The efficient DMZ habit is simple: enter with a purpose, pick up only items that advance that purpose, and leave while you still have the capacity and survival margin to extract. In the Modern Warfare 4 version of DMZ described by Call of Duty’s October 9, 2026 guide, resources are automatically broken down instead of consuming Stash slots, while distinct 3D Printer ingredients remain in your Backpack during a deployment. Items outside Secure Slots are lost if exfiltration fails, so “one more room” is often a worse trade than an earlier extraction. The mode is scheduled for Early Access on October 20, 2026 for eligible digital pre-purchasers; that date and platform availability may change. Call of Duty’s official FOB guide is the authority for these current-edition mechanics.
Because “DMZ” can also mean the older Warzone 2.0 mode, this guide labels historical mechanics separately. Do not apply old backpack recipes, Shop assumptions, or slot counts to Modern Warfare 4 DMZ without checking the live game.

Start with the version you are actually playing
The name DMZ covers two different systems in the available official material. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is the newer extraction shooter with persistent progression, crafting, objectives, and an open-world deployment loop. Warzone 2.0 DMZ was the earlier mode associated with Shops, valuables, and the backpack variants introduced during 2023.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ’s Early Access is scheduled to begin October 20, 2026 for eligible digital pre-purchasers, subject to change. As of October 16, 2026, that is a scheduled access date rather than a claim that the mode is already live. The instructions below use the newer edition unless a section is explicitly marked historical.

What “efficient looting” means in DMZ
Efficiency is not the number of containers opened. It is the amount of useful progress you convert into a successful extraction for the time and exposure you accepted. A backpack full of low-value objects is inefficient if it prevents a required ingredient from being carried, forces you to abandon a mission item, or tempts you to stay long enough to lose everything.
Use this priority order whenever you enter a deployment:
- Active objective: Items or actions required by the mission you are currently trying to finish.
- Planned craft: Ingredients shown by the 3D Printer for the item you intend to make.
- Station or progression need: Materials needed for an upgrade or other persistent-progress requirement.
- Survival replacement: Ammunition, equipment, or other loadout support that keeps the run viable.
- Everything else: Keep it only when you can explain its next use and still have room for the first four categories.
This order prevents a common mistake: collecting whatever is nearest and discovering later that the backpack is full when the one item that matters appears.

The October 9 official guide describes an eight-slot Basic Pack, stack behavior, backpack-specific slots, Secure Slots on upgraded backpacks, a Stash, and a Loadout. It also makes an important distinction between automatically processed resources and physical crafting ingredients.
| Item or storage type | How it behaves | Looting implication |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Pack | Eight available slots in the described starting configuration. | Every carried discrete item competes for limited space, so pick up against a plan. |
| Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, Metals | These four resource types are automatically broken down and do not use Stash slots. | They can support progression without being managed like individual inventory objects. |
| 3D Printer ingredients | Distinct ingredients remain in the Backpack during a deployment and can be moved to Stash after a successful extraction. | They do consume practical carrying capacity; pin or track only recipes you expect to pursue. |
| Secure Slots | Available on upgraded backpacks; items placed there are treated differently from ordinary backpack contents when exfiltration fails. | Reserve them for irreplaceable mission, crafting, or progression items rather than routine clutter. |
| Stash | The described initial capacity is 40 items plus 12 weapons. | Extraction is the conversion point: sort retained ingredients into Stash before the next deployment. |
The source does not publish a universal efficiency statistic, measured route ranking, or complete item-value list. Treat the slot counts above as the figures stated in the October 9 guide and verify them against the live interface after launch.
Use the 3D Printer as your shopping list
The 3D Printer interface shows recipe requirements and can track pinned items. That turns an unfocused sweep into a targeted collection run.
- Open the 3D Printer before deploying. Identify the recipe, upgrade, or objective you are actually pursuing.
- Read every required ingredient. Separate the four automatically processed resource types from named ingredients that will occupy Backpack space.
- Pin only the short-term target. Tracking every possible recipe creates noise and encourages unnecessary pickups.
- Note likely locations. The interface and the official deep dive can help you associate an ingredient with a broad area, but neither establishes a guaranteed spawn table.
- Set an extraction threshold. Decide in advance whether the run ends when the target is secured, when the Backpack is nearly full, or when a particular objective is complete.
If the item does not appear on the active objective, pinned recipe, planned upgrade, or survival list, it must justify its slot by being immediately useful. “It might be useful later” is not a sufficient reason when a failed exfiltration can erase unsecured contents.

Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 deep dive describes broad supply tendencies in the exclusion zone: police stations are associated with combat and tactical gear, hospitals with scarce medical supplies, and residential districts with crafting materials. These are strategic-location guidelines, not guarantees that a particular item will spawn in a particular building. Read the official Hajin Exclusion Zone deep dive for the stated design context.

