Meta wants people to build their own Muse gadgets, too

Meta’s Muse Gadgets project lets you build a connected device yourself instead of buying a dedicated Meta accessory. The documented routes are an off-the-shelf ESP32 board running Meta’s ESP32 Device SDK, or a Raspberry Pi/Linux computer running the Linux Device SDK. You can connect displays, buttons, microphones, speakers, sensors, actuators and custom commands, depending on the project.

Meta describes these as “open source devices you build yourself” and frames the effort as “built by hackers, for hackers, just for fun.” The official starting point is Meta’s Muse Gadgets documentation.

What a Muse gadget is—and is not

A Muse gadget is maker hardware that you assemble or program to connect with Muse. It is not a required Meta accessory, and Meta does not promise that every development board or peripheral will work. The project page provides examples and SDKs rather than a complete compatibility matrix.

That also makes Muse Gadgets different from Meta’s announced consumer products. Meta said Muse was expected to come to its AI glasses in the coming months, while Muse Charm was described as a pocket-sized device for talking and interacting with Muse. Those products are not DIY gadget kits. See Meta’s September 24, 2026 announcement for those product descriptions: The Biggest News From Connect 2026.

Choose one of the two documented build paths

Route Hardware Best suited to SDK
Microcontroller Off-the-shelf ESP32 board Screens, audio input/output, sensors, buttons and compact interactive devices ESP32 Device SDK
Linux computer Raspberry Pi or another Linux box Linux applications, custom commands, system administration tasks and Home Assistant-related projects Linux Device SDK

Neither route is presented by Meta as universally faster, cheaper, lower-power or more reliable. Pick based on the software you need to run and the peripherals your project requires.

ESP32: the compact electronics route

The ESP32 Device SDK connects an ESP32 board to Muse. Meta’s examples include adding a screen, audio input or output, and sensors. This is the natural route for a small standalone gadget with a physical button, status display or simple sensor-driven behavior.

You will need an ESP32 development board, the peripherals for your design, power appropriate to that board, and the SDK token required by Meta’s setup. Confirm the exact board and peripheral combination in the project documentation before buying parts; an example shown on the site is not a guarantee for every revision or accessory.

Raspberry Pi or Linux: the application and automation route

The Linux Device SDK turns a spare Raspberry Pi or other Linux computer into a Muse gadget. This route is intended for software that benefits from Linux, such as custom commands, administrative chores or a Home Assistant setup. A Raspberry Pi 5 is one of Meta’s named examples, but the page does not establish that it is required for every Linux project.

BOBOVR M3 Pro Battery Pack Head Strap Accessories, Compatible with Meta Quest 3/Quest 3S,Reduce Facial Stress,Magnetic Battery Swap Design
  • Compatible with Meta Quest 3/Quest 3S: Reduce facial pressure, It adopts a suspended design and supports multi-point adjustment, which evenly transfers the original facial pressure of the host to the head. If you want, you can even remove the facial interface to fully enjoy the transparency of MR mode.
  • Power supply is more convenient: The battery pack adopts a magnetic quick-release design, and the battery can be detached and charged, which does not affect the use of VR host. Two battery packs are hot-swappable for unlimited battery life (the second battery pack needs to be purchased separately).
  • Reducing the weight of the head battery: We designed a dedicated battery pack B2 for the VR host, which weighs only 140g, which can balance the front and rear weights. Compared with the traditional power bank, the burden on the head is significantly reduced.
  • Double the battery life: The battery capacity of a single battery pack is 5200mah, adding about 2 hours (APP depends) of VR time.

How to start a build

  1. Choose the platform. Select ESP32 for a dedicated embedded device, or Linux/Raspberry Pi when you need Linux applications, scripts or integrations.
  2. Prepare the hardware. Gather the board, display, button, sensor, microphone, speaker or actuator your idea needs. Use the manufacturer’s wiring and power guidance for each part.
  3. Get a Muse SDK token. Meta’s Muse Gadgets guide identifies the token as part of the setup process.
  4. Install the matching SDK. Use the ESP32 Device SDK for an ESP32 board or the Linux Device SDK for a Raspberry Pi/Linux machine.
  5. Start from a project idea. The official page lists example builds; adapt one only after checking its repository instructions and confirmed hardware.
  6. Test power and recovery before expanding. Bring up the board with the simplest configuration, then add peripherals one at a time so wiring or power problems are easier to isolate.

What you can build with Meta’s examples

These are examples listed by Meta, not endorsements or purchasing requirements:

  • Raspberry Pi 5: a platform for Home Assistant and Linux applications.
  • Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.75C: a round AMOLED touchscreen concept with push-to-talk, speaker, microphone and battery.
  • Seeed reTerminal E1002: a color e-ink device.
  • M5Stack StickS3: a pocket-size color-screen device with a button.
  • AiPi Lite: a button-operated desktop companion with voice and a color display.
  • ideaspark ESP32 board: an ESP32 example with a 1.9-inch display.
  • Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition: push-to-talk, speaker/microphone and a status LED ring.
  • TV HDMI-stick idea: marked “Coming soon” on the project page.

Meta says the listed hardware is made and sold by other companies and is not endorsed or warranted by Meta. Availability, board revisions and project support can change, so treat the list as a set of documented starting points rather than a certification list.

Connecting Muse to devices around your home

Meta’s Muse Home Link is described as a way to connect Muse to home Wi-Fi so it can reach compatible devices you already own or devices exposing a local HTTP API. The page says Home Link is free with an active Muse subscription in the United States, limited to one per subscriber, and describes October shipping. Because that availability and shipping information is time-sensitive, check the current status on the official Muse Gadgets page before planning around it.

Risks, warranties and open-source terms

Hardware tinkering can go wrong. Meta warns that a board could be bricked, a manufacturer warranty could be voided, or brownouts could occur. Disconnect power before changing wiring, use suitable power supplies, and keep a recovery path for firmware and configuration.

The device SDKs and firmware are open source under the Apache 2.0 license and provided as-is, without warranty, according to Meta. Open source does not mean that a particular third-party board is supported, safe to modify, or covered by Meta.

Keep Muse Gadgets separate from AI-glasses development

Meta’s AI-glasses developer program is a different ecosystem. Its documentation describes mobile apps, standalone web apps and Meta AI connectors that can use capabilities such as camera, audio, display and inputs: Build for AI glasses from Meta. Those APIs and app paths should not be confused with the ESP32 and Linux Device SDKs used for Muse Gadgets.

Which board should you choose?

  • Choose ESP32 when the core experience is a compact screen, button, sensor, speaker, microphone or simple actuator.
  • Choose Raspberry Pi/Linux when you need Linux packages, scripts, custom commands, Home Assistant or other software that is awkward to run on a microcontroller.
  • Delay buying a named example if your required peripheral, board revision or enclosure is not confirmed in the project documentation.

The Bottom Line

Muse Gadgets is Meta’s invitation to experiment with your own hardware: ESP32 for embedded interfaces and Raspberry Pi/Linux for applications and automation. Start with the matching SDK and a documented example, then verify compatibility and power requirements yourself—Meta’s examples are not universal guarantees, and the software is supplied without warranty.
