For a headless, self-managed server that continuously plays music, Debian stable is the strongest default; Ubuntu Server LTS is an equally practical choice if it better fits your experience or hosting environment. That is a recommendation based on documented package availability and support lifecycles, not a claim that Debian has proven better uptime or performance for this workload. First decide what “YouTube music radio” means: a listener-facing internet radio stream, or a continuous YouTube Live broadcast. The software path differs.
Choose the broadcast path before the Linux distribution
A Linux distribution provides the operating system; it does not by itself create, encode, or publish a continuous programme. Plan the path according to where listeners should watch or listen.

- Internet radio for listeners: Liquidsoap can generate and encode the programme stream, then send it to Icecast, which relays it to listeners. See Liquidsoap’s Icecast workflow.
- YouTube Live: Liquidsoap also documents RTMP output to YouTube Live. Icecast is a relay for listeners in the internet-radio arrangement; it is not the component that publishes to YouTube. See the Liquidsoap project overview.
These are different destinations and operating arrangements. Decide which one you need before choosing packages and configuring the service.

For an existing Debian host, Debian stable avoids changing the operating system merely to run this stack. For an operator whose provider, team, or troubleshooting habits are Ubuntu-based, Ubuntu Server LTS is no less defensible. The cited project documentation establishes compatibility, not a controlled reliability or performance ranking between distributions.

Set up a maintainable headless base
- Install the current stable release you intend to maintain. Debian’s release index currently identifies Debian 13 Trixie as stable. Review the Debian release page or Ubuntu lifecycle policy for the release you select, and confirm coverage for the packages you will rely on.
- Use the distribution or upstream package path deliberately. Icecast’s project guidance favors distribution packages where their integration fits the system and identifies
icecast2for Debian and Ubuntu. Liquidsoap documents Debian/Ubuntu builds as well as packages or images for additional distributions. Confirm the installed version and codec/build features against the planned stream rather than assuming every package has identical capabilities. - Keep the server focused on its role. A basic automated audio service does not inherently require a desktop environment or OBS. Add production components only if your planned workflow needs them.
- Document routine maintenance and recovery. Record the OS release, package sources, configuration locations, and the procedure for restoring playback after an update or host failure. The distribution choice cannot substitute for operating and monitoring the stream stack.
Debian’s support page also notes that Debian 12 Bookworm LTS runs through June 30, 2028, and a July 2026 notice encourages upgrading to Debian 13 where possible. If you are maintaining Bookworm, check that support notice and your package coverage before planning a long-lived deployment.
Decide whether OBS belongs in the chain
OBS may be useful when the broadcast includes scenes or other production elements, but it is not a requirement implied by automated audio playback alone. OBS’s published Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and an X or Wayland graphics environment. The OBS project cautions that a compatible system does not guarantee that it can stream or record: capability also depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Those desktop-oriented requirements are not a sizing guide for a headless Liquidsoap/Icecast audio server. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum CPU, RAM, disk, or upload bandwidth for a 24/7 stream. Actual needs depend on encoding, output count and quality, media, and audience.

Debian stable is a practical default for a headless host because its release lifecycle and package paths are documented for the relevant software. Ubuntu Server LTS is a similarly sound choice, with five years of standard security maintenance for Main packages. Neither support policy is a promise that a particular radio stream will stay live: continuity also depends on the host, configuration, network, source media, and operational recovery plan. No cited evidence establishes comparative uptime or performance for these distributions on this specific workload.
