To repeat a sleep-sounds file indefinitely with FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before its input and -re to read the file at its natural rate for live output. That handles playback; it does not keep Windows awake, restore a failed connection, or guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. This guide shows the FFmpeg setup for a YouTube Live example, a playlist option, and the separate checks needed to keep a Windows PC streaming.
What you need before you start
- A Windows PC with an FFmpeg build that supports your chosen input and output formats.
- A sleep-sounds audio file, or a playlist of files you have permission to use.
- A destination that accepts an encoder feed. The example below uses YouTube Live; other services may require different URLs, keys, codecs, or settings.
- A stable upload connection and a power plan that does not put the PC to sleep during the stream. Exact Windows settings depend on your Windows version; check them on your device rather than assuming FFmpeg controls power management.
The commands below are patterns based on FFmpeg’s documented options, not a tested end-to-end Windows configuration. Replace example paths and destination values, then test with your installed FFmpeg build and chosen platform.

Loop one sleep-sounds file indefinitely
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means loop indefinitely. Put it before the -i for the file to be repeated. For a file sent to a live service, -re reads the input at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), instead of consuming the file as quickly as possible. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The 128k value is an illustrative audio bitrate, not a universal YouTube setting. Follow the destination’s current encoder requirements and confirm whether your stream setup needs a video track as well as audio. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

What the options do
-re: pace file reading at its native rate for live-style output. It does not improve an unstable upload connection.-stream_loop -1: repeat the input without a preset end.-i: select the input file.-c:a aac -b:a 128k: encode audio as AAC at the example bitrate; adjust to the destination’s requirements.-f flv: select an FLV output container commonly used for RTMP-style ingest. Verify the protocol and format supported by the destination.
FFmpeg cautions against applying low read rates to actual capture devices or live inputs because doing so can cause packet loss. The pacing option here is intended for a file input, not a live microphone or capture device.
Loop a playlist of sleep sounds
For variety, the concat demuxer can read a text file listing several media files in sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation says the files need the same streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts. A duration directive can override a file’s stored duration. Consult the concat demuxer documentation.
1. Make a playlist file
Create a text file such as C:sleep-streamplaylist.txt with one entry per line. Forward slashes in paths are often convenient in this format:

2. Run the playlist through FFmpeg

Similar file extensions do not guarantee that every track has compatible streams or will join without an audible discontinuity.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Copy those values into the encoder’s destination configuration, and treat the key as a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. The exact control-room labels and availability may change; follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) video encoding, and up to 60 frames per second. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo AAC or MP3 audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended advanced settings. These are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that one set of settings suits every connection, resolution, codec, or stream type. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing video parameters. The audio-only example above does not set video resolution, frame rate, or keyframes.

YouTube recommends RTMPS and a speed test, and advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain; a speed test is only a snapshot, not assurance of uninterrupted service.
Plan archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce one complete archive. If an archive matters, check YouTube’s current guidance and plan how you will preserve the content.

Make the Windows setup suitable for long runs
Looping an input is only one part of a continuous broadcast. FFmpeg does not prevent Windows from sleeping, restart itself after a failure, or repair an internet connection. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin for background tasks so the process does not check for console input; it also documents redirecting standard input from NUL on Windows as an alternative. These address console input only, not uptime or recovery. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Before leaving the stream unattended
- Check Windows power and sleep settings for the version and power mode on your PC.
- Decide how FFmpeg will be launched after a reboot and how you will notice or recover from a stopped process. The command alone does not provide process supervision or automatic restart.
- Check that the PC remains powered and connected, and that your internet plan and upload capacity are suitable for a continuous stream.
- Run a supervised test and monitor FFmpeg’s output and the platform’s stream-health messages before relying on the setup.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts, screenshots, and shared logs. If it is compromised, reset it at the destination.
The exact Windows sleep-prevention and restart steps depend on the Windows release and configuration. Verify them on your PC; do not treat a successful FFmpeg command as proof that the machine will stay awake or recover from outages.

Copyright and channel considerations
Use sleep sounds, music, images, and other visuals only when you have the necessary rights for live streaming and any archive.
