How to Loop Product Demo Videos on YouTube Live with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a prerecorded product demo in a YouTube Live broadcast, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. For multiple demo clips, use the VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube with your stream URL and key, check the preview, and monitor stream health.

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to loop OBS source What to know
One demo file Media Source Built into OBS. Select the file and turn on Loop so it restarts when playback finishes.
Several demo clips VLC Video Requires VLC installed. Add the files to its playlist and use Loop Playlist. Shuffle is off by default, so clips play in list order unless you change it.

These settings control the video OBS sends to YouTube. YouTube’s Loop command is different: it repeats playback for someone watching a YouTube video or playlist, not the local file in your live encoder feed. OBS Media Sources documentation · YouTube’s player-loop instructions.

Prepare the demo and check your rights

  • For a single file, OBS Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Confirm that your file plays correctly before configuring the scene.
  • For a playlist, install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit VLC build so the source can appear in OBS.
  • Confirm you have permission to broadcast the product footage, music, graphics, and any claims shown in the video. A file being playable in OBS does not establish that you have streaming rights to it.

Loop one product demo in OBS

  1. Create or open a scene: In OBS, select an existing scene or create one for the demo.
  2. Add the file: In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local video file in its properties.
  3. Enable the loop: Turn on Loop. OBS describes the setting as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. OBS Media Sources.
  4. Fit the picture: Check the video in the preview. Adjust its size and crop within the scene so the product is framed as intended.
  5. Check sound: Play the file and confirm its audio reaches the intended OBS output. If the demo should be silent, verify that before starting the stream.

OBS’s Restart playback when source becomes active option is on by default. It can affect what happens when you switch scenes and the source becomes active again; check it if scene changes cause the demo to restart unexpectedly.

Loop several clips as a playlist

  1. Install VLC. If the VLC Video source is unavailable in OBS, check that VLC is installed and matches your OBS architecture; OBS documents the 64-bit VLC build for 64-bit OBS.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video.
  3. Add the demo files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
  4. Keep Loop Playlist enabled so playback repeats after the list ends. It is on by default in OBS’s documented source settings.
  5. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence; it is off by default. Check the preview and audio while each clip plays.

For source-specific details, see OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you plan to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube integration if it is available, or enter the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not show it in a screen capture, tutorial, or public post. See YouTube’s live stream settings help and encoder setup instructions.

Set encoder quality and upload capacity

Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually intend to send; one bitrate is not right for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with CBR and up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Use the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

As one specific reference—not a universal preset—YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. The appropriate setting depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the streaming bitrate in its streaming tips. Test from the network you will use for the broadcast; a looped video still needs a stable encoder connection to YouTube.

Preflight, start, and stop the broadcast

  • Check eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • Test representative content: Before the event, run a test with similar motion and audio. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
  • Allow setup time: YouTube’s live-streaming tips suggest setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  • Monitor the live feed: Watch stream health and check that video and audio remain correct, especially when the file loops or the playlist advances.
  • End deliberately: Stop the broadcast in YouTube, then stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current stream behavior and archive settings if planning a longer broadcast.

Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems

The demo plays once and stops

For a single file, reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For multiple clips, check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.

VLC Video is missing from the source menu

Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream

Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream, and that the key was entered correctly. Keep the key private. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements, then inspect the Live Control Room for stream status.

The stream buffers or reports poor health

Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check that the connection has the recommended upload headroom, then test on the broadcast network with representative motion and audio. Reduce the stream load if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings.

The loop works, but the stream is silent or framed incorrectly

Check the source’s audio routing and OBS meters, then inspect the Live Control Room preview. In the scene, correct the source’s fit or crop and run another test before going live.
