Log what happened to an upload, not what it contained. Record a small, structured lifecycle event with an opaque server-generated ID, timestamp, outcome and bounded reason code; keep audio bytes, raw multipart bodies and sensitive fields out of application logs and every downstream telemetry sink.
What a safe upload log should record
File-upload submissions and processing are useful security events to log, but the payload is not ordinary diagnostic data. OWASP advises removing, masking, sanitizing, hashing or encrypting sensitive personal data rather than recording it directly. Its Logging Cheat Sheet also emphasizes that logging should be limited to data permitted by applicable legal and organizational requirements.

upload_received,upload_validation_failed,upload_scan_failedorupload_stored. - Timestamp and component: when the event occurred and which service or component handled it.
- Opaque upload or request ID: generated by the server, not copied from an untrusted client field.
- Outcome and bounded reason code: such as accepted or rejected, with a controlled category such as
unsupported_type,size_limitormalware_scan_failed. - Optional minimized metadata: measured byte count only when needed for capacity or abuse monitoring; a pseudonymous actor reference only when incident correlation requires it and policy permits it.
This is a practical event design based on OWASP’s logging guidance, not a prescribed OWASP schema. Do not include file bytes, the raw multipart body, audio transcription, original filename by default, authentication or session tokens, or unbounded client-supplied values. If troubleshooting genuinely requires a value, minimize and sanitize it when creating the event rather than relying on later redaction.

Why request-body logging is the wrong default
Multipart requests can contain audio alongside names, contact details, tokens or other personal fields. Copying the body into logs creates another store of that sensitive material, often with different access controls and retention. It also expands exposure: the body may pass through application logging, proxies, error reporting, APM and remote log collectors.
OWASP’s Logging Vocabulary Cheat Sheet warns: “Logging the payload is dangerous and may result in log injection.” A hostile field value could forge or confuse records, as well as expose its contents. Prefer a field name, rule identifier or bounded rejection category over the submitted value.

Body capture can have debugging value, but it has substantially greater exposure, log-volume and retention costs, and sends data to more systems. Keep lifecycle events as the normal production approach. If body capture is temporarily necessary for a controlled non-production investigation, limit access and duration, avoid real sensitive data, and verify every capture point and sink before using it.

Check every place that can capture the request
Disabling payload output in the application logger alone does not prove the upload is safe. Framework debug modes, exception handlers, reverse proxies, web servers, API gateways, APM agents, error trackers and log forwarders may independently record request or response bodies, headers or error context. There is no single universal setting that disables capture across products and versions; inspect the configuration actually deployed.

- Define allowed events and fields. Prevent generic request-object serialization or middleware from attaching bodies to routine log records.
- Inspect each component. Review application middleware and framework diagnostics, server and proxy configuration, gateways, exception reporting, APM and error tracking, and forwarding or collection pipelines for body or header capture.
- Test representative cases outside production. Send successful, rejected, malformed and oversized uploads using synthetic data. Inspect every resulting log and telemetry sink for audio bytes, multipart boundaries, filenames, tokens and personal fields. A setting’s name is not proof of its behavior.
- Keep useful security outcomes. Log validation failures and scan results as bounded categories or rule identifiers instead of raw payloads.
- Sanitize retained untrusted text. Encode or otherwise safely handle it so it cannot forge log entries or exploit the log viewer.
- Protect the records. Restrict read and modification access, monitor logging health and access, use secure transport to remote collectors, and apply the approved retention schedule.
Logging is only one layer of upload security
Safe logs do not make an unsafe upload pipeline safe. OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet recommends defense in depth: allow only necessary extensions, validate the actual file type rather than trusting the request’s Content-Type, generate filenames on the server, set size limits, require authorization, isolate storage outside the web root or on another host, and scan or use content disarm where appropriate. These measures protect the upload itself; they are not a reason to put its content in logs.
