How to Loop Pre-Recorded Videos on YouTube with FFmpeg on Compute Engine

Use FFmpeg’s infinite input loop on a Compute Engine VM to send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, with guidance on RTMPS, encoder settings, testing, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream from a Compute Engine VM, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file and -re before that input so it is read at native frame rate. Send the output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, preferably using the RTMPS URL when supported. The loop runs only while the VM and FFmpeg process remain running; this guide covers setup, testing, recovery, and the limits to plan for.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance includes channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum-age requirement. Check the current eligibility rules for your account and location.
  • A prerecorded video file accessible from the VM, with audio and video streams suitable for YouTube ingest.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VM and a Compute Engine instance with enough CPU capacity for the chosen output method and enough network capacity for the stream.
  • The stream URL and key for the broadcast from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Reset it if it is exposed.

This guide does not prescribe a Compute Engine machine type, region, or cost: those depend on the file, whether it must be re-encoded, outbound bitrate, and runtime. Check current Google Cloud offerings and pricing before choosing an instance.

Prepare the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event or encoder stream you intend to use.
  2. Open the stream’s encoder settings and copy its server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL shown for that stream if supported; do not substitute a generic endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP and explains where to reveal its URL in its RTMPS instructions. The encoder setup guide explains the server and key fields.
  3. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source-control repositories. Prefer a protected secret or restricted configuration file on the VM, and limit who can access it.

Choose whether FFmpeg should copy or re-encode

Copy compatible streams

If the file’s video and audio codecs, pixel format, resolution, frame rate, and other stream properties already meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements, stream-copying avoids a new encode and uses less CPU. The -c copy option copies streams; it does not make an incompatible file compatible. Test the actual file and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages before relying on this mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Re-encode when needed

If the source is incompatible or you need a different output resolution, codec, bitrate, or keyframe interval, configure an encoder rather than using -c copy. Re-encoding consumes more VM CPU, so machine sizing depends on the chosen settings and source. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, and AAC or MP3 for audio; confirm the current supported combinations and settings in the YouTube encoder settings page.

For YouTube’s 720p at 30 fps figures, the current help table retrieved in October 2026 lists 2 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps maximum for its standard codec range; for H.265/AV1 it lists 3 Mbps recommended and 8 Mbps maximum. These are YouTube’s recommendations and maxima for the stated resolution, frame rate, and codec categories—not universal values for every stream. Consult the linked table for other resolutions and codec-specific ranges, which can change.

Run an infinite loop with FFmpeg

On the VM, make the video available at a known path, then use a command shaped like this. Replace the placeholders with the actual file path and the server URL and key copied from Live Control Room:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

The ordering is important: -re and -stream_loop -1 are input options and must appear before the -i input they apply to. FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping; -re reads file input at native frame rate, which is appropriate when sending a file at live pace. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The example uses stream copy and an FLV output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest. Use the exact RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube. If your source requires transcoding, replace -c copy with explicit video and audio encoder options that match YouTube’s current requirements; there is no single correct encode command for every source. Do not paste a real stream key into a shared terminal session or a command history that others can read.

Check the input and command behavior

  • Confirm the path exists and that the file contains the expected audio and video. A file with no audio stream may produce silence; a mismatched or unsupported stream may fail at ingest.
  • Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, encoding errors, or repeated reconnects. A process that exits is no longer streaming.
  • For RTMPS connection trouble, verify you copied the RTMPS server URL for this stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes that the correct rtmps host matters and that port 443 may be necessary in some cases. Follow the endpoint and instructions provided in YouTube’s RTMPS help.

Set YouTube-compatible output and network capacity

  • Ingest protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingestion protocols and recommends constant-bitrate encoding. Prefer RTMPS when supported.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Codec and bitrate: Match the current YouTube table for the output resolution, frame rate, and codec. Avoid treating one bitrate as appropriate for all formats.
  • Network headroom: YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth room. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee; available throughput can vary. For a VM, check that its network path can sustain the output bitrate as well as the expected operational conditions.
  • Test before public launch: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before a scheduled event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Those are YouTube’s timing recommendations, not a promise of uninterrupted service.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings table and streaming tips for the current details.

Test the stream and keep it running

  1. Start FFmpeg while the YouTube event is in preview or otherwise not yet public.
  2. In Live Control Room, check the preview picture and sound, stream-health messages, and whether the received resolution and frame rate match your intended output.
  3. Listen for audio clipping, silence, or sync problems; watch for black frames or discontinuities at the point where the video loops.
  4. Confirm the broadcast is set to the intended visibility and event schedule before making it public.
  5. Keep the VM, network connection, and FFmpeg process running. A shell session closing, a VM restart, a process crash, or a cloud interruption can stop the broadcast unless you have configured process supervision and recovery.

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours according to its encoder setup guidance; this archive rule is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or indefinite availability. Plan separately for longer broadcasts and any recording you need to retain.

Copyright, permissions, and channel policy

Having a video file does not by itself grant the right to broadcast its music, footage, or other included material. Obtain the permissions or licences needed for a public live broadcast, including rights to any music and third-party clips. A stream can be interrupted or restricted if it triggers a rights claim or violates YouTube rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeated or prerecorded programming should also offer genuine value and comply with YouTube’s monetization and channel policies. Replaying material does not make it original, and permission to use content does not automatically establish eligibility for monetization. Review the current rules that apply to your channel and content before streaming; the copyright safety checklist can help you check common rights questions.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube receives no signal Wrong URL or key, an unavailable endpoint, or FFmpeg failing before connection. Copy the server URL and key again from the correct Live Control Room stream, confirm the RTMPS endpoint, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
RTMPS connection fails Incorrect RTMPS host or a network path that cannot reach the required port. Use the stream-specific URL from Live Control Room. Check YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting steps, including its guidance about port 443 where necessary.
Video or audio is missing, rejected, or malformed The file’s streams or copied codecs do not match the intended output or YouTube ingest requirements. Inspect the source streams and compare them with YouTube’s current codec and setting guidance. Re-encode with compatible settings if stream copy is unsuitable.
Stream health degrades or frames drop Insufficient or variable outbound capacity, excessive output bitrate, or VM resource pressure during transcoding. Check the actual output bitrate and VM/network capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. If re-encoding, check CPU load and lower the output requirements or choose suitable capacity.
Broadcast stops when you disconnect FFmpeg was attached to a session that ended, the process exited, or the VM stopped or restarted. Run FFmpeg under a process manager or service configured to start on boot and restart on failure, and ensure the VM itself is not scheduled to stop. Verify recovery with a controlled test; a restart policy does not prevent every source of interruption.
Loop has a visible or audible jump The end and beginning of the source do not join cleanly, or the file’s streams do not align for seamless repetition. Edit or choose a source with a clean loop point, then check the join in preview before public streaming.

Cost and operational trade-offs

Compute Engine cost depends on machine type, region, storage, network egress, and how long the VM runs; transcoding may require more CPU capacity than stream-copying. No single instance size or price is established here, so use current Google Cloud pricing for your specific configuration and estimate the full runtime rather than only the initial test. The upload-time calculator and cloud vs PC cost calculator may help with planning, but neither substitutes for a current cloud quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the FFmpeg loop run forever if the Compute Engine VM shuts down?

No. Infinite looping repeats the input while FFmpeg and the VM are running; it does not keep the VM alive.

Can this setup broadcast a camera live?

This workflow is for a prerecorded file. It does not turn a prerecorded-video loop into a camera broadcast.
