To make a photo feel more like you, change the way it is taken before reaching for a filter: step farther from the camera, use even natural light, and take several relaxed frames while making small adjustments. Photos can also feel unfamiliar because they show a fixed, unreversed view, while you usually see yourself live and reversed in a mirror. Neither view is the single definitive version of how you look.
Why you can look different in a photo
A mirror and a photo show different views
A mirror gives you a live, reversed, three-dimensional view. A photograph is a fixed, unreversed, two-dimensional image. You may be more accustomed to the mirror version, so the orientation and stillness of a photo can feel strange. That reaction does not mean the photo is more objectively true, or that your familiar mirror image is wrong. Kim Penberthy, interviewed by University of Virginia News in 2025, describes this difference in how we see ourselves.

Flipping a photo horizontally can be a familiarity check if you prefer the mirror orientation. It only reverses left and right: it will not change perspective, lighting, or facial proportions, and it is not appropriate for a document photo if the issuing authority requires an unaltered image.

When a camera is very close to your face, nearer features can appear disproportionately prominent. This is a perspective effect: the relationship between the camera and subject matters. Instead of holding a phone close and switching to a wide-angle view, try stepping back and reframing with the main camera or a longer-focal-length option, if your phone has one. There is no single focal length that always matches human vision; distance, framing, sensor, and viewing conditions all affect the result.

The general relationship between camera position and perceived facial proportions is discussed in “Camera Focal Length and the Perception of Pictures” (2014). Google’s Pixel photo guidance also recommends using a telephoto option from farther away where the device offers it and you have room.
Light, pose, and expression matter
Light direction and quality affect how shape appears; harsh or uneven light can create stronger shadows than soft, even light. Camera height, head and shoulder angle, and expression also change the frame. There is no universally flattering side, pose, or lighting setup. The Society of Photographers’ portrait guidance emphasizes that lighting choices should suit the individual. A Canon Canada portrait guide likewise recommends observing natural mannerisms and keeping a subject moving between frames rather than locking into one rigid pose.

A simple way to take a more natural-looking portrait
Use this as a starting point, not a guarantee: compare a few frames and keep the setup that feels most like you.
- Move the camera back. Ask someone to take the photo from farther away, or place your phone securely at a distance. Use the main camera or a telephoto option if available and suitable. Avoid relying on a close-up wide-angle view.
- Stabilize the phone. For a solo shot, prop it on a stable surface or stand and use the timer. A stand or tripod is optional; it makes hands-free framing easier but does not by itself correct close-camera perspective.
- Choose gentle, clear light. Face a window or stand in open shade. Try to avoid strong, uneven light that leaves distracting shadows across your face.
- Set a comfortable camera height. Place the lens around a natural viewing height rather than forcing an extreme high or low angle. Make small adjustments to your head or shoulders between frames.
- Take several relaxed shots. Use the timer or ask the photographer to keep shooting while you talk, reset, or shift slightly. A natural expression may appear between posed moments.
- Review at normal size and adjust. Check the actual frames, then change one thing at a time—distance, light, angle, or expression. Comparing small changes is more useful than assuming a particular “best side” or setting will work for everyone.
Google’s Pixel advice is device-specific: it suggests a prop, self-timer, and test shots, and describes a telephoto option for photographing from farther away when available. The same basic workflow can be adapted to other phones, but their lens options and controls differ.

If the photo is for an official ID
Follow the rules for the exact document and issuing authority rather than applying ordinary portrait advice automatically. For U.S. passports, the Department of State requires a forward-facing, full-face photo with a clear image and natural appearance, and does not allow appearance-altering edits. Those are U.S. passport requirements, not general rules for social, family, or professional portraits.
