Samsung’s documented built-in option is to protect a Messages app instance inside Secure Folder, rather than put a separate password on one conversation. To hide message text on a locked display, use the lock-screen notification setting instead. These options protect different things, so choose the one that fits what you want to keep private.
Choose the right kind of message privacy
| Option | What it protects | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Messages in Secure Folder | The app instance and data stored in that protected space, behind its lock method. | Samsung does not guarantee that every incoming SMS or RCS message will be routed to that instance. |
| Hide lock-screen notification content | Message preview text shown in notifications while the phone is locked. | Does not password-lock a conversation inside Messages. |
| Individual conversation lock | No per-thread lock control is described in Samsung’s support documentation. | Secure Folder is an app-level alternative, not a documented lock for a single thread. |
For Secure Folder steps and limitations, see Samsung’s Secure Folder support guide and its UK Secure Folder guidance. For notification privacy, consult Samsung’s notification settings instructions.

Protect a Messages app instance with Secure Folder
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy. On older software, look for Biometrics and security.
- Tap More security settings if shown, then choose Secure Folder.
- Sign in to or create a Samsung Account if prompted, and complete the setup screens.
- Choose a lock method: PIN, password, pattern, or a supported biometric.
- Open Secure Folder, tap +, select Messages, and add it.
- When finished, lock or exit Secure Folder. Samsung provides automatic-lock options and a manual Lock and exit control.
Menu labels vary by Galaxy model and Android or One UI version, and unsupported devices may not offer Secure Folder. Samsung says the feature will not appear in the Security and privacy menu if a device does not support it; see Samsung US support.

Adding Messages to Secure Folder creates a protected app instance in that container. It does not, by itself, establish that all new SMS or RCS messages will be delivered there instead of to the ordinary Messages app. Routing can depend on the model, default messaging-app state, and carrier software. After setup, send a test message from another phone and confirm which instance receives it before relying on Secure Folder as your only place to check messages. Samsung’s app- and data-container guidance is available at Samsung UK support; Samsung does not promise universal redirection there.

Hide message previews on the lock screen
If the concern is someone reading a notification while your phone is locked, open Settings > Notifications and use the lock-screen notification controls to enable Hide content on lock screen (the wording may vary). This hides preview text until the phone is unlocked; it does not lock the conversation within the app. See Samsung’s notification settings instructions.
Hide Secure Folder from the Apps screen
Secure Folder can be hidden from the Apps or Home screen. Depending on the One UI version, look for Add Secure Folder to Apps screen and switch it off, choose Hide Secure Folder, or use the Secure Folder Quick Settings tile. Samsung’s instructions vary by software version; see its Secure Folder guide and UK guidance. Hiding the folder can affect visibility and notifications: hidden apps may stop showing alerts until Secure Folder is shown or decrypted. If alerts matter, test the behavior on your phone before keeping it hidden.

Recover access if you forget the Secure Folder lock
During setup, enable Reset with Samsung account if the option is available. If you later forget the Secure Folder credential, Samsung allows you to reset it after Samsung Account verification when that recovery option was enabled. Without it, recovery may require removing Secure Folder and setting it up again. Preserve or move any files you need before removing it, because uninstalling can delete content that has not been preserved. See Samsung’s Secure Folder support guide for recovery details.
If the protected Messages app does not notify you
- Check whether Secure Folder is locked or hidden; its state can affect whether alerts appear.
- In Secure Folder settings, check the option for allowing background activity while locked, if your software version provides it.
- Confirm that Messages has notification permission.
- Send a test message and check both the ordinary and protected Messages instances to identify where it arrived.
These checks follow Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for Secure Folder notifications: Samsung Secure Folder support. An absent alert does not by itself prove that the message was lost.
