To loop one prerecorded video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop in its properties. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then check the Live Control Room preview before you go live.
Choose the right OBS source

For a single file, Media Source is the simplest choice. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Its Media Sources documentation describes Loop as restarting the file after playback completes; it does not promise a gapless transition at the repeat point.

Set up the video loop in OBS
- Open the scene you intend to stream. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted. Select OK, then choose Browse in the properties window and select the video file on your computer.
- Enable Loop, then select OK. OBS will restart the file when playback completes.
- Check Restart playback when source becomes active if you want playback to restart when the source becomes visible in the current scene. This is separate from Loop; it can affect playback if you switch scenes and later return.
- Preview the scene and listen to the audio. Confirm the video is visible, correctly framed, and playing as intended before connecting to YouTube.
Looping restarts the file; it does not by itself make the edit between the end and beginning seamless. That depends on the video and playback behavior.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open its Live Control Room settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the URL and key in the corresponding fields. Interface labels may change over time.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. For a scheduled event, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, and then select Go live.
YouTube requires channel verification for livestreaming, and says the channel must not have livestreaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until broadcast time. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for current eligibility and setup details.

Test the stream and protect its quality
- Run a test before the scheduled broadcast. Check both the OBS preview and the incoming YouTube preview, then verify audio and video during the stream.
- Leave upload bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth available than the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation; actual performance depends on the connection and stream conditions. See YouTube’s network guidance.
- Use a video you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast is still subject to copyright rules; permission to keep a copy of a video does not necessarily include permission to rebroadcast it.
- Consider how the broadcast will be archived. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an exceptionally long continuous stream will be archived in full. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current details.
Troubleshoot common loop and livestream problems
The video plays once and stops
Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled on the source that is actually in the live scene. If using VLC Video for a playlist instead, check Loop Playlist.
The video restarts when I return to a scene
Check Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS documents that this restarts playback when the source is visible in the current scene. Disable it if you do not want scene reactivation to restart the file.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm OBS has the correct stream URL and key from the intended YouTube encoder stream, and that OBS is streaming. If livestreaming has not previously been enabled, activation may take up to 24 hours; also check channel verification and any restrictions.

The stream connects but the picture or sound is wrong
Check the OBS scene preview, confirm the intended source is visible, and inspect audio meters and playback. Test again while watching the incoming YouTube preview before selecting Go live.

The connection drops or becomes unstable
Check available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the connection before the event and monitor the stream while it runs.
A VLC playlist will not load
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS’s documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For just one file, use Media Source instead.
