How to Tell a Sea Cucumber from a Sea Slug or Sea Star

Check the animal’s overall shape first: a sea cucumber is usually a soft, elongated cylinder; a sea star has a central body with radiating arms; and a sea slug often has a distinct head with sensory tentacles. Mouth-end feeding tentacles on a cucumber and tube feet on the underside of a sea star are useful follow-up clues. Color alone is not dependable.

Compare the body plan and visible features

Animal Group Overall shape Head and other visible structures Where to look for feet or tentacles
Sea cucumber Echinoderm Usually elongated and cylindrical, with soft or leathery skin. Feeding tentacles surround the mouth; they are modified tube feet. Small projections or papillae may be visible. Look for small tube feet along the body and feeding tentacles at the mouth end. Feet can be difficult to see in a photograph.
Sea slug Gastropod mollusk Varies, but many familiar forms have a slug-like outline. Often has a distinct head and sensory tentacles. In nudibranchs, sensory tentacles are called rhinophores; some sea slugs also have exposed, feathery gills on the back. Look at the head for sensory tentacles and along the back for exposed gills. These are different from a cucumber’s mouth-end feeding tentacles.
Sea star Echinoderm A central body with radiating arms. No slug-like head with sensory tentacles. Tube feet are on the underside.

The group distinction helps explain why a cucumber may share a feature with a sea star despite looking very different: both are echinoderms and have tube feet. A sea slug belongs to a different animal group, the gastropod mollusks. NOAA Ocean Service explains sea-cucumber classification and feeding, while NOAA describes sea stars’ tube feet.

Use this quick identification checklist

  1. Start with the outline. A central body with arms points to a sea star. A soft, elongated cylinder points to a sea cucumber. A variable slug-like body with a noticeable head points toward a sea slug.
  2. Find the head and sensory structures. A distinct head with sensory tentacles is a useful sea-slug clue. In nudibranchs, those sensory structures are called rhinophores. The Waikīkī Aquarium’s sea-cucumber guide also notes the head as a simple field clue for distinguishing slugs from cucumbers.
  3. Check the back and mouth end. Some sea slugs have exposed, often feathery gills on the back. A cucumber has feeding tentacles around its mouth. Their position matters: mouth-end feeding tentacles are not the same clue as sensory tentacles on a slug’s head.
  4. Look for tube feet in the right place. On a sea star, check the underside. On a sea cucumber, small tube feet may run along the body, though they may not show clearly in a photograph.
  5. Use color and texture only as supporting clues. Cucumbers may have leathery skin, and sea slugs include strikingly colorful forms. Neither color nor softness alone settles the identification.

Why softness or color can mislead

Sea cucumbers and sea slugs can both look soft-bodied, so texture is a weak separator. Their body plans and structures are more informative: the cucumber’s elongated form and mouth tentacles, compared with a slug’s head and sensory tentacles. Sea slugs also vary widely in appearance, and conspicuous color is not exclusive to a particular group. For broader context on sea-slug variation and anatomy, see Ocean Conservancy’s comparison of sea slugs and sea cucumbers.

What you can—and cannot—identify from a quick look

These clues distinguish the broad animal groups; they are not a species-identification key. A particular species cannot be established from this checklist alone, especially without a clear photograph and information about where the animal was seen. If a precise identification matters, consult a regional marine-life guide or local expert. Observe and photograph the animal rather than touching or removing it.
