You can loop a prerecorded 720p video on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add it as a Media Source, enable Loop, and send the encoder’s output to a YouTube broadcast. The loop repeats the file, but it does not reduce the upload bandwidth needed to transmit the live stream. Set the encoder bitrate to what your upload connection can reliably sustain, allow headroom, and test the stream before going public.
What looping does—and what low upload speed changes
OBS plays the local video repeatedly while the encoder sends it to YouTube Live. For one file, OBS’s Media Source includes a Loop property that restarts playback when the file ends. For several files, VLC Video can play a playlist with Loop Playlist enabled; VLC must be installed.

Neither loop option makes the broadcast bandwidth-free. Your computer, encoder, file, power, and internet connection must keep working, and the encoder must continuously upload the live signal. There is no single upload-speed figure that guarantees a stable 720p stream: the required capacity depends on video bitrate, audio, other network use, and connection fluctuations.
Choose 720p settings that your upload can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these video bitrates for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Audio bitrate is additional, so do not treat the video figure as the total stream rate.

| Codec | 720p frame rate in YouTube’s table | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 30 or 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 30 or 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed video settings, not a promise that a connection at exactly the minimum will be stable. YouTube’s encoder guidance also calls for CBR (constant bitrate), keyframes every two seconds (not more than four seconds apart), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced settings list 128 kbps stereo audio. Prefer RTMPS where your encoder setup offers it. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Estimate the upload capacity you need
YouTube advises leaving bandwidth room: its streaming tips say, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” For example, 3 Mbps of video plus 128 kbps stereo audio is 3.128 Mbps total. Adding 20% headroom gives about 3.75 Mbps of upload capacity for the stream, before other household or workplace traffic and connection swings. This is an arithmetic example, not a YouTube-published benchmark.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Measure upload speed, not download speed; download capacity is often higher and does not tell you what the encoder can send upstream.
- Consider whether other people or devices will use the connection during the broadcast. The speed-test result is not necessarily all available to OBS.
- If the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the bitrate and/or output resolution. A stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to an unstable 720p stream.
- Choosing 30 fps instead of 60 fps may be a sensible bandwidth-saving option, but it does not guarantee a particular visual result for every source video.
Set up a looping YouTube Live broadcast in OBS
- Enable live streaming in advance. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature ahead of time. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the broadcast’s Live Control Room details and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Enter these in OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private; reset it if it is compromised. YouTube explains the available controls in Manage live stream settings.
- Add the video file in OBS. In the Sources area, select + > Media Source, create or choose a source, and browse to the local video. Turn on Loop, then confirm the source. OBS documents this behavior in its Media Sources guide.
- Set the output deliberately. In OBS output and video settings, choose 1280 × 720 output if you want 720p, select a frame rate (30 fps is a reasonable lower-bandwidth starting point than 60 fps), and set a video bitrate your measured upload can support with headroom. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and an audio setting compatible with YouTube’s guidance; the listed advanced stereo audio setting is 128 kbps. Set the encoder codec to one YouTube accepts and use RTMPS if available. YouTube normally detects encoder settings, but its Live Control Room also supports manual settings with a custom stream key.
- Test before broadcasting publicly. Make a private or unlisted test using representative video motion and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any warnings before relying on the setup.
- Start streaming and keep watch on stream health. Monitor YouTube’s status messages during the broadcast. If the connection cannot hold the target, reduce bitrate and/or resolution rather than assuming the loop itself will protect the stream.
Use a playlist instead of one file
If you need multiple videos to play in sequence, VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled is an alternative playback source; VLC must be installed. The playlist still needs to feed a live encoder, and the encoder still needs enough stable upload capacity to send its output. For a single local file, OBS Media Source is the more direct setup.
Troubleshoot a stream that buffers, drops, or will not start
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth or the video stutters | The upload connection cannot sustain the configured total bitrate, or other traffic is consuming capacity. | Check measured upload speed and competing network use. Reduce video bitrate and/or resolution, then test again. YouTube’s live streaming error messages can help interpret warnings. |
| Video stops at the end of the file | Loop is not enabled on the OBS Media Source, or the selected source is not the intended file. | Open the source properties, verify the file selection, and enable Loop. OBS describes the restart behavior in its Media Sources guide. |
| Broadcast does not connect to YouTube | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the key may have been reset, or first-time live access may still be activating. | Confirm the current URL and key in YouTube Studio, keep the key private, and allow up to 24 hours for initial enablement when applicable. Check YouTube’s live streaming error messages. |
| Stream starts but fails later | A loop only repeats playback; it cannot prevent a computer, encoder, power, file, or network interruption. | Check the stream-health messages and the local setup. If bandwidth is the constraint, lower the bitrate or resolution. Do not assume any particular upload speed guarantees indefinite operation. |
| Audio or video does not match the intended output | Encoder settings or the selected source may not match YouTube’s accepted configuration. | Review codec, CBR, keyframe interval, audio format and bitrate, output resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s encoder guidance, then repeat the private or unlisted test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos without keeping a home computer online, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
