Playwright Test can save reference screenshots on the first run and compare later runs against them. It does not discover every route for you: route inventory, authentication, test data, and state setup are your responsibility.
What “every route” means in a visual regression test
A screenshot test only covers the page the test actually reaches, at the viewport and application state it creates. A URL list alone does not cover every meaningful variation: a page may look different when signed in, after opening a menu, or at mobile width. Decide what counts as coverage before writing the test.

- Routes: known paths and, where relevant, representative parameterized paths.
- Viewports: the desktop, tablet, or mobile dimensions that matter to your users.
- States: meaningful differences such as signed-in versus signed-out, empty versus populated data, or a required interactive state.
Keep screenshot checks distinct from broader functional coverage claims. A passing image comparison says that the specific route, viewport, and state reached by the test matched its reference within the configured comparison rules; it does not prove that every possible state of that route was tested.

Build and maintain an explicit route manifest
Use the application’s route configuration as the primary source of known routes where possible. Normalize and deduplicate entries according to the app’s URL rules: decide whether trailing slashes are equivalent, whether query strings identify distinct pages, and how locale prefixes should be handled. Exclude routes that are intentionally inaccessible from this suite or that require a separate authenticated fixture.
#1 Best Overall
For a public static site, sitemap URLs and a same-origin link crawl can supplement the route configuration. They are not complete inventories by themselves: a sitemap or crawl can miss unlinked, authenticated, parameterized, or client-only routes. Keep crawl scope explicit and verify the resulting list against the application’s expected routes.
Example manifest, saved as visual-routes.json:
[{"name":"home","path":"/"},{"name":"pricing","path":"/pricing"},{"name":"docs","path":"/docs"}]
Names should be stable and unique because they help produce predictable snapshot filenames. Add a distinct test case for each route variant you intend to cover; do not silently drop query parameters or locale segments if they change the rendered page.
Run route screenshots with Playwright Test
Install Playwright Test in the project and install the browser used by the suite. The following example assumes the site is running locally at http://127.0.0.1:3000, the manifest is in the project root, and the route pages can be viewed without additional login setup. Adapt the origin, readiness condition, and fixtures to your app.

Create tests/visual-routes.spec.js:
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
const routes = require('../visual-routes.json');
const baseURL = process.env.BASE_URL || 'http://127.0.0.1:3000';
for (const route of routes) {
test(`visual: ${route.name}`, async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto(new URL(route.path, baseURL).toString(), {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
});
// Replace or supplement this with an app-specific readiness condition.
await page.locator('body').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`${route.name}.png`, {
fullPage: true,
});
});
}
Run the suite with npx playwright test tests/visual-routes.spec.js. On its first run, Playwright Test creates reference screenshots. Review those images, then commit approved baselines with the test code. Later runs compare fresh screenshots with those references.
Rank #2
When a deliberate design change should become the new reference, review the differences and update snapshots intentionally with npx playwright test tests/visual-routes.spec.js --update-snapshots. Do not make baseline updates an automatic response to every failed comparison: doing so can approve unintended regressions.
Add viewport and state coverage deliberately
For each viewport or state that represents a real visual contract, add an explicit test case. For example, run the same route manifest once at a desktop viewport and once at a mobile viewport, with distinct snapshot names. For authenticated pages, establish a test account or storage state before navigation; for data-dependent pages, seed deterministic data. A route that redirects to a login screen or renders an empty fallback is not meaningfully covered just because a screenshot was saved.
Wait for the right application state
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the result. That stabilization helps with transient rendering, but it cannot infer that your app has loaded the intended data or reached the intended state. Wait on an application-specific signal when needed, such as a visible page heading or a completed loading indicator. Avoid relying on a fixed delay when a precise readiness condition is available.
Keep screenshots stable without hiding real defects
Playwright cautions that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep the environment that creates the reference aligned with the environment that runs comparisons: use the same browser version, operating system or container image, viewport, fonts, and relevant rendering settings. Otherwise a pixel difference may reflect the environment rather than an application change.
Animations, timestamps, rotating content, ads, and other dynamic regions can cause noisy comparisons. Playwright’s screenshot assertion supports animation-related options, and its page screenshot APIs support styling controls such as a stylesheet for hiding or normalizing elements. Use masking or omission only for content that is outside the visual contract. Hiding a changing price, status indicator, or other meaningful region may conceal a real regression.
Local snapshots or hosted visual review?
Native Playwright keeps references with the test suite and compares them during test runs. That fits teams that want repository-managed baselines and a local comparison workflow. Hosted review is an optional alternative: Percy has a Playwright integration, and its workflow can involve reviewing and approving changes in a Percy project. If unapproved changes must fail CI, configure the required wait or gate step; do not assume that snapshot capture alone blocks the pipeline. Check current vendor documentation for the integration’s token type, project setup, package and test-version requirements, and baseline behavior before adopting it.
Choose based on the workflow you need: where baselines live, which browsers and viewports you run, how changes are reviewed and approved, whether CI blocks on unapproved changes, and how much route and state-fixture maintenance your team can support. Neither a hosted service nor a screenshot API replaces the route manifest or the setup needed to reach the correct application state.
Or skip the browser setup
For a quick capture of a known URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; the API does not discover your site’s routes or replace a Playwright baseline-and-assertion workflow. For recurring visual regression tests, keep your explicit manifest and comparison logic even if you use a capture service.

Example cURL request for a WebP capture of one route:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/pricing -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. A route is missing from the run
Check that it is present in the manifest, has not been removed during normalization or deduplication, and is included in the test file’s iteration. If routes are generated from a sitemap or crawl, verify that the route is actually discoverable there; private and client-only routes may need explicit manifest entries.

Confirm the route’s authentication fixture and test data setup, then wait for an app-specific readiness signal before taking the image. A successful navigation does not establish that the expected content was reached.
Images differ across machines or CI
Align operating system or container, browser version, viewport, fonts, and headless settings with the baseline environment. Inspect the diff before changing the reference so you can distinguish environment drift from an actual visual change.
Tests fail on animation or changing content
Disable or stabilize animation and nondeterministic data where appropriate. If a region is genuinely irrelevant to the visual contract, normalize or mask it; retain it in the comparison when its appearance matters.
A new design causes widespread failures
Review the changed pages and their diffs first. If the change is intended, regenerate the affected references deliberately with Playwright’s --update-snapshots option and commit the reviewed images. If it is not intended, fix the implementation rather than accepting the new screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright automatically find every route in my website?
No. You supply the route inventory, typically from the app’s route configuration, with sitemap or link-crawl discovery used only as a supplement.
Does one screenshot per URL prove visual coverage of the whole page?
It proves only the particular viewport and application state captured by that test; add cases for other relevant viewports and states.
Can I use a screenshot API as the visual regression test itself?
A capture API can return an image, but route discovery, deterministic setup, reference management, and comparison still need to be handled by your test workflow.
