Start by checking your rate and bill: cut electricity use where practical, shift flexible tasks only if your tariff makes off-peak hours cheaper, and ask your utility about demand-response credits and efficiency rebates.
Why rising demand may not change your bill immediately
Electricity’s wholesale supply costs vary over time, and demand is one influence on those costs. But most U.S. consumers pay rates based on seasonal average costs rather than a live market price; some utilities offer time-of-day pricing. That means higher local demand alone does not tell you whether your next bill will rise or which hours are cheapest. Check your own rate schedule before changing when you use electricity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains how electricity prices are set.

For context—not as a forecast for your household—EIA’s February 2026 preliminary data put the 2025 U.S. annual average retail price at 13.63 cents per kWh across customer types and 17.30 cents per kWh for residential customers. Across all customer types, the 2025 average ranged from 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents per kWh in Hawaii. Your location, customer class, utility, and rate plan determine what you actually pay.
Read your bill before changing your routine
Find the rate name and identify how the bill charges for electricity. A rate may include energy charges based on kWh, a fixed monthly charge, and—in some cases—a demand charge based on your highest power use in a billing interval. Energy rates may vary by time or season. These components respond differently to changes in use: reducing kWh can lower energy charges, while a demand charge may depend on how much power you draw at one peak moment. Using less generally does not erase a fixed monthly charge. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program describes rate components and evaluating utility-rate options.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
- Look for time-of-use or time-of-day periods and the price for each period.
- Check whether your plan includes a demand charge and how the utility measures the billing peak.
- Separate recurring fixed charges from charges that change with your use.
- Review several months of bills; if available, use interval data to see when your household draws electricity.
Do not assume that a time-of-use schedule or demand charge applies just because demand is rising in your area. If your bill does not make the rate structure clear, ask the utility for the applicable rate schedule and an explanation of how each charge is calculated.
Reduce the electricity you use
Efficiency and conservation can reduce energy use and bills, regardless of whether your rate varies by hour. Start with larger household loads and steps that fit your home rather than expecting a particular percentage of savings. EIA’s examples include choosing efficient products, using a programmable thermostat, turning off appliances when they are not needed, and participating in utility efficiency programs. EIA’s efficiency and conservation guide outlines these approaches.

- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Heating and cooling
Heating and cooling are practical places to review settings and schedules. A programmable thermostat may help align operation with when people are home, provided it is compatible with your heating or cooling equipment and the schedule suits the household. A thermostat is a tool, not a guaranteed saving: results depend on the equipment, settings, and how it is used.

Shift flexible use only when the rate rewards it
If your plan charges less during off-peak hours, moving a flexible task such as laundry or dishwashing to that period may reduce the energy portion of your bill. First check the actual hours and price difference, then decide whether the schedule works for your household and the appliance’s instructions. Do not rely on generic claims about “peak hours”: times and prices are set by the local tariff.
Shifting use is different from reducing it. Moving a task may change when you consume electricity without changing how many kWh the task uses. It can help under a time-variable energy rate, but it may not help on a flat rate, and a plan with demand charges may require attention to the highest-use interval as well. A tariff that does not match a household’s usage pattern can cost more; Australian government household guidance likewise advises comparing contract terms with when and how electricity is used.

Ask about demand response and utility incentives
Some utilities offer demand-response programs that ask customers to voluntarily reduce electricity use for a short period, often during grid stress or high wholesale prices. Depending on the local program, participation may earn a discount, bill credit, or other compensation; payment is not guaranteed across programs. Some programs may offer rebates for efficient products or use utility controls for equipment such as cooling or heating systems and water heaters. EIA describes demand-response programs, and DOE defines demand response and explains its use.
Before enrolling, ask the utility:
- Who is eligible, and is a particular meter or equipment required?
- How are event alerts sent, and how much notice is provided?
- What equipment can the utility control, if any, and what permissions are required?
- Can you opt out of an event, and are there penalties or limits?
- How is compensation calculated, and when is it applied?
Compare available plans using your own usage
If your utility or retail market offers more than one rate, compare estimated total bills—not just the advertised per-kWh price. Use your own bills or interval data, and include the peak and off-peak windows, fixed fees, any demand charges, and access requirements such as a smart meter. Consider whether the plan’s timing fits your actual routine and whether you meet any program eligibility or control requirements. DOE recommends reviewing bills and interval data when assessing rate options; local terms determine which plan, if any, is a better fit.
