To loosen a stuck bolt without damaging it, first use a correctly sized six-point socket, clear away accessible loose rust, and apply a penetrant according to its label. Then try steady, controlled force. Stop if the bolt head starts to round, the tool slips, or the bolt appears to twist; adding leverage or heat can make the damage worse.
Before you start, assess the risk
Identify what the bolt secures and what could happen if it breaks or the surrounding part is damaged. For a critical vehicle, structural, pressure, fuel-line, or brake-line fastener, use the equipment’s service instructions or a qualified repairer if you do not know the approved procedure.

Loosen the bolt in stages

Choose a tool that fits fully
Use a correctly sized six-point socket or wrench, seated squarely on the fastener. A U.S. Navy fastener chapter recommends a six-point impact socket for stuck fasteners; if you use an impact wrench, the socket must be impact-rated. Keep the tool straight so it does not slip across the bolt’s corners. U.S. Navy, Chapter 075: Fasteners.

Clear loose rust and debris
Brush or otherwise remove loose material where you can reach the joint. WD-40 Company recommends cleaning loose rust before applying its product; follow the directions for whichever penetrant you use. WD-40 Company, Unlock Stubborn Parts with WD-40 Specialist Penetrant.

Apply penetrant and allow it to work
Apply a penetrant to the fastener and accessible threaded joint, then wait for the soak time stated on its label. Repeat only if the product directions permit it. Valvoline, CRC, 3-IN-ONE, and WD-40 describe products intended for stuck or rusted fasteners, but those manufacturer descriptions do not establish that one brand is better than another. Product instructions and material compatibility can differ, so consult the label and safety data sheet (SDS) for the product you have. Try steady force, then inspect
Turn in the loosening direction with the tool fully seated, using smooth, controlled pressure rather than a sudden jerk. CRC describes its penetrant as an option intended to free fasteners without heat or extra force. If the head begins to deform, the tool slips, or the bolt seems to twist, stop instead of increasing force. CRC Industries, Penetrants.

Reassess before escalating
If the bolt remains stuck, check access, corrosion, the part it secures, and the thread direction before trying another method. An impact tool may be appropriate in some situations, but it is not a guarantee of damage-free removal. Follow the tool maker’s instructions. Enerpac’s warnings about loosening limits and shock loading apply to its hydraulic-wrench context; they are not universal torque limits for hand tools. When heat is—and is not—an option
Heat is a context-dependent escalation, not a routine next step. It can harm nearby seals, wiring, paint, fuel or brake components, and other heat-sensitive parts. Do not use an open flame around penetrant vapors or residue. Before considering heat, consult the exact product SDS, ensure its vapors and residue are gone, and verify that heating is permitted for the surrounding assembly.

For CRC Knock’er Loose Penetrant, the U.S. SDS revised December 3, 2021, says: “Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. – No smoking.” That precaution applies to this named aerosol, not automatically to every penetrant. The same SDS calls for ventilation and eye and hand protection. Read the SDS and label for the product you use. CRC Industries, Safety Data Sheet: Knock’er Loose Penetrant – 9 oz.
CRC describes a freeze-shock penetrant for fasteners in no-flame zones. That is an option to assess against the product directions and the specific job, not a general assurance that a product is suitable for every assembly. CRC Industries, Penetrants.

Choose the next step by the job, not by maximum force
- Tool fit: A fully seated six-point socket helps reduce slipping over the corners. Use an impact-rated socket with an impact wrench.
- Access and materials: Choose a penetrant whose label supports the application and nearby materials; follow its soak and safety directions.
- Flame restrictions: If flame is prohibited or flammable material, penetrant vapor, or heat-sensitive components are nearby, do not use an open flame.
- Cost of failure: If a damaged bolt or assembly could create a safety problem, stop and use the service procedure or a qualified repairer rather than escalating by guesswork.
No universal best method or brand winner is established. The right choice depends on tool fit, access, product directions, the surrounding assembly, and the consequences of damaging the fastener.
