Choose the right OBS source

OBS describes Media Sources as sources for local media files and VLC Video as a source that can play playlists of audio and video files. The official OBS Sources Guide explains how sources belong to scenes.

Loop a single audio file with Media Source
- Open the scene that will carry the nature audio.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, then confirm.
- In the source properties, choose the local audio file.
- Turn on Loop, then select OK. OBS defines this setting as making the file play again after playback completes.
- With the scene active, check the audio meter in the OBS mixer while the recording plays. Before going live, confirm that this source is routed to the stream’s audio mix.
The OBS Media Sources documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio types. That list describes documented types; it does not guarantee that every encoding or file will work on every system. If a file fails to play, try another supported format and confirm the file itself plays normally.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC Media Player if it is not already installed.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the nature recordings to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the playlist reaches its end.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence, or turn it on for randomized order.
- Confirm the source is audible in the OBS mixer and included in the stream’s audio mix.
Despite its name, VLC Video is not limited to video: OBS documents it for video and other media files, including audio playlists. OBS also notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For the full source options, see OBS Media Sources.

Set playback behavior when a source is hidden
Visibility matters when a source may be hidden, such as when switching scenes. For a VLC source, choose the behavior that suits the scene:
- Stop when not visible, restart when visible: playback stops while hidden and starts again when the source returns.
- Pause when not visible, resume when visible: playback pauses while hidden and continues from that point when shown again.
- Always play, even when hidden: playback continues whether or not the source is visible.
A single-file Media Source has a separate Close file when inactive option. OBS says it unloads the file when the source is hidden or not on the current scene, which may cause a short delay when it loads again. This is not the loop control: enable Loop separately to repeat the file.

Check the recording’s rights before streaming
OBS playback support does not establish that a nature recording is cleared for broadcast. Check the license for the specific recording and the platform’s terms before using it in a stream, especially if you plan to monetize the channel. The OBS documentation does not determine the rights for a particular recording.
What “nonstop” means in OBS
Loop and playlist settings describe how OBS repeats media; they are not a reliability guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast. Keep the audio source in the active scene, check its mixer meter, and verify the stream’s audio routing before going live. The cited OBS documentation does not promise uninterrupted operation under all conditions.

Troubleshooting playback
- The file plays once and stops: For one file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For several files, use Loop Playlist on the VLC source.
- The playlist will not load: Confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- The audio stops after switching scenes: Review the VLC source’s hidden-source behavior, or check whether the source is active in the current scene. For Media Source, review Close file when inactive.
- The audio is playing but not reaching the stream: Check the OBS mixer meter and the source’s audio routing before going live.
- A supported file type does not play: The listed formats are documented types, not a guarantee for every encoding. Check that the file plays outside OBS and try a different supported format if needed.
