How to Loop Short Clips on YouTube Live Without Black Frames

Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to send an ordered, repeating clip playlist to YouTube Live. Learn the key settings, why looping alone cannot guarantee gap-free transitions, and how to test the full stream.

To loop several short clips as a YouTube Live broadcast, build the sequence in OBS with a VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist, and send OBS’s output to YouTube using an encoder stream key. YouTube’s playlist-repeat button loops videos for viewers; it does not turn a playlist into a live broadcast. A loop setting is not a guarantee of gap-free transitions, so test every clip boundary and the incoming YouTube preview before going public.

What you need to loop clips on a live stream

  • OBS Studio to compose and send the live output.
  • VLC media player installed on the same computer if you use OBS’s VLC Video Source. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
  • The short video files you want to play, arranged in the intended order.
  • A YouTube channel and an encoder stream created or selected in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a live stream with an encoder.

Set up a playlist that repeats in OBS

  1. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast, for example, Clip playlist. A scene gives you a place to compose the output that will be sent to YouTube.
  2. In the scene’s Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Give it a clear name and confirm.
  3. In the VLC Video Source properties, add the clips to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Check Loop Playlist. OBS documents that this option is enabled by default and that Shuffle Playlist is off by default; confirm both settings rather than relying on defaults if order matters.
  4. Make sure the source fills the intended output area. Preview the scene and check that the clips are visible and their audio is at the level you want.
  5. Play the full sequence in OBS, including the point where the final clip returns to the first. Inspect each transition for a blank image, unwanted pause, black frame, or audio interruption.

For a single repeating file instead of a multi-clip playlist, add Media Source from the Sources + menu, select the file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS says this restarts the file after playback completes. Use VLC Video Source for a playlist; Media Source is the simpler choice for one file.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover this setup.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use the connection method offered by your OBS version. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  3. Set the output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings in OBS. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than using one bitrate for every stream.
  4. Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview, check picture and sound, and start the public event when the preview and event setup are ready.

YouTube advises creators to test before starting and to monitor stream quality. Run a private or otherwise non-public test appropriate to your setup, then watch the Live Control Room preview and the live output for picture or sound problems. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and streaming tips.

Choose settings for a stable YouTube feed

YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. It also recommends RTMPS. The following are examples from YouTube’s H.264 bitrate table, accessed October 3, 2026; these are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of performance on a particular computer or network.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

Use the row that matches your actual output and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other combinations. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if your encoder or upload connection cannot sustain the corresponding settings.

What prevents black frames—and what does not

Loop tells OBS to restart a single file when it ends; Loop Playlist repeats a list. Neither setting guarantees a frame-perfect, gap-free transition across every media file, codec, frame rate, or clip duration. The official OBS and YouTube guidance does not promise that outcome for all combinations, so the reliable check is to test your actual playlist from beginning to end and inspect the YouTube preview.

Also distinguish a playlist boundary from a source reload. OBS warns that with Close file when inactive enabled, a source can take a short time to appear again after it is shown. Avoid making a source that is unloaded while hidden your only visible picture during a critical transition. A cover scene can conceal a source reload or give you a recovery screen, but it cannot repair a gap within the video files themselves.

YouTube’s consumer playlist repeat control is for playback in YouTube’s player, not for producing an encoder-based live feed. For an OBS live playlist, OBS must play and send the clips continuously to YouTube. See YouTube’s separate explanations of looping videos or playlists in YouTube and streaming with an encoder.

Check clip rights and channel suitability

Looping a clip does not give you permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for your situation before scheduling a long-running broadcast. A playlist made from short clips can still raise rights or reused-content concerns; no particular clip is cleared simply because it is repeated or arranged in OBS. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist is a useful pre-stream prompt, not a substitute for having the necessary rights or checking YouTube’s rules.

Troubleshoot blank frames and interruptions

What you see Likely check What to do
VLC Video Source is missing in OBS VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the Sources + menu.
Clips play once and stop The playlist repeat setting may be off. Open the VLC Video Source properties and check Loop Playlist. For a single Media Source file, enable Loop.
Clips play in an unexpected order Shuffle may be enabled or the list may be arranged incorrectly. Turn off Shuffle Playlist and review the playlist order in the source properties.
A source is briefly absent after being hidden Close file when inactive can cause a reload interval when the source appears again. Do not unload the only picture source during an important transition. Use a cover scene for operational recovery and test the switch.
A black frame or pause appears between clips The transition may depend on the actual media files and their playback behavior; loop controls do not guarantee seamless boundaries. Test the complete sequence in OBS, inspect each boundary, and check the incoming YouTube preview. If the gap is in a clip or its boundary, correct or replace that media rather than expecting a loop checkbox to remove it.
YouTube preview has no picture or sound Check that OBS is sending the intended scene and that the selected stream and key are correct. Verify the stream connection in OBS and Live Control Room, check source visibility and audio meters, then test again before starting the public event.
Stream quality is unstable The selected output settings, encoder load, or upload connection may not sustain the feed. Match codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance; use the preview and stream-health indicators while testing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to remain on for the broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
