To repeat one podcast episode in OBS, add a Media Source and enable Loop. To play several local episodes in sequence, add a VLC Video source, arrange the files in its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Choose the right OBS source

A loop repeats playback inside OBS; it does not keep your computer, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube broadcast running unattended.

Set up a single podcast episode
- In OBS, select or create the scene that should contain the episode.
- In the Sources panel, choose + > Media Source, give the source a name, and select the local episode file.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source. Media Source’s documented default for restarting playback when it becomes active is on. If you do not want playback to restart after a scene change, review the source’s restart behavior.
- Check that the episode’s audio is audible in OBS and that the scene displays the intended video or still image.
Set up a playlist of episodes
- Install VLC if it is not installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
- In OBS, select the scene for the podcast, then choose + > VLC Video in the Sources panel.
- Add the local episode files to the source playlist in the order you want them to play. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; OBS documents it as off by default.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the playlist finishes. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but check it rather than relying on the default.
- Choose the source’s Visibility Behaviour to match your scene workflow. OBS’s listed default stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. Other options include pausing and resuming, or continuing to play while hidden.
- Test the end of the sequence if practical: confirm that the next episode starts and that the playlist returns to the beginning when all files finish.
For a repeatable episode order, do not confuse Loop Playlist with shuffle: looping repeats the sequence, while shuffle changes its order. If you keep a large local collection, an external SSD is an optional way to store files; OBS does not require one.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow in its encoder live-stream guide.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding OBS stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and follow the on-screen steps to go live, particularly for a scheduled stream.
- Check the public or intended watch page, listen for clean audio, and monitor the broadcast after it starts. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend previewing and monitoring the stream; if you also record locally, check that archive file.
Understand looping, uptime, and YouTube archives
OBS looping only repeats the media source. A power cut, computer sleep, network failure, OBS error, or interruption at YouTube can still stop the live broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The cited YouTube archive guidance does not state a publication year. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce one complete replay. If you need a copy, keep a local recording and check the resulting file.

Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- An episode is missing or will not play: Check that the file still exists at the path saved in the source and that the playlist points to the intended local files.
- Playback starts over after changing scenes: Review Visibility Behaviour and restart behavior. Use pause/resume or continue-while-hidden behavior if that better fits your scene changes.
- The playlist order changes: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence.
- The playlist stops after the last episode: Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- YouTube does not show the stream: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the selected YouTube encoder stream, that OBS is actively sending, and that the Live Control Room preview has arrived. Follow YouTube’s prompts to start the scheduled or current broadcast.
- The broadcast ends or the archive is incomplete: A looping source cannot prevent an encoder, computer, network, or platform interruption. YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours; use a local recording if you need a separate copy.
Keep podcast rights and channel rules in view
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to every episode, music track, clip, image, and other media in the playlist. A loop setting does not grant permission to rebroadcast content. YouTube’s live streaming tips also cover stream preparation and monitoring. Review YouTube’s current requirements for your channel and content, especially if you plan to reuse or repeatedly broadcast material.