For a crafting run
Start near the district that matches the ingredient category shown in your pinned recipe. Search a compact cluster, check your progress, and leave when the recipe requirement is met. Do not cross the whole map for unrelated containers after the objective is complete; the extra exposure buys no guaranteed reward.
For combat or tactical gear
Use police-station areas as a logical first search when your purpose is to replace or improve combat equipment. Keep only gear that solves the loadout problem you entered with. A stronger-looking item that does not improve the current deployment is still a space and time cost.
For medical supplies
Hospitals are the official broad example for scarce medical supplies. Decide the quantity you need before entering. Once the survival requirement is covered, stop searching medical containers and move toward extraction or the next objective.
For general materials
Residential districts are the broad example for crafting materials. Favor short, repeatable sweeps over isolated buildings across dangerous terrain. The aim is a high chance of finding the category you need while keeping a clear route to exfiltration.
Apply a three-question pickup filter
Ask these questions before pressing the pickup button:
1. What exact progress does this make?
Name the mission, recipe, upgrade, or survival need. If you cannot name one, leave the item until the rest of the run is secure.
2. Does it occupy a real slot?
Automatically processed resources and discrete ingredients behave differently. A resource that does not consume Stash slots should not be managed like a named ingredient that remains in the Backpack. Confirm the category in the interface rather than relying on appearance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. What will I drop if I take it?
Every pickup has an opportunity cost. Compare it with the least useful item already carried, then ask whether the replacement is worth the time and exposure needed to obtain it. If the answer is unclear, do not take the new item.

| Situation | Best action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Needed for the active objective | Keep it, and use a Secure Slot when appropriate. | It directly converts into mission progress and is costly to reacquire after a failed exfil. |
| Required by a pinned recipe | Keep it until the recipe is complete or the run is abandoned deliberately. | It has a defined use rather than speculative value. |
| Automatically processed resource | Collect it when convenient without treating it as a normal Stash object. | The current guide says the four named resource types do not use Stash slots. |
| Duplicate or unplanned ingredient | Leave it, discard it, or replace a weaker item only if the new ingredient has a clear near-term use. | Carrying duplicates can crowd out objective items. |
| Unknown item with no visible use | Do not make it the reason to extend the run. | The game does not establish that every object is worth its risk or space. |
Control backpack space during the deployment
- Reserve a slot mentally before searching. If the objective needs one named ingredient, leave capacity for it instead of filling every slot immediately.
- Stack compatible items where the interface allows it. Stack behavior is part of the described backpack system, but exact stack limits can vary by item and must be read in-game.
- Recheck after every major area. Compare carried contents with your pinned target, not with the order in which you found them.
- Discard deliberately. Remove the item with the weakest connection to the current objective, recipe, upgrade, or survival plan.
- Stop when the run has paid for itself. A completed objective plus a safe extraction is a successful deployment; a fuller Backpack is not automatically a better result.
Do not use the Backpack as a museum of possible future needs. The Stash exists for retained ingredients and equipment after a successful extraction, while the deployment pack should contain what the current run can realistically use.
Make extraction part of the loot plan
Exfiltration is not an afterthought. In the current edition, Backpack items outside Secure Slots are lost if exfiltration fails. That makes the value of every unsecured item conditional on getting out alive.
Set a leave-now trigger
Choose one before the first fight: the pinned ingredient is complete, the active objective is done, the Backpack reaches a planned occupancy, or the route to an extraction point becomes unsafe. A precommitted trigger prevents excitement from turning a completed run into an unnecessary loss.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the final route simple
Once the required loot is secured, avoid detours for low-priority containers. Travel toward extraction using the safest practical path, preserving enough equipment and time to respond to rival Operators, AI combatants, or an unexpected fight.
Use Secure Slots for high-consequence items
When an upgraded backpack provides Secure Slots, place items whose loss would force a repeat of a difficult objective or rare crafting search there. Do not waste those slots on common replacements simply because they fit.
Accept an intentional abort when the objective is gone
If the item you needed was discarded, the mission state changed, or the route has become too dangerous, continuing to collect unsecured loot does not repair the failed plan. Treat the deployment as a recovery run and preserve whatever useful progress remains.
Sort the Backpack and Stash after a successful extraction
The FOB guide recommends reviewing whether to keep, sell, discard, or use items for crafting, then moving retained ingredients to Stash. It also describes Stash contents and relevant resources as shared across Active Duty Operators in this edition. Use the following order before launching again:
- Confirm the extraction completed. Do not reorganize on the assumption that an item persisted until the result is recorded.
- Move retained ingredients to Stash. Keep only items connected to a planned recipe, mission, or upgrade.
- Use crafting materials where the recipe is ready. Converting a needed ingredient into progress is better than allowing it to occupy space indefinitely.
- Review duplicates. Keep a quantity that supports the next planned deployment; discard or otherwise process extras when the interface gives you that option.
- Sell only when the current interface and objective make selling useful. Avoid assuming a cash value from an older edition or guide.
- Prepare the next Loadout. Replace what the last deployment consumed and leave room for the next objective’s ingredients.
This reset is where a successful run becomes persistent progression. Skipping it causes the next deployment to begin with yesterday’s clutter and no capacity for today’s target.

