Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose the socket opening to fit the fastener, then choose the socket’s square drive to fit your ratchet or powered tool. Those are two different measurements: a 10 mm socket opening, for example, can come with different square drives. For a conventional hex fastener, a 6-point socket is the reliable default; match socket depth to clearance, and use impact-rated sockets and accessories with an impact wrench.
How do you identify the socket size that fits?
Start with the fastener’s profile and the measurement system specified for the equipment. The socket’s working-end opening should fit the nut or bolt head fully, without rocking or excessive looseness. Use the exact metric or SAE size rather than a nearby size that seems close: a loose fit can damage the fastener.

When the correct size is unclear, check the equipment’s service information and verify the fit at the fastener. Modern vehicles largely use metric hardware, while SAE sizes remain relevant on older domestic vehicles and other equipment; neither is a safe assumption for a particular fastener. Let the specified size and actual fit decide.

Socket opening size is not drive size
The socket opening fits the fastener. The square drive is the socket’s connection to a ratchet, extension, or powered tool. A 1/2-inch-drive set can contain sockets with many different openings, and the same opening size may be sold with different square drives. For example, a 10 mm opening does not mean the socket has a 10 mm drive.

Before choosing a socket, check both ends: its opening must fit the fastener, and its square drive must fit the tool or a correctly rated accessory. Drive size alone does not establish a safe torque limit. For tightening, follow the service procedure and use the specified torque value with an appropriate torque wrench when required.
Which square drive should you choose?
Drive-size guidance is about typical access and application, not a universal torque rating. Choose a drive that fits the tool and job, and check the manufacturers’ ratings for the complete setup, including the socket, ratchet, extensions, adapters, and powered tool.

| Square drive | Common application guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | Smaller fasteners and compact access | Useful where a smaller tool profile helps; this is not a torque guarantee. |
| 3/8 inch | Versatile general automotive and maintenance work | A broad-use option, but suitability depends on the tool and job ratings. |
| 1/2 inch | Many larger automotive jobs | Choose it when the tool, socket, and application call for it; drive size alone does not set a safe load. |
| 3/4 inch and 1 inch | Specialized heavy-equipment or industrial work | Use only with compatible tools and manufacturer ratings for the complete setup. |
Should you use a 6-point or 12-point socket?
6-point for standard hex fasteners
A 6-point socket is the sound general choice for a conventional hex head, particularly if the fastener is tight, worn, or subject to higher load. It engages the six sides of the hex profile and is less likely than a 12-point socket to round a seized or low-strength hex fastener.

12-point for positioning or matching profiles
A 12-point socket offers more positions for starting engagement, which can help when the ratchet has little room to swing. Use it when the fastener itself has a 12-point profile, too. On an ordinary hex fastener, that extra positioning convenience can come with more rounding risk when the fastener is seized or made of low-strength material.

When do you need a shallow or deep socket?
Choose the shortest socket that fully seats on the fastener and clears nearby parts. A shallow socket is more compact and may fit where surrounding components limit access. A deep socket is useful when a recessed fastener or an extended stud prevents a shallow socket from engaging fully. Confirm that the socket clears the stud or recess without losing full contact with the fastener.
Can you use a hand socket with an impact wrench?
No. Use impact-rated sockets and impact-rated accessories with an impact wrench. Impact sockets are made for impact use; ordinary hand sockets are not appropriate substitutes under repeated impact loading. Check that extensions, adapters, or other accessories in the setup are also rated for impact use.

How to choose a socket set
Buy for the fasteners and tools you actually need to service, not the largest piece count. Compare the set’s included openings, measurement system, square drive, point style, shallow and deep coverage, and impact rating if you will use it with an impact wrench. Confirm that its drive matches your tool and that the set includes the sizes called for by your equipment.
