How to Loop a Single Video Continuously on YouTube Live

To broadcast one video repeatedly as a YouTube live stream, use an encoder that supports source looping. YouTube’s built-in Loop control is only for regular watch-page playback.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Studio Live Control Room does not have a documented setting to loop a single video. To broadcast a repeating video as a live stream, send it through an encoder that supports repeating the source, connect that encoder to your YouTube stream, and check the preview before going live. YouTube’s built-in Loop control repeats playback for viewers on a regular watch page; it does not turn a video into a live broadcast.

Choose the right kind of loop

Approach What repeats Where it applies Key point
YouTube’s Loop control Playback for the viewer A regular video or playlist watch page It does not create or control a Live Control Room broadcast.
Encoder-based live feed The source sent by the encoder, if it supports repeating that source YouTube Live Confirm the encoder’s loop capability and test the feed before broadcasting.

Repeat playback for yourself or a viewer

On a computer, open the video on YouTube and right-click inside the player, then select Loop. For a playlist, expand the playlist and activate its Loop control. These instructions apply to watch-page playback, not the Live Control Room.

Broadcast a repeating video as live

YouTube’s documented live workflow uses an encoder—software or hardware that sends a feed to YouTube. The reviewed YouTube guidance explains how to connect and monitor an encoder, but does not confirm that a particular encoder can continuously repeat one video. Check the encoder’s current documentation for that specific feature.

Set up a repeating-video live stream

  1. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to find the stream URL and stream key. Configure the encoder with those details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  2. Configure the source repeat in the encoder. Select the video and enable the encoder’s repeat or loop option, if available. The name and location of the setting vary by encoder; verify the current instructions for the software or hardware you use. If it cannot repeat the source, it will not provide the continuous loop this workflow needs.
  3. Choose stream settings that fit the source and connection. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in the encoder. Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Your upload connection needs to sustain the selected bitrate reliably.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then check that the video and audio are present and that the repeated source behaves as intended. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring audio and video quality before and during the broadcast.
  5. Start the broadcast and monitor it. Select Go live only after checking the preview. During the event, keep an eye on stream health and confirm that both audio and video continue.

Settings and limits to check before going live

Bitrate, resolution, and frame rate

Match the encoder’s settings to the YouTube guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, rather than copying an isolated bitrate number. A connection that cannot maintain the selected bitrate can lead to poor or interrupted delivery. YouTube also documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion; choosing a protocol does not add a loop function. YouTube’s HLS guidance notes higher latency than RTMP and sets out HLS setup requirements, so use its HLS instructions if you choose that ingest method.

Long broadcasts, DVR, and archives

Viewer DVR and source looping are separate features: DVR allows viewers to pause or rewind a live stream where available; it does not make the broadcaster’s video repeat. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Its encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. These statements do not guarantee DVR or an archive for every longer broadcast, so check YouTube’s current guidance when planning a long stream.

Copyright and live-stream eligibility

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to the video and any music or other material it contains, and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright rules. A video that can be uploaded is not automatically cleared for continuous live use. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and live-streaming restrictions for your content and account.

Common problems and fixes

  • The video repeats on YouTube’s watch page, but there is no live broadcast. The viewer-side Loop control only repeats ordinary playback. Set up an encoder feed in Live Control Room to broadcast a video live.
  • The live stream starts but the video plays only once. The encoder may not have a repeat option enabled, or may not support repeating that source. Check its current documentation and test the repeated feed before going live.
  • The Live Control Room preview does not appear. Confirm that the encoder is running and that its stream URL and key match the selected YouTube stream. Keep the key private.
  • The preview has unstable video or audio. Check stream health, confirm the encoder’s settings match YouTube’s guidance, and ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Test again before starting the event.
  • Viewers cannot rewind a long broadcast, or no archive appears as expected. DVR and archiving have duration-related limits; neither is the same as looping. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the stream’s planned length.
