You can loop prerecorded video on a YouTube livestream with OBS, but OBS does not promise a gapless handoff between separate playlist files. For one video, use an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For multiple videos, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; install VLC first. If the boundary must be seamless, test the exact video files and setup in a private or unlisted stream before going public.
Choose the right looping setup
| Setup | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | Repeating one video, or one preassembled sequence | Simple to configure; test the file’s end-to-start join. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Repeating several separate files | Convenient playlist control, but no official zero-gap promise at file boundaries. VLC must be installed. |
| StreamNeo cloud streaming | Running uploaded videos on YouTube without keeping a local computer on | Always-on from the cloud, any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. |
Set up a YouTube Live stream in OBS
1. Enable livestreaming on your channel
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.

2. Create the looping source
- For one file: In OBS, create or select a scene, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, then enable Loop in the source settings.
- For multiple files: Install VLC on the same computer, then add a VLC Video source in OBS. Add the files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that the VLC source requires VLC; with 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
OBS documents these repeat-playback controls in its Media Sources guide. The playlist loop restarts playback after the list is exhausted; it does not establish that each change from one file to another is gapless.
3. Connect OBS to the YouTube event
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your event. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.

4. Set output and encoder values
Match OBS’s resolution and frame rate to your source and the upload capacity available to the streaming computer. Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS; it lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Avoid choosing a bitrate that your connection cannot sustain reliably.
5. Test and monitor the stream
Run a private or unlisted test using the actual files and representative motion and audio. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, and listen and watch through file boundaries as well as during ordinary playback. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the broadcast while it runs; its live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

What “without a gap” can—and cannot—mean
Looping means playback repeats; it does not necessarily mean a seamless transition. OBS documents looping a single Media Source and repeating a VLC playlist, but its documentation does not guarantee zero-gap transitions between distinct files. A 2020 OBS forum discussion reported a brief pause when repeating a clip in a VLC playlist and no pause with a single-file Media Source loop in that user’s setup. That is one user’s report, not a guarantee across codecs, hardware, or software versions: OBS forum discussion of seamless clip repetition.

- Test the exact source encodes and playlist order, not just a short sample from a different file.
- Watch and listen to the transition in a private or unlisted broadcast; a clean-looking video cut may still have an audio pause or click.
- If transitions between clips must be continuous, assemble the sequence into one file and loop that file. This removes handoffs between separate playlist items, but the file’s end-to-start join still needs testing.
These are practical production approaches, not an OBS guarantee of gapless playback.

Keep the broadcast running reliably
Local computer and connection
With OBS, the computer running the encoder and its internet connection must remain available for the broadcast. A shutdown, loss of connectivity, or encoder failure can interrupt the feed. Test the system for the intended run and monitor it rather than assuming that a successful short test proves a long broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
YouTube event and archive considerations
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream well before the event, starting the encoder before the scheduled start, confirming the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. If you rely on YouTube’s archive, its encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer-running broadcasts, plan around that stated limit and verify YouTube’s current behavior rather than assuming an archive will be available: YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Copyright and channel eligibility
Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A looping format does not make copyrighted material permissible or guarantee that a channel will avoid restrictions. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming rules for your content before broadcasting, and confirm that your channel meets the live-streaming eligibility requirements.
