Start with your statement and ask your carrier to calculate the effect on your total bill—including any device or promotional credits—before changing anything. Eligibility, timing, and savings depend on your account.
Start by finding what changed on your bill
Compare your latest statement with one or two earlier bills. A higher total does not necessarily mean the plan price went up: plan updates, added devices, expired promotions, newly added services, or credits that have not posted can all change the amount due. AT&T recommends reviewing bill details and comparing bills to identify changes (AT&T bill guidance).

Check optional services before cancelling them
Look for add-ons you no longer use, such as protection, extra services, or other recurring features. Ask the carrier whether each item is optional and whether it is already included in your current plan. There is no universal savings amount: the charge and cancellation terms depend on the account.
Before removing a feature, ask whether cancellation affects a promotion or other account credit, and when the change should appear on your next bill. Get the carrier’s estimate of the new total rather than relying only on the listed feature price.

Check discounts available on your existing account
Ask whether your current account qualifies for Auto Pay and paperless billing, an eligible employment or status discount, a Signature discount, or a qualifying bundle discount. These offers have carrier-specific terms; the plan, payment method, and account eligibility can determine whether a discount applies.

These are examples of specific offers, not rules that apply to every plan or customer. Confirm the live terms through your carrier’s account or support channels.

Follow up on missing discounts or credits
If a promotion or expected credit is missing, check its activation date and the offer’s own posting conditions. AT&T says ordinary bill credits usually appear within two billing periods, while wireless offer credits may take three to four billing periods (AT&T bill guidance). If that window has passed, contact the carrier with the offer details and ask it to verify eligibility and the credit status.
Ask what fees mean before disputing them
Ask the carrier to explain unfamiliar line items and identify which are government taxes and which are carrier-imposed fees. Do not assume every surcharge is a tax or that every fee can be removed. Fees and taxes can depend on service and location, and the carrier’s offer terms list recurring AT&T fees separately from government taxes (AT&T offer terms; FCC wireless telephone service glossary).

Make changes safely and verify the new total
- Use a trusted channel. Sign in through your carrier’s official app or website, or call a number already known to be genuine.
- Ask for an account-specific estimate. Have the carrier state the projected recurring total after the change and identify any one-time charges or timing effects.
- Check credits and device payments. Confirm whether removing a feature, changing a payment method, or adjusting an account setting affects a device installment or promotion.
- Keep records. Save bills, offer terms, order confirmations, and support correspondence, then review the next statement to make sure the change or credit appeared as expected.
The FTC warns that an unexpected caller demanding gift-card payment to secure a phone-service discount is a scam. Do not pay; independently contact the provider using a known channel (FTC consumer alert).

If a charge appears unauthorized or the carrier does not resolve a billing dispute through its own process, keep the relevant bills and correspondence and consider filing an informal complaint with the FCC. Its complaint center accepts phone-service issues, including billing (FCC Consumer Complaint Center).
