How to Loop a Single MP4 on YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Loop one MP4 indefinitely on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, connect through Live Control Room, choose compatible output settings, and check the stream preview.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one MP4 continuously on YouTube Live, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input, pace the file with -re, and send an FLV stream to the RTMP or RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a starting template; confirm the video, audio, encoder, bitrate, and key settings for your file and stream.

FFmpeg command to loop one MP4

Replace input.mp4 with your file path. Replace the destination with the exact server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose either the RTMP or RTMPS URL YouTube provides; rtmp[s]://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY is explanatory notation, not a literal address to paste.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f flv 'rtmp[s]://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. FFmpeg uses this option in its RTMP streaming example.
  • -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it before -i input.mp4.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 video encoding, and -c:a aac selects AAC audio encoding. They are broadly compatible choices, but your FFmpeg build must include them and the input must have the streams you intend to encode.
  • -f flv specifies the output format used for this RTMP-style workflow.

This template has not been tested against your particular FFmpeg build, MP4, YouTube account, or stream key. An input with no audio, different stream layout, or incompatible properties may need adjusted stream mapping or encoding options.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
  2. Check that the MP4 path is correct and that your FFmpeg installation supports the selected encoders. If the command reports an encoder or stream error, inspect the input’s video and audio streams and adjust the command accordingly.
  3. Paste the actual URL and key into the output destination, preserving the URL exactly. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg.
  4. Run the command and watch the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube instructs you to click Go live after the preview appears.
  5. Before relying on the stream, test with representative movement and audio. When finished, stop the encoder and use End Stream in Live Control Room as appropriate.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

The short template leaves several settings at defaults. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its current codec and resolution-specific bitrate recommendations.

Set the output to match your intended resolution and frame rate, then select a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for that combination and codec. For example, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and H.264 at 720p30 with a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality; your upload connection must also sustain the chosen rate. Do not assume one bitrate is right for every file or connection.

If your source differs from the target output, you may need to add scaling, frame-rate, keyframe, bitrate, or stream-mapping options. Use FFmpeg options appropriate to the installed build and inspect the preview rather than assuming that a file’s original settings automatically meet YouTube’s live-encoder requirements.

Understand the loop boundary and archive behavior

Infinite looping does not guarantee a seamless transition at the end of each pass. The video or audio may pause, jump, or otherwise show a boundary depending on the file, timestamps, and encoding behavior. Check the preview across at least one loop and adjust or prepare the source if the transition matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that same automatic archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer; check YouTube’s current guidance at YouTube’s stream archive help page.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The MP4 plays once and stops. -stream_loop -1 is missing, misspelled, or placed after the input it should apply to. Put -stream_loop -1 before -i input.mp4.
The file races through, or timing is wrong. File input is not paced for live output. Include -re before the input, as in the template.
FFmpeg reports an encoder is unavailable. The local build may not include libx264 or AAC encoding support. Check the encoders available in your build and use compatible alternatives supported by your installation and YouTube’s current guidance.
FFmpeg reports a missing audio or video stream. The MP4 may not contain the stream assumed by the command. Inspect the file’s streams and adjust the command or mapping; do not request encoding of a stream that is absent.
YouTube does not receive the feed. The URL, key, or protocol may be wrong or stale. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room and ensure you selected the matching RTMP or RTMPS destination. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
The preview is unstable or YouTube reports stream issues. Output settings may not match the target, or upload bandwidth may not sustain the bitrate. Check resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, the two-second recommended keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), and YouTube’s current bitrate table. Test with representative footage.
There is a hitch or jump when the video repeats. The source file or its timestamps and audio/video boundaries may not produce a seamless cut. Watch the loop boundary in the preview and revise the source or encoding approach if needed.
