First determine whether OBS actually crashed or is still open while the connection drops; those failures need different fixes. Then make local recovery safer, verify YouTube’s live-event behavior, and decide whether keeping a home computer in the loop is the right architecture.
First identify what failed: OBS or the connection
OBS closed or stopped responding
If the OBS process has exited or is unresponsive, this is a process or computer failure. Dropped-frame network adjustments will not reopen OBS. A separate supervisor or operating-system restart policy can be configured to launch OBS again after it exits, but its suitability depends on your operating system, OBS launch setup, and destination-platform workflow.
OBS is open but frames are dropping
When OBS remains open and reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, the issue is more likely the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, or a bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity. OBS says repeated dropped frames can lead to disconnection. Its troubleshooting guide recommends trying another ingest server, lowering bitrate, and checking software and hardware along the network path. OBS Project’s dropped-frames guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a reliability guarantee; measure stable upload and stay within the platform’s limits.
Make a local OBS restart useful, not just automatic
Use a supervisor with a clear recovery boundary
An external supervisor or OS-level restart policy can relaunch OBS after a process exit. That is process recovery, not proof that the encoder has reconnected to YouTube, that the same event is still available, or that viewers experienced no interruption. Avoid copying generic service or scheduled-task recipes without confirming they suit your OS, how OBS is launched, and whether the platform workflow expects a reusable or scheduled live event.

Protect OBS automation access
OBS Studio has included OBS WebSocket by default since version 28. It provides an interface for external control and automation; it is not, by itself, a complete crash watchdog or end-to-end broadcast-recovery system. OBS recommends protecting WebSocket with a password so unauthorized users cannot control the software. See the OBS WebSocket documentation.
Check the destination before relying on unattended recovery
A restarted encoder does not necessarily resume the same live event. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal reconnect window that applies to every event configuration and workflow. Before leaving a kids’ stream unattended, test your actual channel, event type, stream key, and restart procedure, and confirm what viewers see when the encoder disconnects and reconnects. YouTube describes the encoder’s role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Reduce network-related interruptions
Start with the connection and bitrate
- Test a different YouTube ingest server. OBS recommends trying another server when dropped frames point to a connection issue.
- Set bitrate for stable upload, not a best-case speed test. OBS Project’s guide, published September 30, 2024, suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting point; actual stability and YouTube’s limits matter.
- Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be a practical way to connect a nearby streaming computer by wire, but it cannot fix an ISP routing problem, insufficient upload capacity, or an OBS crash.
Check the rest of the network path
OBS identifies security software, VPNs, bundled network utilities, outdated network drivers, routers, modems, and other network hardware as possible contributors. Investigate recent changes and test carefully rather than disabling security protections permanently. If OBS’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, its guidance is to contact your internet service provider.
Keep YouTube’s live and kids-content settings accurate
YouTube requires creators to set an audience for live streams. If the content is Made for Kids, set that designation accurately in YouTube Studio; YouTube says it restricts features including live chat and notifications. Do not change the audience setting to preserve features. After a restart, verify the live workflow and audience configuration for the event you are actually using. YouTube Help also says live-streaming access requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and that the person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. The age rule concerns the operator, not the audience. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.
Choose where recovery should happen
These approaches have different dependencies. The available guidance does not establish comparable uptime, recovery guarantees, or total costs for them, so evaluate the actual platform workflow and any provider’s terms before relying on one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does restarting OBS guarantee viewers will see the same YouTube broadcast?
No. A process relaunch does not establish that YouTube will resume the same live event. Test the specific event configuration and reconnect workflow on your channel.
Can OBS WebSocket restart OBS after a crash on its own?
OBS WebSocket provides external control and automation, but is not itself a complete crash watchdog. A separate supervisor or OS restart policy is needed to relaunch a process.
