoing flow
- Turn off water-using fixtures and appliances, and make sure nobody uses water during the test.
- Record the water meter reading.
- Wait about two hours without using water, then read the meter again.
- If the reading changed, investigate further; the change suggests water is flowing somewhere in the home. If you cannot locate or safely repair the leak, contact a qualified plumber.
EPA’s home-maintenance guidance describes this meter check. Follow any instructions specific to your meter or utility if they differ.

Test a toilet for a silent leak
- Add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the toilet tank.
- Wait 10 minutes without flushing.
- Check whether color has appeared in the bowl. If it has, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.
- Flush after the test so the dye does not stain the toilet.
A worn flapper is one common possible cause. Check the toilet’s design and part fit before buying a replacement flapper. If the toilet still runs after a repair, or the problem is beyond a simple fix, get help from a plumber. EPA outlines the dye test and common repair steps in its home-maintenance guidance.
For context, EPA says a family of four with no outdoor water use in winter that uses more than 12,000 gallons (or 1,600 cubic feet) a month in winter may have a serious leak. That is a screening indicator, not a universal threshold; household size and circumstances matter. See EPA’s WaterSense Current.

Repair waste, then consider efficient replacements
Fix a dripping fixture or running toilet before paying to replace a working fixture. When a showerhead, toilet, or faucet aerator does need replacement, look for the WaterSense label. EPA says WaterSense-labeled showerheads, toilets, and faucet aerators are independently certified to use 20 percent less water while performing as well as or better than standard models. The label supports a choice of efficient equipment; it does not guarantee a particular household’s bill savings. Details are on EPA’s WaterSense statistics and facts page.
For an average family, EPA estimates that replacing a showerhead with a WaterSense-labeled model can save more than 2,700 gallons a year. Actual savings depend on the old fixture, usage, and household. Check the current label and product compatibility before buying.

Review outdoor watering if it applies to your home
Outdoor irrigation can be a major source of seasonal use. If you have a lawn or automatic irrigation system, inspect for broken sprinkler heads, overspray, leaks, and watering during rain. Adjust watering to local conditions and plant needs rather than relying on a fixed schedule that runs regardless of weather.
Recommended Free Tools
For a home with automatic irrigation, a WaterSense-labeled controller can schedule watering based on local weather or soil moisture. EPA estimates that replacing a clock-based irrigation controller with a WaterSense-labeled controller can save up to 15,000 gallons annually and reduce irrigation water use by up to 30 percent; these are estimates, not a promise for an individual property. A controller is irrelevant if your home has no automatic irrigation. See EPA’s WaterSense statistics and its WaterSense Current guidance.
Ask the utility about help if the bill is unaffordable
If you still cannot pay after checking use and addressing obvious waste, contact your water provider promptly. Ask whether it offers a payment plan, a Customer Assistance Program, a bill discount, or a special rate structure. EPA says many utilities have assistance programs, but availability and eligibility are local; ask even if you do not see an advertised program. Some utilities also offer leak-repair support or rebates for WaterSense-certified fixtures and appliances. Confirm current terms directly with your provider. EPA’s consumer affordability resources include steps for customers who cannot afford water or sewer bills.