Common ways players create junk—and the fix
Opening every container in a high-density area
Problem: Container count feels productive, but it fills the Backpack before the target appears.
Fix: Search a compact route until the target category is satisfied, then extract or move to the next objective. Do not measure success by rooms cleared.
Keeping an item because it is rare-looking
Problem: Rarity without a known mission, recipe, upgrade, or survival use is speculation.
Fix: Check the 3D Printer and objective panels. If there is no near-term use, leave the slot open.
Confusing resources with physical ingredients
Problem: Players either ignore useful resources or carry too many named ingredients.
Fix: Identify whether the item is one of Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, or Metals, or a discrete recipe ingredient. Manage only the latter as a normal space-consuming pickup.
Waiting for one more valuable container
Problem: The marginal loot is unsecured, while the cost of a failed exfiltration applies to the whole ordinary Backpack.
Fix: Use the leave-now trigger you set before deployment. If the target is complete, bank the result.

Applying old DMZ advice to the new mode
Problem: A remembered slot count, backpack recipe, or Shop strategy may belong to Warzone 2.0.
Fix: Verify the label and date of the guide, then trust the current in-game panels and current-edition official documentation.
Historical Warzone 2.0 DMZ: mechanics that should not be imported automatically
The original Warzone 2.0 overview described a Backpack carrying cash, ammunition, weapons, equipment, and valuables; marked extraction points; and Shops where players could sell valuables, weapons, and equipment for cash. Dying removed non-permanent backpack items. Those details belong to that edition’s design. Microsoft’s November 16, 2022 overview documents that historical system.

| Question | Modern Warfare 4 DMZ material | Warzone 2.0 historical material |
|---|---|---|
| What is the central loop? | Loot, craft, complete objectives, and extract rewards in a persistent-progression mode. | Explore, fight AI and rival Operators, collect valuables and gear, use Shops, and exfil. |
| How are resources handled? | Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals are automatically broken down; discrete ingredients remain in the Backpack. | The cited historical guides describe ordinary backpack contents and valuables rather than this exact four-resource distinction. |
| What happens to ordinary carried items after failure? | Items outside Secure Slots are lost if exfiltration fails. | Non-permanent backpack items were lost on death. |
| Which backpack counts apply? | The October 9 guide states an eight-slot Basic Pack and describes Secure Slots on upgraded backpacks. | Season 03 described Secure and Scavenger variants with different historical trade-offs. |
The comparison is for identification, not a recommendation to combine systems. If your game’s menus do not show the Modern Warfare 4 3D Printer, Stash, or resource categories, you may be playing the older edition or a different build.
A practical decision tree for every pickup
- Is it required by the active mission? Keep it and protect it.
- If not, is it pinned in the 3D Printer for the recipe you intend to complete this run? Keep it only while that recipe remains the plan.
- If not, is it a resource handled automatically by the current edition? Collect it when safe, but do not treat it as a named ingredient requiring Stash management.
- If not, does it repair an immediate survival or loadout gap? Take it only if the improvement is clear.
- If none of those answers is yes, can you explain why it deserves a slot more than the next objective item? If not, leave it.
This decision tree is intentionally conservative. Extraction modes reward the loot that survives the trip home, not the loot that looked attractive on the floor.
How to troubleshoot a run that keeps ending with junk
Your Backpack fills before the target appears
Reduce the route to one supply district, reserve at least one slot for the target, and stop picking up unplanned ingredients. Review the pinned recipe before deploying again.

Check that the deployment actually recorded a successful extraction, then look in Stash rather than the active Backpack. Ordinary items are not protected from a failed exfiltration, and only retained contents from a successful deployment should be expected to persist.
You keep losing rare ingredients
Place high-consequence items in available Secure Slots, set an earlier extraction trigger, and stop extending the route after the ingredient is secured. Secure protection does not justify carrying unrelated clutter.
You are using advice that mentions a Shop or Scavenger Backpack
Verify that the advice is for Warzone 2.0. The cited 2022 and 2023 guides document historical systems, while the Modern Warfare 4 guide uses a 3D Printer, Stash, resource processing, and a different starting-pack description.
You cannot tell whether an item matters
Open the objective and 3D Printer interfaces, check whether the item is tracked, and compare it with the current recipe requirements. If the game provides no immediate use, preserve the slot for an item that does.

The short version to remember in a match
- Deploy with one objective, recipe, or upgrade in mind.
- Use the 3D Printer to pin the ingredients that matter now.
- Distinguish automatically processed resources from physical Backpack ingredients.
- Search locations by their broad official role: police stations for combat and tactical gear, hospitals for medical supplies, and residential districts for crafting materials.
- Replace the weakest item whenever capacity becomes tight; do not collect by habit.
- Set a leave-now trigger before the first container.
- Protect high-consequence items in Secure Slots when available.
- After successful extraction, move retained ingredients to Stash and clear the Backpack before the next deployment.
- Ignore historical Warzone 2.0 slot counts and backpack rules unless you are deliberately playing that edition.
