Turn on Reachability at Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability. Then swipe down from the bottom edge on an iPhone with Face ID, or lightly double-tap the Home button on an iPhone with a Home button. Reachability lowers the top half of the display so you can reach it with your thumb while holding the iPhone in portrait orientation.
Turn on Reachability

Open Settings.

Tap Accessibility, then Touch.

Turn on Reachability.
Lower the screen with the gesture for your iPhone
| Situation | Gesture |
|---|---|
| iPhone with Face ID | Swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen. |
| iPhone with a Home button | Lightly double-tap the Home button. Do not press and hold it. |
| VoiceOver is on | With one finger, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then swipe down without lifting that finger. |
The Face ID gesture starts at the bottom edge, not the middle of the display. Apple describes Reachability as a way to bring the top half of the screen within thumb reach for one-handed use in portrait orientation. Apple’s iPhone User Guide gives the activation steps.

AssistiveTouch is a separate accessibility feature that adapts touchscreen interaction and can provide access to gestures and functions otherwise performed with buttons. You do not need to turn on AssistiveTouch to use Reachability. See Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide.
