How to Loop Recorded Calculus Lectures into a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Use an OBS Media Source for one looping calculus lecture or a VLC playlist for several, then connect YouTube Studio’s encoder stream and test playback before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop recorded calculus lectures on YouTube Live, run OBS Studio on a computer, add the lecture as a looping Media Source—or build a looping VLC playlist—then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key. The computer must stay on and connected while OBS is streaming. Before you begin, confirm that you have the rights to stream every lecture and all of its slides, audio, images, and other embedded material.

What you need before going live

  • A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility rules and encoder setup guidance.
  • OBS Studio, your local lecture files, and a computer with enough capacity to play and encode them while remaining online.
  • VLC installed if you want to use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist. OBS says this source can create a playlist, unlike Media Source; see its Media Sources documentation.
  • A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you choose, with headroom for normal variation.
  • Permission to stream the lectures and every third-party element they contain. Keep a separate archive if you need complete recordings of the broadcast.

Prepare the lectures and clear the rights

Check each file before adding it to OBS. Confirm that the channel may stream the lecture itself and any music, diagrams, slides, images, video clips, or other third-party content included in it. YouTube’s terms place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights on the content provider. If a rights owner licensed material for your channel, ask whether your channel also needs to be added to that owner’s Content ID allowlist.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If detected material remains in the broadcast, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms before you publish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose how the lecture files should repeat

Setup Use it when What repeats Extra requirement
OBS Media Source You want to repeat one lecture file. The selected file restarts when playback ends if Loop is enabled. No VLC dependency for this source.
OBS VLC Video source You want several lectures to play in a chosen order. The playlist starts over when Loop Playlist is enabled. Install VLC; OBS must expose a compatible VLC source.

Set up a single repeating lecture in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene that will show the lecture.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Calculus lecture loop.”
  3. In the source properties, select Local File and browse to the lecture video.
  4. Enable Loop, then confirm the properties.
  5. Check the OBS preview. Confirm the video fits the canvas and that the audio meter responds during playback. If the source is cropped or surrounded by empty space, adjust the source transform to fit or fill the canvas as appropriate.

OBS Media Source loops the selected local file. Keep the file in a stable location while the stream is running; moving or renaming it can break the source.

Build a repeating playlist of lectures

  1. Install VLC if it is not installed, then restart OBS if the VLC Video source is not available.
  2. In OBS, select or create the scene for the lecture feed. In Sources, choose + and select VLC Video Source.
  3. Add the lecture files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Check that the paths point to files that will remain available to the computer.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings so playback returns to the start after the final item.
  5. Confirm the source appears in the OBS preview, then watch at least one transition between files. Check that video and sound both continue and that the next item begins as intended.

If VLC Video Source does not appear, confirm VLC is installed and that OBS can use the installed VLC architecture. OBS’s VLC and media-source notes explain the source distinction and dependency.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, selecting the encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, enter YouTube’s server URL as well. Follow the fields shown by your OBS version.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it on screen, publish it, or send it to anyone who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  5. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming OBS feed to appear in the preview before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast.

YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells an encoder where to send its feed. Its encoder instructions cover creating a stream and connecting an encoder.

Choose encoder settings that fit the lecture

Use the source’s actual resolution and frame rate where practical, and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS include RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval. Bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table rather than applying a generic setting for every lecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As one specific reference point, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. Those figures apply to that listed format, not every resolution, frame rate, or codec. A higher bitrate is not automatically better if your connection cannot maintain it.

Test the stream, then monitor it

  1. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the public broadcast. Use a representative section with similar audio and motion to the lectures, rather than checking only a static opening slide.
  2. Start streaming from OBS and confirm YouTube receives the feed. Inspect the preview and stream-health messages in the Live Control Room.
  3. Open the watch page on a separate device, including a mobile device if that is how students may watch. Confirm that the page is accessible and that picture and sound play correctly.
  4. Listen for clipping, silence, sync problems, or unexpected audio. Check that text and mathematical notation remain legible at the selected output resolution.
  5. During the live run, check OBS playback and YouTube stream health periodically, especially after a file transition and when the playlist returns to its first item.

YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement, checking access and playback, and monitoring stream health and audio/video during the event. See its live-streaming tips.

Plan for replays separately from the 24/7 feed

A continuous live broadcast is not a dependable substitute for individual lecture replays. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That establishes automatic archiving for streams shorter than 12 hours; it does not guarantee a complete archive for a single broadcast that runs longer.

If students need to find or review complete lectures, keep independent source files and publish or preserve the lectures separately. Do not rely on one around-the-clock event archive as the only copy.

Copyright and monetization are separate checks

Having the right to stream a lecture does not by itself establish that a channel will qualify for monetization. YouTube applies monetization policies to livestreams. Its policy describes repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content,” which is ineligible for monetization; educational subject matter alone does not guarantee a particular channel’s review outcome. Copyright rules still apply independently. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common loop and live-stream problems

The VLC Video source is missing

Install VLC and restart OBS. If it still does not appear, check that OBS and VLC are compatible in architecture and that the VLC installation is available to OBS. Use Media Source instead if you only need to repeat one file.

The lecture does not restart

For a single video, reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For multiple videos, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source, then observe the final-to-first transition in a test.

YouTube does not receive the OBS feed

Check that OBS has the correct stream key and server configuration for the stream created in the Live Control Room. Confirm the key belongs to the selected stream and has not been changed. Keep the key private; reset it if it was exposed.

The stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears

Remove or replace material that the channel is not authorized to use. For licensed third-party content, contact the rights owner about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent a live match from affecting the feed.

A long stream has no complete replay

Keep an independent archive and make individual lecture files available separately when complete replays matter. YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a longer continuous broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer at home to run OBS continuously, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload the recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service plays uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
