Use FFmpeg’s own report and standard-error logs to capture encoder diagnostics, and use a service manager or supervisor to record every process start, exit, and restart with a UTC timestamp. Those records help distinguish a reconnect within one FFmpeg process from a process restart. They do not, by themselves, make an outgoing RTMP connection reconnect reliably.
What the logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg’s -report option writes a report containing the command line and log output. Redirecting standard error to a managed log gives you another diagnostic record. A supervisor’s timestamped start and stop entries fill a different gap: they show whether FFmpeg exited and was launched again.

This distinction matters because FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed options are in its HTTP protocol section. They do not establish a generic automatic-reconnect switch for an outgoing RTMP publishing connection. Do not treat those HTTP options as proof that a YouTube RTMP output will recover.
Capture FFmpeg diagnostics and process restarts

2. Record launches and exits outside FFmpeg
Run the command under a service manager or other supervisor. Configure it to retain each launch time, exit time, exit code or signal, restart count, and relevant service-manager message. Use UTC timestamps so records from FFmpeg, the host, and YouTube Live Control Room can be compared. FFmpeg’s report alone is not a reliable record of what happened between process invocations.

3. Protect and rotate the logs
- Set log rotation and retention so repeated failures or verbose diagnostics cannot fill the disk.
- Treat FFmpeg reports as sensitive:
-reportrecords the command line, which can contain source URLs, tokens, or stream credentials. - Keep the stream key out of shared logs and limit access to report and service logs.
- Use an operationally useful log level for normal running; raise verbosity temporarily during controlled troubleshooting rather than leaving noisy debug output on indefinitely.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings before diagnosing a drop
Copy the current ingest URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your encoder. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the current one; an old or incorrect key can prevent publishing.

YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes encoder settings for standard video ingest, including constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for YouTube’s current guidance. Match the settings to the stream you are configuring rather than assuming a logging change will correct an ingest or encoding mismatch.

Leave network capacity in reserve
The total stream bitrate must fit within available outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, and notes that other users or devices sharing the network can reduce what is available. Check its streaming tips, then monitor stream health and messages during the event.
Test what happens when the connection fails
- Use a controlled, unlisted stream rather than experimenting on an important public broadcast.
- Record the FFmpeg build/version and the exact service configuration used for the test.
- Interrupt the encoder’s network path in a controlled way and note the UTC time.
- Compare FFmpeg’s output, supervisor events, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.
- Check whether the supervisor starts another process, whether the new process publishes successfully, and whether the event remains available as expected.
- Repeat the test after changing one setting at a time, and verify that old and new encoder processes cannot publish simultaneously.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring a stream; for backup-encoder planning, it also advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and verifying rollover. The official guidance does not specify whether repeated RTMP publisher disconnects preserve a viewer session or event identity, so verify the behavior for your setup rather than assuming continuity. An archived stream is not a reconnect guarantee: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot missing or ambiguous reconnect evidence
