In AWS Elemental MediaLive, lower the bitrate in the video output’s Codec settings → Rate control → Bitrate field when the rate-control mode is CBR. Choose a target based on YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test it against your sustained upload capacity. A lower bitrate reduces bandwidth demand, but can reduce picture quality and does not guarantee a stable stream on its own.
How to lower the bitrate in AWS Elemental MediaLive
Make the change on the specific video output that MediaLive sends to YouTube. Confirm the output’s codec, resolution, and frame rate first: those settings determine which YouTube bitrate target applies.

- Open the YouTube-bound video output. Identify the output in the MediaLive channel configuration and verify its codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Open the rate-control settings. In that output’s video Stream settings, expand Codec settings and find Rate control.
- Choose CBR for a predictable ingest rate. With CBR selected, set the Bitrate field to your chosen target. AWS says CBR is the default mode; if its Bitrate field is empty, MediaLive defaults to 5 Mbps. That default is not necessarily suitable for your YouTube resolution or frame rate. See the AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide.
- Apply the change and test the actual output. Use a representative test with typical audio and motion, check available sustained upload bitrate, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before an event and using RTMPS for YouTube Live. Follow YouTube’s live encoder settings for the relevant ingest configuration.
What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. The following values are YouTube Help’s H.264 live-encoding guidance; the page does not show a publication year. “Minimum” is not the same as YouTube’s recommended target. For a different codec, resolution, or frame rate, consult the corresponding row in YouTube’s table rather than extrapolating from these examples.

|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Do not select a value simply because it is lower. A target below YouTube’s recommendation may save bandwidth but leave less room for detail, particularly in complex or fast-moving scenes. AWS notes that “When encoding visually complex video (such as high-motion sports events with brightly dressed crowds in the background), there is always a trade-off between high video quality and low bitrate.” The appropriate compromise depends on both your content and your connection.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
CBR, QVBR, and VBR: which rate-control mode?
The mode affects how the output bitrate behaves. YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding, making it the most direct choice when you want a predictable bitrate for ingest.
| Mode | How bitrate behaves | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| CBR | Uses the configured bitrate target for a more predictable output rate. | When you want a consistent rate aligned with YouTube’s live-encoding recommendation. |
| QVBR | Targets specified or inferred quality and uses the bitrate needed, bounded by the maximum bitrate. The rate can vary frame by frame; it does not maintain an average bitrate. | When quality-based rate allocation suits the workflow. Confirm compatibility with your YouTube ingest setup and observe the actual result. |
| VBR | Uses an average bitrate and a maximum; the bitrate varies with scene complexity, with short peaks possible up to the maximum. | When variable bitrate behavior is useful for content with brief complexity spikes. It is less directly aligned with YouTube’s CBR recommendation. |
For CBR, adjust the Bitrate field. With VBR or QVBR, changing a bitrate-related value does not make the output behave like a fixed-rate CBR stream; check the mode’s controls and the resulting output behavior in the MediaLive User Guide.

How to check whether the lower setting is stable
An encoder bitrate is only one part of the path from MediaLive to YouTube. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, running a pre-event test, and monitoring stream health during the event. Test under conditions that resemble the real program, rather than judging stability from a low-motion clip if the live content has fast action.

- Confirm the bitrate matches the output codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check sustained upload capacity rather than relying only on a brief speed-test peak.
- Test representative audio and motion before the event.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while the output is running.
- Use RTMPS as recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Should you lower resolution or bitrate?
First compare the current output with YouTube’s recommendation for its resolution and frame rate. If you can maintain that target, lowering bitrate may needlessly reduce image quality. If the available sustained upload capacity cannot support the target reliably, reducing resolution or frame rate can make a more appropriate target possible; whichever setting you change, test the resulting output. The choice is a trade-off between bandwidth demand and the detail and motion you want to preserve.

Optional H.264 option: enhanced VQ
AWS offers enhanced VQ as an optional H.264 mode for CBR or QVBR. AWS describes it as a way to improve quality without increasing bitrate, and gives lowering bitrate by perhaps 5% while maintaining the original target quality as one possible use. Treat that as general AWS guidance, not a guaranteed result for a particular channel or scene. AWS also says enhanced VQ can help smooth complex, high-motion transitions. Check the MediaLive User Guide for the applicable settings and verify the output with representative content.
Why is my YouTube stream unstable?
- The configured bitrate exceeds what the path can sustain. Compare the output rate with sustained upload capacity, then test a suitable lower target or adjust the output format.
- The target does not match the output format. Recheck codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use the corresponding YouTube recommendation rather than a target chosen for a different mode.
- The test content was not representative. Run a test with typical audio and motion; complex scenes can make low-bitrate quality limitations more visible.
- The rate-control mode is not behaving as expected. CBR is the direct choice for a predictable rate. VBR and QVBR vary their bitrate, so inspect their controls and the actual YouTube stream-health messages.
