To loop a school open-day replay on YouTube Live, send the video from an encoder whose media source or playlist is set to repeat. YouTube Live Control Room handles the stream and its audience settings; it does not provide a universal “loop replay” switch. Create or schedule the YouTube stream, add its stream URL and key to the encoder, enable looping there, and test the transition before the event.
Before you set up the replay
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general guidance says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and information about live streams.
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. Software running on an existing computer may be enough for a prerecorded replay; dedicated hardware is an option for more involved productions, not a requirement for this task. Choose based on who can operate it, whether it can repeat your file or playlist, and how well it suits the planned session. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes supported setup options.
- Check the file and rights. Confirm the video plays correctly, has the intended audio, and is cleared for the planned use. A school event can include music, student images, or other material subject to copyright, consent, safeguarding, and district policies. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and institution; YouTube’s technical setup guidance does not settle them. Review the relevant school policies and permissions before making the stream public or sharing its link.
- Plan the session length and backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a YouTube archive, plan to stay under 12 hours and keep a local recording as backup. During testing, verify that the local recording file is actually growing. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limitation.
Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, and visibility: public, private, or unlisted. Pick the setting that matches your intended audience and school policy. Unlisted means viewers need the link; it should not be treated as a secure access-control system. YouTube recommends checking access on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.
- In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. For the relevant settings, see Manage live stream settings.
- In the encoder, add the open-day replay file as a media source or add the files to a playlist. Turn on that encoder’s repeat or loop option. The exact control depends on the encoder; YouTube does not document one loop toggle that works across all encoders. Consult the selected encoder’s current instructions, then run a complete test through the end of the file and into its next playback.
Set stream quality and check bandwidth
Use the encoder settings appropriate to your source video and upload connection. YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings, including resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and keyframe guidance, in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Match the output to the file and avoid choosing a higher resolution or bitrate without a reason: it increases the upload demand without improving a lower-quality source.

Check the actual available upload bandwidth at the school, especially if the connection is shared. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity beyond the bitrate requirement for the stream. A connection that meets the target only when idle may struggle once other school devices are online. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest the full loop before event day
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use a test stream or the planned event setup to check the complete path, not just whether the encoder says it is connected. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and access checks.

- Watch the Live Control Room preview and check for stable picture and sound.
- Let the replay reach its end. Confirm it starts again without an unwanted pause, black frame, missing opening, or abrupt audio change.
- Open the watch page from a viewer’s perspective, then check access on a phone or tablet. Confirm the selected visibility works for the intended audience.
- Check that the local recording is running and its file size increases.
- Check stream health while representative school network activity is taking place, not only when the connection is otherwise unused.
Start and monitor the live replay
- On event day, start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check audio, video, and stream health before starting the event as appropriate for the scheduled setup.
- During the stream, monitor the picture and audio, confirm the encoder continues looping, and check that the local recording remains active. YouTube recommends continuous quality monitoring and checking the archive file.
- When the replay is finished, end the stream in the encoder and YouTube workflow as appropriate. Check Studio for the YouTube archive, and keep the local backup until you have confirmed that the archive is available and plays correctly. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; longer streams may not be captured.
Choose whether viewers can pause or rewind
YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream when supported. With DVR disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast, though they can watch the completed recording afterward. DVR can be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Choose the setting in Live Control Room and test what a viewer can do on the watch page. See Turn on DVR on live streams and Manage live stream settings.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending a feed, or the connection details do not match. | Check that the encoder is running and that its stream URL and key match the current YouTube stream. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or competing with other network traffic. | Check the outgoing bitrate and available school upload capacity under realistic network load. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate requirement; reduce the output bitrate if needed while keeping it appropriate for the source. |
| The replay stops at the end | Looping is controlled by the encoder’s playback source or playlist, and repeat may not be enabled or supported as configured. | Check that encoder’s repeat setting and test a full cycle. There is no universal YouTube loop switch. |
| A gap, black frame, or audio jump at the repeat point | The transition between the end and beginning of the file or playlist is not seamless. | Run a complete-cycle test with the actual media. Check the file’s ending and opening, audio continuity, and encoder behavior before the event. |
| Intended viewers cannot open the stream | Visibility or link sharing may not match the audience, or viewers may be using the wrong watch page. | Verify public, private, or unlisted settings and test access from a viewer account and mobile device. Follow school policy; unlisted links are not secure access controls. |
| No YouTube archive after the stream | The session may have exceeded 12 hours, or the archive may not yet be confirmed in Studio. | Check the session length and Studio archive. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; retain the local recording as a backup. |
