OBS Replay Buffer lets you save a short clip of the moments immediately before you press a hotkey. It does not keep a 24/7 stream online and is not a dependable full-show archive. To use it during an Indian music broadcast, enable it in Settings > Output, assign Save Replay Buffer in Settings > Hotkeys, choose a local save location, and test it while streaming. Separately, verify that you have the rights to broadcast the music and plan another capture method if you need the complete programme.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
Replay Buffer continuously keeps a recent portion of your video in memory so you can save that segment on demand. When you activate the save hotkey, OBS writes the buffered segment as a local clip. Its purpose is to capture something that just happened, not to host or sustain the YouTube broadcast.

- It is for recent clips: the buffer duration determines how much recent material is available when you save.
- It is not a full-stream archive: a saved replay covers only the buffered segment. If you also record continuously, treat that recording as a separate file and retention plan.
- It uses the broadcast computer: test the buffer together with your actual stream and other recording settings; encoding and recording can add system load.
Enable Replay Buffer and assign its hotkey
- Open OBS Settings > Output. Enable Replay Buffer. Choose a duration that covers the kind of moment you want to save, then test on your computer. OBS does not specify a universal duration, and a longer buffer is not automatically the right choice for every system.
- Open Settings > Hotkeys. Find Save Replay Buffer and assign a key combination that is unlikely to conflict with your other controls. OBS also documents hotkeys for starting and stopping the buffer; use the controls appropriate to your workflow.
- Choose where the clips will go. Set and verify a local recording path in OBS, and check available space on that drive. A local SSD is one possible storage choice, not a required OBS component. Estimate capacity from your own output settings and how long you intend to retain files.
- Start the buffer and test the save action. During a private or unlisted test stream, trigger the hotkey, then confirm that OBS creates a file in the expected location and that it contains the intended recent segment.
For standard continuous recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. That guidance concerns standard recordings; do not assume every Replay Buffer setup behaves identically. If you need both instant replay clips and a full local archive, configure and verify them as distinct needs.

Choose settings by testing your actual stream
There is no responsible universal recommendation here for buffer duration, resolution, bitrate, encoder, or storage size: the right choices depend on the computer, connection, desired clip length, and retention plan. OBS notes that recording quality options other than Same as stream, or using a separate encoder, can consume additional system resources. YouTube likewise advises creators to test and monitor stream quality, which depends on the internet connection.

- Clip length: decide how far back you need to capture, then confirm the saved clip covers that interval.
- System load: monitor encoder load and dropped frames while the buffer, stream, and any recording are running together.
- Storage: check that files are actually being created and that the destination has space for your planned retention.
- Audio and video: listen to the saved clip and inspect its picture, not only the live preview; verify the stream’s audio routing too.
- Upload reliability: test at the intended stream settings and watch YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a setting will work on every connection.
Do not rely on YouTube for a 24/7 archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete recording. If preserving the full show matters, use a separate local archive or another capture arrangement and verify that it is recording and retaining the files as intended.
Confirm music rights before broadcasting
YouTube requires the necessary rights for music used in live content. Its livestream terms say creators must have rights for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match that remains can lead to interruption or termination. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner through Content ID where applicable.

For Indian music, the sources establish YouTube’s platform requirements but do not determine which permissions a specific channel needs for a particular catalogue, territory, archive, or broadcast duration. Confirm live-stream, archive, and territory rights with the relevant rights owners or qualified counsel. If you use YouTube Audio Library music or sound effects, check the individual track’s terms and intended live use; tracks under Creative Commons licenses that require attribution need the specified credit in the video description.

Test before going live, then monitor
- Check channel and stream eligibility. Confirm the channel can go live and that the correct YouTube stream is configured.
- Preview the encoder output. Verify the scene, picture, audio routing, and selected stream settings before the public broadcast.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start OBS streaming and Replay Buffer together, save a replay, and inspect the resulting clip and file location.
- Watch stream health during the broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s status and OBS for dropped frames, encoder strain, and audio or video problems.
- Verify any full-show recording separately. Do not infer that Replay Buffer or YouTube’s automatic archive is preserving the entire 24/7 programme.
Troubleshooting common Replay Buffer problems
